Roman Empire’s sunken sin city, a real-life Atlantis preserved under the sea off Naples, Italy, now the playground of divers

Baiae was an ancient Roman town situated on the northwest shore of the Gulf of #Naples and now in the comune of Bacoli. Seven emperors, including #Augustus and #Nero , had villas here, as did #JuliusCaesar and #MarkAnthony. The poet Sextus Propertius described the town as a place of vice, which was "foe to virtuous creatures."

The lower part of the town later became submerged in the sea due to local volcanic, bradyseismic activity which raised or lowered the land. This part of the city now lies four to six metres underwater in a submerged archaeological park. divers from around the world come to see its well-preserved ruins, and statues of this 2,000-year-old resort, famed for luxury and vice, are now a marine visitor attraction.
