Why You'd Be Much Happier if You Viewed Steemit as a Lottery

in steem •  8 years ago  (edited)

We continue to witness tons of nail-biting over how blogging and curation awards are...well...awarded.  Some are freaking out over the disproportionality.  Others over are freaking out over "whales"--that they are biased, that they are stupid (and only reward "boobs"), that they have too much control, etc..  Many have speculated that, unless this issue of rewards is resolved, the entire Steem project could be jeopardized.

I'm sure that the awards algo could be refined and perfected beyond where it is today, but I honestly don't think that to be at all critical to Steem's future success.  In fact, I think the reward system could be orders of magnitude worse and Steem would still succeed beyond imagination.  Here's why:

Steem tokens are valuable because they give holders influence.  More Steem Power = more social influence on the Steemit website.   Since everyone wants to be influetial, Steem have value--people are actually willing to pay for them or work for them.

Note that Steem have value regardless of the method by which they are dispersed to users.  Truth is, Steem could be awarded to authors and curators by a centralized entity purely at random (almost like a lottery) and people would still flock to the site en masse.  Why?  For the same reason people buy lottery tickets--a chance to get a lot for a little.  People by the billions have adopted social media with zero chance of being paid, right?  If "buying a lottery ticket" is as easy as cross-posting something from your "normal" social media platform to Steemit, then ...well...who wouldn't?

My point is simply this:  Even if Steemit were as bad as some say--centralized, biased, arbitrary, overlooking "real value" for "boobs"--it just wouldn't matter.  People would still flock to it by the millions for the simple chance, even a remote one, of getting something for essentially nothing, or for even just the opportunituy to watch others get something for nothing.

In fact, many of us would be so much a happier if we conceived of the blogging and curation awards as a random lottery rather than as "recognizing the value" of our efforts.  If we viewed it as a lottery, we'd all be much more authentic about what we post.  Our sense of self worth wouldn't be tied to how much money our last post made. We'd be grateful and gracious if and when we "win", and we wouldn't feel slighted when we didn't.

So Steemsters, just breath.  Relax.  Realize that your worth is not determined by your Steem.  Put your faith in randomness.  And by doing so, free yourself to reach for the sky while releasing your attachment to outcomes!

Maybe you'll grab it.  Maybe you won't.  Regardless, you'll have had an amazingly pleasurable and liberating stretch.

Honestly, I think that's how I HAVE been looking at it. And I think that's what's letting me down, just like when I play lottery. What I need to do is concentrate on making sure that what I post is the best of my best, which I've been trying to do. There's been a few hits, but no home runs...

...yet. ;-)

Its true position

I think this comment is a home-run! Well-deserved, @winstonwolfe :)

how often do you play lottery, and how often do you sit here, on steemit?)

I've been on Steemit for about a week.
Therefore, I have not played lottery in about a week.

Also, it costs money to play lottery.
Doesn't cost me a dime to be here. :)

time is money :D

@decrypt That's very true. However, I may have a unique situation in that I work from home, so I have more time than a lot of people I think.

Same here, you pick the right number on lottery if you get alot of votes.
You newer know who is do it. That is so cool with steemit.
It only depends on wath the whales likes or not, there it is monney.
Nice post BTW. Keep up the good blogging :)

Well well well.... @dantheman & @sean-king
From the bottom of my heart...thank you both. :)

This post is great ! It's definitely an idea I haven't thought about.

I feel like people need to be more grateful for what they have! No other social network platform pays to create and curate content. Why are people so pissy? Even if you make just 100.00 you made more on here then you did on Facebook.

I don't post shit on facebook. Not because it doesn't pay, but because even my friends and family on facebook are vapid and ignorant and not fun to converse or interact with. I was told that steemit was a platform to empower innovators and since I don't even use money, I thought I'd at least find intelligent interaction here so I spent quite a few hours posting some content that could really make the world a better place. Unfortunately, I signed up right after the first payout happened and the Beaches & Boobs ass-kiss-a-thon was already under way. When it first happened, every 10-15 posts in trending, there was something worth reading, good stuff was popping up under the new section pretty frequently, and little discussions happened but were rare. A few days later and everything in trending is garbage, the posts coming in are mostly vapid, and decent conversation about meaningful topics is nonexistent.

What could be an awesome platform is going the way of myspace/twitter/fecesbook, right from the start. I see great potential wasted because market share is more important than the share market. That's why I'm pissy.

Why are you here?

To connect with other forward thinkers, inventors, and innovators in hopes of creating things that reduce people's need on products and services created by slavery systems. Well, that's why I joined. These days I just poke my head in sometimes to watch the train wreck, and post little comments trying to wake the whales up and turn things around. I really thought this idea could be a catalyst for big positive change in the world.

