Steem @ Mondo.NYC Music + Blockchain Conference
Earlier this month @sndbox was a Media Partner at an event in Brooklyn, called Mondo.NYC. This 3-day conference and music festival was action packed with everything from performances to panels on blockchain, university idea competitions and a Steem workshop!
We teamed up with Steemit Inc.'s @andrarchy to showcase the Steem ecosystem during a 1 hour workshop - highlighting what artists could do with it, which DApps were available and why Steem is a powerful resource for musicians to learn about and begin using right now. Here are a handful of graphics and slides we created for the event. If they're useful, please feel free to use them for your own events and workshops!
Steem for Creatives
Artists [musicians specifically] stand to benefit a lot from the Steem ecosystem. Here; all kinds of media, creativity, experimentation and engagement can be rewarded. This is a new kind of social network powered by blockchain tech.
Creativity is a risky business. Producing your work through traditional social-media nets you no direct gains and are time-consuming gambles. A lot of pressure is placed on your "final product" to sell and to compensate for time spent throughout the process (90%).
Steem helps tokenize the previously missing 90%. This flips the norm to help make your story where the value is. Whether you work as a freelancer, within an organization, or are trying to mobilize a new initiative, Steem helps you publish all kinds of media and maximize the rewards from your process.
If you're an artist, one day you might sketch out an idea, visit a place of inspiration, record a sample or build a prototype. Why can't you share all of those pieces of the creative puzzle on one network? Sharing fragments on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram don't add up and are incredibly time consuming.
Steem has over 400 applications for you to choose from. Whatever kind of creative you are, you can build a network (that exists across all Steem apps) and let your ideation develop organically.
Here's @carrotcake's drawing a cover image for The Creative Crypto Magazine. She breaks down an illustration into a series of blog posts and images that reflect her thought process. Why just publish the final piece? Everyone wants to know what the stories are hiding behind the canvas...
For our team @sndbox, Steem Park was our proof of process. As designers, could we kickstarter-ify the Steem Blockchain to build something physical? Could we use posts to actually pay for furniture... and then build up an audience who might want to sit on that furniture?
This was Steem Park, a design build project that used Steemit.com to pay for urban furniture and build new community networks. Learn more about the project here.
Next up, building a Magazine on Steem specifically for creatives looking to learn more about cryptocurrency. Here, we showcased The Creative Crypto Magazine as an example of "Steem powered" but also an outlet for artists to learn more about what's happening on the blockchain!
The future of decentralized creativity is bright and powerful. Steem is something that any musician can dive right into and begin learning more about. We ended this presentation by exploring some of the DApp websites that catered to musicians like https://dsound.audio/ and https://d.tube/.
We're continuing to build Media Partnerships in and around New York to draw more creatives into cryptocurrency. This was an exciting event that we're already developing next steps for. A huge thanks to the Mondo team and Steemit Inc. for pushing the conversation forward and creating a forum for the crypto-curious to explore!

@sndbox The opportunities you are writing about is only true if the dapps actually work... 🤔
We recently joined the Steem blockchain with our record label to share most of our discography in a decentralized fashion. Already in our few days here we have heard back from Steemians telling us our uploads on @dsound wont play back for them!
Some of our main members like @xtetrahedron have been trying to use the DSound platform for around 1 year now without it ever working like expected for anything other then with very small mp3 files; like a single track or a preview. Playback of anything has also always been buggy for him on the platform 😕
For now our workaround is to turn our music into videos with the album cover being the visual aspect, and upload them to @dtube. DTube seems to work fine for us so far, but a dedicated music platform that worked would be the best.
@xtetrahedron voiced earlier today in a different comment thread here on Steemit how he would be interested in taking part of building a new music streaming dapp interfaced with the Steem blockchain and make it work like regular users expect from a 2018 music streaming website; if some other people are interested to join in on the project... 😶

We need more of this sentiment and a deep focus on the essence of what Steemit can help us accomplish here and beyond. I find it absolutely important that new social media networks follow the fundamentals set in by legacy web platforms like Youtube and Reddit in order to smoothen the transition of populations. Initially, this will signal more of a mainstream audience, as well as catch on to a rising group of content creators emerging in the increasingly accessible technologic ecosystem.
More people are spending time online, either actively communicating or passively consuming media, such as with popular online streaming music services that tie the listening experience now across multiple environments where consumers exist. People are flocking to cultivated media channels like Youtube is for video and Instagram is for mobile images, content creators (read: developers) must establish first contact in public forum-private company relationship.
As for sources like @sndbox and @creativecrypto, I envision a link between visual arts and technology. Much similar to music, since the advent of the Internet, all other forms of media have been in a sort of identity crisis, a schism between the creators and the company has now split the convention of royalties and copyrights on its head. How do we maintain the integrity of such property? Why should art be protected? Is it for history, for humanity, or something else? Hopefully, as more people from all walks of life can plug into the concept of cryptocurrency will more mean of increasing its utility abroad many capital needs in the so-called real world. Virtually, anyone who makes decisions in life must be an artist; at the least, those who are hard working must remain inspired.
Thank you @sndbox for the updates!

Hi @alfheimr-records, thanks for your comment - no doubt, these tools need to get better. They are a long ways off from centralized platforms like SoundCloud or Youtube. The fact that you're interested in rallying a team to build a better DApp is a testament to the utility of this blockchain. And the ability to express feedback and critique is super important to make those discoveries and improve / educate the community.
The fact that - as an artist - you can log into this blockchain, share feedback / critique and can then be rewarded for that feedback is pretty exciting. (i.e. comments receiving upvotes.) Artists have never had that kind of a voice before.
Across the whole blockchain world today - we're a ways out, and there's a ton that needs improving. But, progress is being made, devs are building new tools everyday and users are challenging those tools in an effort to improve them. Steem has been laying a powerful infrastructure and our hope is that more artists (like you) dive in and hold the developers to a high standard. Anyways, thanks again for your thoughts and feedback!

We haven't been aware of the problems with dsound but we also haven't had a reason to be interested in music streaming or playing yet. I don't think it would be terribly hard for us to extend our capabilities into a music playback platform that would crawl through all music posted with correct tags. Initially at least only working in browser but a relatively simple set up for discovery.
Additionally, you can use our platform to make music VRideos or place music on Augmented Reality... like a link to play the music meant to go with an art piece or tell it's story.

Such a baggage of material, work and experience you have been collecting... In some way this kind of events seems to be like when a collector shows to the visitor's his treasures, and for sure you guys will be proud of that.
By the way...such a team with @Andrarchy hahahaa, so the one that doesn't understand the Steem concept is totally lost!
Good vibes for that Conference guys!

Woah... a music + blockchain event?? Sounds like a dream come true for this creative crypto girl.
Thanks for updating us on how it all went! Awesome that you guys and @andrarchy had a chance to highlight Steemit.
As someone who based a big part of their “Steem career” on music - I can truly back up the strength of the music community on the platform. Thanks for getting out there and representing Steemit!
