Thank for your support of my post about this topic. Some people got a little bit too excited upvoting themselves in comments as if it is expected behavior. Unfortunately this is not the point I was trying to make.

Only upvoting yourself is very inclusive. This is social environment there you can actually benefit from connections to others.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I don't see why people would respect an author any more for not self-upvoting when self-upvoting is a very rational choice given the way the system works, especially if your SP gives you the ability to add a Dollar or more to your net worth just by commenting here.

I have no problem with self upvoting. I do it all the time. But there is a kind of vague unwritten limit to how much is acceptable. People tend to notice when you do it too much (whatever too much is). Also, the people who really prosper on Steemit are those who very generously upvote others and network with them, and well... socialize on this social media platform.

If you're going to self-upvote at the expense of voting for others, then you're shooting yourself in the foot no matter what the code allows. For this reason, I don't think there is any reason to be overly concerned. The ones who truly abuse it will kind of weed themselves out. The rest of us who do it in moderation will call it a good ROI.

Exactly this. If you want steemit to work, you have to work it and that means doing more than just using your votes on yourself. You have to spread the love and get this economy working. Buying steem and steem power are also good, healthy inputs into the steemit economy.

This is so much bigger than just another website to post lunch photos on. Cryptocurrency and the block chain / smart contract / decentralized exchange of goods and services and compensation concepts are a new way to do business, and a new way to use "currency" and a new paradigm in economics.

Folks who don't take a few minutes to understand what we are doing on steemit will end up just being the "consumers" in this economy, but those who publish and interact and vote wisely and buy and sell STEEM and bring new spends into the economy by buying steem and steem power and participating actively in all things related to the eco-system will be the market makers, movers and shakers and ultimately the steemit whales and tycoons.

If you could go back in time, to the beginnings of the US Dollar. Would you rather become an innovative, highly contributing wealth creator, like say Andrew Carnegie or Henry Ford or do you want to end up just being a basic consumer who sort of let it all pass them by only to end up working all day for peanuts?

The difference is in the balance of selfishness and selflessness that you apply to the endeavor.

So by all means, vote for yourselves and your friends. But if you exclude everyone else, then @sean-king is right, you have only set yourself up to be excluded by everyone else.

#LetThatSinkIn

We are all in this together. If you work only for yourself, this place won't last very long. If we work to promote others, and earn the value of promotion BY others for ourselves, we will get MUCH further as a whole towards helping steemit and steem achieve the momentum and attraction they need to take over the world!

exactly what he said !! LOL! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘everything in moderation!

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Moderation... and balance!

THIS . . so much THIS

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

exactly !

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Precisely! :)

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

And, I'd point out, the fact that @sean-king didn't vote on this post makes me respect him immensely more.

Keep that in mind as you're deciding whether to vote on your own comments: the community will likely esteem people who refrain from self voting.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

But that doesn't take away the incentive for nontechnical new users whose previous business might have been sending out scam emails, or amongst the numerous cultures in the world where such scamming is considered admirable. There is quite a few and that's what is gonna come to the table with this self voting thing. That's my prediction.

Want to build a self-vote canceler?

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

I'm sure that @abit and @smooth probably already did this. You should ask them if they still have the Experiment bot scripts floating around. Just change the criteria (self vote vs whale vote) and it will do everything we need. hehehe

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

What's really bugging me is the rampant self comment voting going on.

I've been trying to be a good example and resist the urge to do it, but there are a lot of greedy people on here draining the reward pool through self votes on useless comments.

How would you feel if I gave myself a vote like this, 10 times every day ?

I'll remove this vote within a day, its just to illustrate a point

i swear I would feel very upset ,maybe we could implement limit on self votes or reduce % reward for it

lol....and a good point it does illustrate. @jerrybanfield was talking about the same thing. Well said...well articulated. Thank you for this

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

It bothers me too. It wouldn't be difficult to build a comment self-vote canceler. Maybe there's a whale out there who would be willing to donate some Steem Power to such a project.

If people knew they were risking losing their vote by self-voting, they would self-vote less and go find more valuable things to do with their votes.

If I get time and nobody else beats me to it I'll make a shaaaame bot that reports the worst abusers.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Perfect. It could even include veiled threats of flags. :)

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

hey fellow brisbanite buddy @ausbitbank - I was wondering if there's a way I can get in touch with you to talk about steemit related stuff (well, really, for me to learn from you) in person or a more private channel? cheers, magic monk ([email protected])

Hey mate im available in the PAL discord chat a lot of the time - https://discord.gg/KcVwd5B

k I'm there. sent you a private message. thanks again.

