School projects were never that exciting when I was at school. From memory, my highlight was making an apron in domestic science class - wow! They're a wee bit more intriguing nowadays as you can see from the following photos.
A couple of years ago my nephew took part in a school project to launch a raspberry Pi into the sky on a weather balloon capturing images and data on route.
The balloon took off on a 24 hour adventure reaching altitudes of 120,000 ft transmitting images every 6 minutes. The temperatures fell as low as -35 ˚C while it collected amazing images of planets, sunrises and cloud formations. After it's incredible journey, it fell into the sea over the south coast of Ireland.
The "HiPi" is a project to promote STEAM - Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics - a combination of skills in one awesome project. Fourteen students from two schools (Cookstown High School and Holy Trinity College in Northern Ireland) were involved in the design, flight predictions and Raspberry Pi coding using python. The payload consisted of a Raspberry Pi A+, camera and a Pi In The Sky module.

So cool! When I was a kid I was utterly obsessed with space... okay, I still am. I would have gone insane if something like this was available a few years ago. There are so many cool things for my kids to look forward to.