A few people have begged me to stay and say that my perspective is needed. Some even said that 80% of the core users share my views but are too afraid to express them because they're scared of offending the whales. Since I think money is a tool for assholes and retards, I don't care who I piss off when I speak the truth.

All of that said, every time I log on here, the glimmer of hope that I had for the platform becomes a little smaller and a little further away. I probably won't bother posting here at all for much longer.

You've clearly got it all figured out. You must live a fulfilling life.

I agree 100%, cool off people, put up some content! Then sit back and enjoy a job well done, If others like it , you might hit the LOTTO!!

Proof of work is a lottery too in some sense.

Sometimes instead of getting mad at the random cat picture that makes 5,000USD you have to ask "Why not?"

;)

We are lucky to be paid at all for the fun we are having.

Many people seem to forget that this network is in beta. Many ideas and proposals are made with unnecessary drama. The solutions will come from changes or improvements the algorithms, and the development of a strong community. It will be a continuous process more pragmatic than dramatic .

Although lottery winners generally end up depressed. And weird stuff tends to happen them.

Example.

It was a good read.
The thing is that you have to have that great post that will make a whale vote for you. I have started a month ago, and I was posting only crap. Seriously. Some domain names that I have, some brexit news, etc. CRAP:))
Then, luck started to come to me with the curation of Steemit 101- the Amazon book review and gained 200 STEEM.

Then, the strato initiative: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@gabi-dumitriu/hello-steem-community
And I am a regular guy, no boobs, or makeup tutorial. I guess it depends of your luck....Or about how good you write:)
I guess, we will never know:))

Oh, one more thing. I have also created some cool stuff for steemit, but, hey, I don't have boobs, correct?:)) I have tried to promote it using Augmented Reality.
And noting.
https://steemit.com/marketing/@gabi-dumitriu/my-first-try-to-promote-steemit-through-augmented-reality

You spammer. Post boobs of gtfo!

I'm kidding. ;)

I agree about the award system and how changes could help, but we have it pretty good now.

People want influnce. I am writing a series of blogs on steemit about persuasion to help people increase their influence. Check it out if you've got a minute.

Thanks

When I read 'Sean' at the bottom, I felt a bit confused, like: is that an Irish womans's name??

You make a fair point but my only objection to this is that the lotteries are a delusion. Your chances of winning are 1 in 'x' number of millions. Yes people still play the lottery regardless and that is why to some extent I agree with what you're saying. However, it undermines the philosophy of what this platform is and what separates from the others, which ultimately I think would be harmful to it's success. It doesn't encourage quality content. It would encourage posting for the sake of posting to be in with a chance at the draw.

It's really tempting to sign up a bunch of fake accounts and set them all up to constantly spam the site with pics of naked chicks on beaches and thousands of tags. I have better things to do but that's exactly what's going to happen if people, the whales in particular, keep propagating the lottery system and upvoting stupid stuff.

Please not a lottery, i don't have luck in money games ; )

Think the same!

I think I tend to take a longer range view of steemit. I don't look for it to be a lottery. Over the long time I think it will evolve to include a type of work ethic if it is to survive. I needs to also foster much more conversation to be a truely social networking platform. https://steemit.com/steemit/@iamwne/persistence-approach-to-steemit-a-practical-guide

I agree! I'm not saying that it is a lottery. I'm just suggesting that it improves the user experience to think of it that way. At least for some, especially the sensitive among us.

As someone who writes often about matters of the heart and soul I tend to feel like I am a bit on the sensitive side of things too. It has been encouraging to find that article was valued in dollars. But I don't want my long term view to be one of oh well, I did not win. I am looking for a win under my terms. For me it is a win when a discussion happens. I think that you are right for some it could enhance the experience. Thanks for the feedback.

The people with the work ethic were signing up, but then the Beaches & Boobs trend started and the hard workers now have to claw their way out from under a giant pile of crap to get noticed, so they're giving up. Unless something drastic happens, I don't see a long term for this platform as far as actually networking innovators goes. It will probably make a few people a bunch of money though.

I hope for a different outcome. So in the meanwhile I will try to post things that I think are in someway meaningful and compelling. Not that everything will be. But for those of us who care it just may make the difference.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck.

That goes both ways. May you prosper in wealth and peace.

Wealth and peace are contradicting terms but I appreciate the sentiment. :)

So this is the new propaganda to pacify those that put a lot of time and effort into creating good content only to be ignored/buried under feces? It sure seems like it's miles away from the talk early on about rewarding content fairly.

