Looking for eco crypto projects...

in steem •  6 years ago  (edited)

We, and the planet, are in a bit of a bad way - and time is running out.

Reading news of this latest report on the BBC the other day has rather re-jolted me back into action...

Nature crisis: Humans 'threaten 1m species with extinction'

  • A million species face extinction in decades
  • Between 1980 and 2000, 100 million hectares of tropical forest were lost
  • Plastic pollution has increased ten-fold since 1980
  • etc etc etc
Environmental campaigning was my thing. I need to get to back on the front line. ASAP.

But now I've got one foot stuck in the crypto world. So I'm wondering...

Are there ways to help fix the planet through cryptocurrencies and blockchains?

On Steem we have @cleanplanet and @impactn.

I'm guessing there must be other eco-crypto projects out there.

I have come across Solar Coin which looks useful.

Anyone come across any other sustainability / environmental related projects in the crypto world?

Bitcoin uses so much electricity that you may consider Steem to be an eco-crypto project by comparison!

Electricity consumption for crypto mining is a mega problem!

When presenting our project we actually stress Steem is an eco-friendly blockchain.

Just read about Restart energy one this morning http://restartenergy.io/ but there are also
https://wepower.network/
https://cyclean.io/
https://solardao.me/
http://www.ecobit.io/ and
https://evergreencoin.org/ to name a few
Of course, you can recycle your upvotes in solar energy on Steemit with @solarcoach

Many thanks for all these links - there does seem to be a lot of projects about.

This could be an interesting overview for you. More than 600 blockchain-projects targeting social or environmental impact: https://positiveblockchain.io/
I know some of the guys organising this. So, just let me know, if you want to get in contact with them.

Thanks for this - most interesting list. I will start working through it.

Yes I would be interested to connect with the people involved with the project. Thank you.

I see a few projects are highlighted already. Crypto could be used to fund all sorts of green projects. I'll look at supporting those already on Steem. It is important that the crypto is sustainable and some such as bitcoin have issues there. Getting paid crypto for generating renewable power could be big. Definitely an interesting area and I plan to post more about environmental issues.

I think there is a lot of untapped potential to explore in the eco-crypto world.

Hopefully we can get more going on Steem too.

Definitely want to know more about the Solar coin! Love having my Solar system going now! And it's charging my drone for flying practice to continue...

Solar is awesome!

your research question is a paradox. a lot of old currencies are proof of work and harm the problem a lot as the more power you consume the more u earn. then newer ones do proof of stake or in steem witnessing. now mining is often done by asiic miners but vericoin/verium just reduced the difficulty and made it only slowly cpu minable. inflation of the coin can reward ur targets, like steem inflates to reward content creators. but why would someone keep a dwindeling investment in a coin when they could just donate it. then usres are not rewarded.
