Goodbye dayjob. All into steem!

in steem •  8 years ago

After the launch of steem it was immideately clear to me that I won't have any motivation left for the dull day job. Unfortunately I've been trapped in a contract I could only cancel by the end of a quarter.

Today is the big day. 3 months left in the year, and finally free!

Unfortunately I've also just lost my top 19 witness position, but for now I won't bother about this. Hopefully my work in the following months will convince one or two whales to push me back up.

As a first step I will work on completing the nodeless JS lib, for which I set up a bounty which wasn't completed. With that library I'll finally be able to launch the steemdice GUI.

PEvO is still making small progresses. The team has grown, but we still need more scientists from different fields familiar with the publishing process to design a perfect product which will be able to compete with the journal industry. Send anyone you know our way, best to join the chat. If you visit SteemFest, be sure to attend our talk about the project!

My voting power is by now mostly used by project curie and similar initiatives. I'm amazed how the community manages to spread the rewards over more posts and happy to be able to help!

Today I wanted to visit a blockchain meetup focusing on steem in Münster (Germany), but sadly missed my train. We'll do a hangout instead which will probably be published on steemit, but it will be in german.

After SteemFest me and Juka will travel through and around Europe, to promote steem and visit meetups, conventions and fellow steemians.

Let's move this forward, full steem ahead!

What a pity not to celebrate this day with you in the Münster Meetup today! Some good Münster brew Beer was waiting for you. But you only missed the train to us, but caught the train to a new life - and we will congratulate you over the hangout which will be public - in German language - but for Englisch speaking steelers - don´t mind dropping in and asking questions in English - here is the LINK directly
https://app.webinarjam.net/register/31703/9d0ccad317

and the steemit post is here:

As if I wouldn't be sorry enough already. Hope that steem will continue to be a topic at your meetups, so I can get a taste of your beer next time! :)

Heyy sounds great on your Steemit plans, and I know whats it like to be stuck in a job you hate, so you will feel the freedom soon!! :)) What cities are you guys planning to visit after the Steemfest?

Didn't plan it to the city level yet. Actually, I didn't plan anything much. Just going to see where the path takes me. So far Spain, Romania and Greece are on my list. I don't want to settle down any time soon, there's so many places to see!

I recommend Crete, Greece!

hahah thats a good plan!! Spain is amazing! I have never been to Romania actually! and Greece is stunning! Well let us know where you go!

looking forward to seeing you in Romania!

what was your job that you hated? WAIT don;t answer that! save it for the hot seat :))

Congrats! Talented people working full time on Steem is a beautiful thing to see.

Regarding the top 19, there are only a limited number of spots and while I can't say I think every single top 19 member is the best choice in my opinion for the community, the list has gotten better. What I would suggest is not to look at it as an all-or-nothing proposition and approach some of the other top 19 witnesses about the idea of allocating some of their witness funds to your project. I'm currently sponsoring three other projects in addition to my own work. To me that seems a better way to approach the funding provided by the 19 slots than projects getting funded and unfunded just because a particular witness is in or out.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Thanks!

I agree with the list, it's really gotten better. Glad to see newcomer talents being appreciated.
And of course you're also right with projects being funded by more than one source, especially when they're as big as PEvO. The total cost for it can easily accumulate into the millions over time.
We try to handle everything as open as possible, and everyone is invited to contribute. That includes monetary contributions of course.
I'm able to carry the running expenses by myself for a while now, we just can't expand much more with the current budget. If the situation doesn't resolve I may start to try actively raising funds next year, and at some point that won't be avoidable at all probably. For now I hope to get back up soon.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

There isn't millions to allocate from witness funding at all. Currently power-downs for a long-running witness run about $2000/week and if you value SP at 100% of par (questionable), accrued SP is still only about $4000/week. I'm running negative just to maintain funding to projects that I want to support, delaying cuts until it is clear the market won't recover. So if you do need that kind of funding then other sources will probably needed anyway, unless there are some big STEEM price increases soon.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

at some point that won't be avoidable at all probably

In the long run it will have to find support from the scientific community. We're not there yet though :) And to a big part it's up to us how fast we want to/can get there.

Congratulations on leaving that day job behind and being able to be fully dedicated to steemit.

Thanks for all that you have done to make steemit what it is; we appreciate your support.