You know what's crazy? I don't play the lottery, or gamble, because it's a waste of my time and the main thing it does is make rich dickheads more rich. Most people realize this and only the ignorant and desperate don't. Have you ever stood in line at a convenience store while the toothless obese morons in front of you buy ticket after ticket, losing $30 to win $10 and calling it a victory? Pushing the, "Hey! It's a lottery!" approach, is going to bring in more ignorant and desperate, which is exactly what's happening here. Not my idea of good content or the crowd I'd like to be interacting with.

This is smelling more and more like another ponzi scheme as time goes on.

I really hope that someone takes the open source code and develops an altruistic, intelligent alternative to steemit. It could have been a great idea.

You're going to do very well here.

In fact, many of us would be so much a happier if we conceived of the blogging and curation awards as a random lottery rather than as "recognizing the value" of our efforts.

What are the odds? Who do we count as whales? Let us be generous and say the top 1000. Potentially, Steemit is looking for 2-4 billion users.

Some will simply never be "rich" on Steemit, and that is okay.

Lottery always hope won :))

The post is pretty good :)

I have a comment to the boobs-part: Ironic that you have posted some good looking pics yourself.
I think the best thing on steemit is the fact that you get the money for votes and not for views. On youtube you can use some clickbait techniques like a thumbnail with boobs, to make people watch atleast the first add. On steemit people only press the vote button if they really like the content. So no one should hate the girls for posting pics of themselfes and earning money with it, because the people really liked the picture/content and voted for it.

Exactly. Unlike some, I'm not anti-Boob at all. Quite the contrary.

I completely agree! A lot of people out there hear crypto currency and shut down because it is unfamiliar to them. At least with steem it it is easier to understand "working" for it.

I have actually proposed in a previous post to run a Steemit SP lottery.... https://steemit.com/proposals/@claudiop63/sp-lottery

I like it!

Good points.. Like I always say in my posts even if 99 times you make nothing you only need 1 to go viral :D

I'd be much happier if you Up Voted my Area 51 post.

https://steemit.com/area/@steve-mcclair/area-51-steemit-has-arrived#comments

People have been saying this over and over. It's boring and,

Not True!!!

It's easy to see the patterns among posts that go big. That's probably exactly how you came up with the idea for this post and why we see so many cookie cutter posts.

Congrats on your "lucky" winnings here but your thesis is wrong in my view.

Read my post again. I'm not saying it is a lottery, I'm saying that it wouldn't matter if it was.

its not an lottery, well written posts like yours will get an reward.
my upvote gave you 1.3 $ reward.
just have a look at this, it will make you feel better

https://steemit.com/steemit/@knozaki2015/my-upvote-was-worth-5-06-usd-25300-or-how-to-earn-the-maximum-curation-reward

Great insights. Thanks for sharing them.

So much this:

So Steemsters, just breath. Relax. Realize that your worth is not determined by your Steem.
Thanks Sean. Another great post this community needs.

Almost all frustration can be rooted in unmet expectations. Either they were never communicated, they were communicated but were unreasonable, or they were well communicated and not met.

It's not random actually, you are rewarded if you are a good marketer for your post, and a good sucker to find whales to vote you up.

I didn't say it was random. I said you'd be happier if you treated it like it was.

I think we are lucky to be paid anything. I have seen some posts that totally deserve it then others that have made me think what was that . Good luck to anyone who manages to earn, as they say every little bit helps

correct.

Thus is exactly why I view steemit as a lottery

Interesting conception

Great post. I am happy to be in such great company here.

How big do you think Steemit can get if everyone thinks its not fair? Where will this end up? Obviously there is an issue here with fairness that's why everyone keeps talking about it. So what's the future then?

Hmmm. Well, it's certainly "fairer" than Facebook, where users do all the work and Mark Z gets all the money. In fact, it's "fairer" than about any other social media site out there at the moment. I suppose it's possible that someone will create a "fairer" site where awards are more evenly distributed among users, but...would that really attract more people? I'm not so sure. Personally, I'd prefer to make nothing on most posts and a couple hundred bucks on some rather than a few pennies on every post. But maybe that's just me.

Hey Sean I see you have 68,000 steem power and you are one of the original testing people. What's your point that you like your free ride why would you like to give it up? I really wish people could be real.

I was not one of the original testing people. I joined Steemit more than a month after it launched. My ride has not been "free". Look at my wallet history. I PURCHASED most of my Steem.

My bad Sean if you purchased most of your steem than I guess you are entitled to your opinion of if you like the way it is or not. I am not going to voice my opinion anymore about this subject because it is so obvious that as steemit grows the people bringing up this point will grow. I think it is good that people can share what they think about something without being penalized for it so I hope people continue to voice their opinion on how they feel and not just suck up to the platform the way it is. But people are trained to be that way so what we see here is a perfect microcosm of our society the way it is today. Anyways i hope to see a fix to this problem and a continued positive growth of steemit where all people have nothing but good things to say about steem and how they listened and fixed the problems.