Excellent little nuggets of wisdom there Sean. I aim to split my daily takings 50/50 between myself and others. At the moment it's 70/30 as I start to recover my voting power back to 100% - currently it's 45%!! :(

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Thank god i was worried :)

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I am new, and I still don't understand how this all works. I mean the upvote yourself box is checked by default - that's kind of suggesting? I wish there was a manual of the best practices in upvoting. Is there one? I'd be happy to read it!

Exactly! Thats what i mean.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Yes Thankyou .. It is as simple as that !

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Exactly, you can be selfish to a degree, but you should be able to keep paying it forward as well.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

True, you should upvote newbies, they will follow you and when will grow will upvote you back.

Long term mindset

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

will beat short term thinking EVERY TIME! It just takes longer to win! ;)

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Absolutely true!

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Absolute truth is absolute always! :)

I upvote every article that I stumble upon which has a good content and I am also hoping for others to do the same as well.

I agree. I couldn't care less when someone makes a comment on one of my posts, and then upvotes himself. I'm guilty of it. And I have some Steemit pals who I want to consistently support, though I do still like to see real content. There's a LOT of content on Steemit these days. For some, especially those first starting out, it's hard to be seen. Sometimes their own vote is one of a very few that they're getting. So no respect loss on my end.
But I also want to see Steemit be a success and use my tiny vote to reward those who are working hard to create great content. So I spent a lot of time trolling around, looking for folks who I haven't yet connected with. The wind up is that not everyone that I follow can get my vote (for what it's worth), but I can say that I try to spread some love around.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I agree fully with cork, in fact I posted yesterday something similar. Follow the Rules post

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

And I read and commented there.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

what a nice person :3

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Haha, I'd like to Upvote myself.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Thank you very much @sean-king .Your support is very important to us ,i would ask if you would be our mentor on this ,it will be great to have some one ,our community will look upto to as a source of inspiration and support

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

yes, don't only jerk yourself and your friends off, but also remember to help your fellow steemians. there's enough love to go around people! it's the only way we can grow as a community.

Spread the love around with a mindset of abundance.

Hey @sean-king, how much do you suggest we buy vs how much we should earn? I went to Power Up yesterday and STEEM suggested I deposit 20 BTC!

I believe that was displaying the maximum recommended deposit, not the minimum. Buy only as much as you can afford based upon the amount of influence you want to have over Steem.

Short and sweet...all you needed to say. Love this!

Great post...

Quite new and still trying to figure out everything here ;) My bf introduced me, who is more 'steemit' savvy than I am, but I'm starting to get acquainted with how the system works here ;) Thanks for the constant advice! And your golden upvotes too of course ;) May the Steem be with you!!! Happy July!!! :D

True true true! Let's make some teamwork here! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Definitely right sir.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

That is absolutely true dear steemit fellow. Upvote for yourself and your friends make steemit wonderful platform.

This concise principle will continue to make steem valuable and steemit a great community for a long time. Thanks for voicing it so clearly Sean.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

Sometimes I go through my comments, and if one was popular and is about to pay out, I'll upvote it so that it turns into added SP within 24 hours. My intent is to make the majority of my upvotes, which go to other users, worth a little bit more. I'm not sure if this is a) actually effective, or b) an asshole move?

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I agree!

yah you're right πŸ˜ƒ

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

But it still depends.

remember that SP is an investment. So long-term here!!!

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

Thanks very true @sean-king we are a team supporting each other is important.
on that note check out the steemit project we are embarking on in Zimbabwe https://steemit.com/steemit/@tinashe/steemit-future-in-africa-zimbabwe-going-viral
Thank you

Hey pall ;)

Thank you, I'm a newbie and still don't get about the up upvote, I have bought a good amount of steem power yet my vote only gives people two pennies, once in a while it will give someone ten dollars, confused, thank you for your time to read this🌿😜

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ (edited)

The value of your vote varies with your voting power. If you vote too much your voting power decreases and the value of your vote decreases accordingly. It slowly restores back to 100 percent if you stop voting for a while. You can check your voting power at steemd.com/@cecirod1218.

The system is wrong. You can get more rewards by upvoting yourself than curating content. Until that is changed, people will keep upvoting them selves.

I've been here over a year, friend. You're been her less a month. You barely understand how things work around here and you're already trolling? Let me clue you in: Trolling doesn't pay on the Steem blockchain, friend. Either learn some manners or go back to Reddit or from wherever else you came.