THANK YOU @pharesim!

Also, thanks for showing support for the OPERATION TRANSLATION effort.

Is there a real game plan for bridging the language barrier on steemit or is there anything more we could do on our end? I not sure what the whales or others really think, but I'm doing my best to build this community for the long-term.

Thanks.

Congrats, and thanks for making the move to put more time into this! Personally I never looked back on mine, happy to have made that leap :D

I was so jealous when I saw your post about it :) I knew it won't be too long, but it seemed like an eternity

Yes.. the last day feels damn good, right?!!

i think it's my turn to get jealous LOL

I'm leaving my job to work full time on Steem are the best kind of posts. They make me dream a lot. I wish I'll be able to do the same someday. It seems like one of the most fulfilling "job" to exist. Enjoy!

Congratulations!

So . . . . I'm thinking that I've inadvertently finished your bounty for you . . . .

Check out https://steemit.com/steemit/@digital-wisdom/introducing-steem-browsifier-full-access-to-the-steem-api-from-the-browser

What else do you need? I'd be happy to add anything (that makes sense to me as being productive ;-) Or, if you wish to join the project, I'd be happy to add you . . . .

Finally someone cared to browserify that. But the bounty is about a native implementation without node. 600kB is absolute overload.

Congratulations! I wish I could get away from Fort Galt to come and see you in November but I'm pretty sure I'll be tied up with construction so we'll just have to do it another time.

I was sad to see you knocked out of the top 19. You were a huge influence to me becoming invested in and getting started in steemit, and you were the first to support me and @cheetah. I hugely appreciate it.

The top 19 has changed a lot, and I wouldn't be surprised if it continues to change in the future, so I hope you get a spot back. And as smooth said, don't forget, you get 2 years witness severance pay haha. :)

Anyways, I'm happy to see that you are not only not giving up on steem, but are going all in! :) I can't wait to see where Pevo takes us.
Keep up the awesome work @pharesim! Can't wait to meet you at SteemFest!

Looking forward to talk to you personally too!

Holy Crap! I forgot about the bounty.

I was getting severe headaches when working on that and had some bad news come to me in the medical department and it kinda of shocked me out of anything and everything to do with steembots, and shifted me onto this bucket list journey I'm on.

Listen, we've built a solid team to work on "havin", a game using steem and it will need the same signing code completed, in order to handle signatures.

So why not just give that bounty 100% to @trogdor since he did all the heavy work thus far on that lib and we'll just tidy up the last bits remaining and finish out the lib for you.

My deepest apologies to @pharesim and @trogdor both!!!
I am sincerely sorry for dropping the ball like that!

Life happens - hope you're ok!

@trogdor definitely earned his bounty, but he won't accept it until it's done. I didn't look at the current state for a while, but my last impression was that it should be nearly finished. Your help with completing it is very much appreciated!

Ok so I let everything about the steembots domain just lapse including my email so I'm going by memory here but...

Trogdor earned his bounty, he got all but the last piece flattened and this was flattening stage was 95% complete.

However there was another phase of stripping it down to the bare minimum functionality and that work was what I was trying to focus on when I dropped it. However the only code I ave left on that project is what's up on github.

As for health, I found out that I have macular degeneration, the migraines were just one symptom. I'll live, but my sight is going to hell a lot faster than it should for a man my age.

So I set out on a quest to see all I can see, while I can still see it, and I'm trying to bring businesses to steem in the process.

So far I have a hospital in TJ and a nationwide men's hair salon. You can see my blog for details.

But I also this project called Havin which is my focus for the next week or two and it's basically pokemon go for steem but in 8 bit and with businesses accepting SBD as a condition of being part of the game.

I've been busy, just not with anything programming related. Havin is likely the last piece of actual code I will ever write personally. Even this post is being dictated to "Commander Steem", a plugin I wrote to help low vision users dictate posts because the font is hell a small on here. But I don't think I can make much more progress on even that simple plugin myself.

So I'm building a team and trying to assume more of an architectural role going forward. Nevertheless, a promise is a promise and I'm just shocked I dropped it like that.
I'll find a way to get it done.

Hey I lost your email, can you shoot me an email to [email protected] please?

Congrats! I wish you good luck i am sure you'll be back in top 19 in no time :)

Thank you!

Herzlichen Glückwunsch!!!

Danke hase knuff

So lucky that you get to do steemit full time!
I wish I can get out of my other job and completely work on steemit too!
I hate my other job and I just love steemit. One day!! .... :)

no comment just Running a test

Ich wünsche dir viel Glück

Danke sehr!

Full support !

I hope you make it back into the Top 19, real quick.

I'm looking forward to reading about Juka's and your adventures !

You were one of the inspirations I found when I started asking myself if I could create a list of witnesses that have influenced my life and decision to run for witness as well.

Glad to hear you're on the up and up. We need more positivity and genuine want to help the network by spread the word about STEEM.. Such as what you bring to the ecosystem. :)

Thank you for the kind words. Glad I could serve as an inspiration! :)

Drink Freedom, bro and don't let the, trap you anymore :-)

Slurp !
:)

Hope one day many of us can follow you (quitting old jobs) to join this historical movement! All the best!

I hope freedom from your day job fits you well my friend and wish you all the best and good fortune here on steem.

Freedom in any form is cause for celebration, thought and satisfaction. Freedom to concentrate on something you have passion for... awesome, good luck going forward!

PS just the title alone was great to read.

That's awesome news! Full Steem ahead!

Romania AWAITS!

You doing great work and follow your bounty and other projects closely... ;-) You are right, I am 3 month now full time on Steem and working on multiple projects and it is great, hope to contribute and bring more value to the community. It looks like number of full time Steemians are increasing which is very exciting..

Oh no wait what how did you lose the position? Love the picture I feel so trapped at the job. Best of luck upvoted!

To me, it is wonderful news. Can focus on things that really matters to you. :-) The first time when i found pevo, i already saw it as a gem. I am sure you will get back into top 19 soon. Resteem!

Glueckwunsch zu deiner Entscheidung!

I wish you all the best, buddy. Hope you turn this opportunity into a huge success! :)

Trying my damndest to go to the Steemfest so if I do make it, look forward very much to meeting you. :)

I sincerely congratulate! It really is a great day!

Fingers crossed for you, @pharesim. Brave decision - I am actually also working towards this goal and it's just nice to see that there are others who already dared to go full-time on Steemit. This is encouraging me even more to keep going. Thumbs up for you and all the best wishes from me.
Cheers, Ines

Big step forward man! Now you have more time for the dog too =)

This was the first post I saw today and it's the best news I've heard in a long time! Congratulations!

Hello @pharesim, congratulations to you for this great and wise decision. You may have missed the train to Minster, but you sure have not missed that this train that takes you to Planet Stemm !! keep on Steeming that great work I am sure you are doing for all of this community.

Cool to see peaple do this :D
I think it has a bright future as a working place.

Great that you also support Curie project, that is one of a kind project :)
Bon weekend ^^

Wow such a cool idea traveling through europe and attend at different Steem Meetups have fun !!!!! And I'm sure you'll get your top witness position back !!!

Awesome move, takes guys to go for it but I smh sure you will make it a success!!

I'm surprised you are not on top 19 witness list, as I remember the video you made a bit ago, and thought you were brilliant! I voted for you after i saw that. Maybe now that you have more time, you will be back on? I think the PEVO initiative is great....it needs some serious energy put into it, right?

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Remember this? The situation hasn't changed since then, and pumpkin decided to remove his vote for now.
The difference this time is that PEvO's funding is secured for a bit. Can't make big steps, and the idea to hire a scientific advisory board is on ice again (although we'd really need them. Voluntaries anywhere?), but we have some reserves.

@pharesim there are a ton of actual card carrying credentialed scientists on this platform. Take a look at @lemouth since he's a scientist who works at the LHC at CERN. Many of his commentors and followers are scientists.

We are here you just need to know where to look.

@lemouth is already in our chat. What's more difficult is getting people from outside the MINT bubble .
We're working on promotion material to reach out though, it will all come together.

I indeed already discussed slightly in the past with @pharesim. I would like to discuss further and be more involved in the pevo initiative (I actually already discuss the ideas with some of my peers), but as always, time is the issue... I will however try to be more present from now on!

Ok, looks like we are on the same team, as the whales that don't vote for your witness are, I suspect, the whales who no longer vote for any of my posts. It doesn't matter what I write, there are some against me. Unfortunately, the centralization of power is having devastating effects on the quality and future viability of this platform. There are too many boys posing as Gods, and for this reason, I think the growth is limited until a more cohesive upper layer exists. When our livlihoods are so directly affected by the warring atmosphere, I am afraid that this experiment is just like the one on the outside world. I'm interested in PEVO, as i stated before. I think I need to learn a bit more about it first.....and I do know some scientists, just a few who I could email about this. I could imagine that getting scientists on board will be a little like herding cats....

You are where I want to be.
Well...sort of. I would love to call Steemit my part time job but it's going to take significant work. But I'm sorry to hear you dropped out of 19th position! You've had my vote...for what it's worth :)

My voting power is by now mostly used by project curie and similar initiatives. I'm amazed how the community manages to spread the rewards over more posts and happy to be able to help!

Glad for your contributions and looking forward to your future posts after you're done with your job :)

Congrats....this is my goal too. I am new and never blogged but I have hope. Up vote my new blogs would be appreciated. How did u scceed in here?

I love that image!

Congrats on your freedom! I joined steemit a few days ago and I'm definitely hooked. I'm working to share a revolutionary energy technology my dad invented, called the GEET Fuel Processor. Funds have been the major obstacle (besides political shit and general suppression). With with a strong aversion to the dollar, and people clinging to theirs so tightly, coming by the resources for research and development and distribution til this point has been a trick. I even started a geodesic dome home and greenhouse building network project to help with food, shelter and water issues while earning funds for GEET, but lately I've been feeling strongly I should be promoting GEET directly, full time. Steemit is the answer to my prayers! I'm also hoping some whales will help me along. I'm not sure if you are one (and how that works exactly) but you seem to be into cutting edge tech and freedom, so I hope you like my posts and find them worthy of an upvote and resteem. Thanks for your support in advance, and good luck in all your endeavors as well!

Find ich super :-) Ganz viel Spass und Erfolg :-)

I am delighted to vote for you as witness

Wow this is some bold statement. Anyway, from this article it seems that it will be possible for you to make a living from Steeming on Steem :D
Good luck and check my article. Thanks

Awesome!
I wish you the best and support the fulfillment of your freedom!
Steem ON!

Congrats. Be free always, all ways. Followed you already.

Brave move. Cheers to freedom!
Im looking forward to steemdice and your development in the future

After the launch of steem it was immideately clear to me that I won't have any motivation left for the dull day job. Unfortunately I've been trapped in a contract

Tell me about it.... I can't wait to free myself too from that filthy contract and dedicate more time to Steem!

Congratulations on doing so well on here :)

@pharesim, I watched your interview with someone and I remember on that video you said you haven't been out of the country. Now you have a chance and I wish you bump along people who has the very same kindness and support you have given the many of us. Thank you for all the supports you gave so many of my posts. I wish you all the good luck you would be needing and so much fun on your trip!

@pharesim.

Goodbye day job.
Thank you pharesim and steemit.

nice post, it is how many of us feel but some of us are still new and learning, we are minnows lol. I am trying hard though. Keep up your good work, resteemed/voted and shared.

That's awesome! This post gives a lot of hope to people minnows like me! That it's possible. Thanks for the motivation , only good things lay ahead for Steemit.

Thank you for being so daring to leave your full time job to work on steemit, even though it is risky, I'm hoping it will turn out to be the best decision! Hope I can extend my gratitude to you in person one day at one of the steemfests!

Love seeing this intendente commitment to the steem community, good luck wit her your future projects!

I will try to spend more time on the pevo chat. Sorry for being kind of absent. The initiative is great and the scientific community should push for it!

PS: if you pass by Paris, please let me know!

Congratulations. Your post received the most upvotes yesterday.

Hello @pharesim, good on you for going full on on your dreams!
It will be hard work, scary, and you have no idea how it will turn out. But at least you're on the ride whizzing past all those who are stuck on the old mindset of slowly marching towards retirement.
I wish you and steemit all the best.
I'm looking forward to joining the ride ;-)

Great post @pharesim ! I just want to say a big thank you for your support!
Project curie helped me too and I am so happy about that, I try my best to give back to the comunity by following and upvoting good old/new content.
