Faucet and Help for New Voters: Why I’m Giving Away My Steem Dollars

in steem •  8 years ago  (edited)

By Richard Kaplan, @steemship
Co-author of Steemit 101, currently the #2 bestseller in Amazon’s Blogs & Blogging Category!

Some of you don’t know me, since I’ve been on vacation for a week. Most of you have joined since then! What a week! I regret having sold some of my STEEM for a lot less than they’re worth now, but I had some expenses to cover, so I’m thankful that Steemit made it possible for me to pay those.

My name is Richard Kaplan @steemship. I am an early Steemit adopter. Along with @donkeypong @cryptoctopus and @stellabelle I am a co-author of the Steemit 101 e-book that more than 1200 people have downloaded from here https://www.amazon.com/Steemit-101-Discover-Social-Content-ebook/dp/B01HC47NLU . I co-wrote the most recent revision to that book, which Tom posted a few days ago.

I’ve made thousands of dollars on Steemit already, plus more from this price increase. I’d like to share some of it with new users.

The Steemit opportunity is very real and I am proof that is works, because I have made thousands of dollars from writing and voting. Yes, you can make great money on Steemit by posting content that becomes popular. You also can make money by curating (voting and commenting) on posts. But some people find it difficult to start earning much money.

Making Money by Voting

Honestly, you will NOT make good money from voting unless you follow these three guidelines.

g

GUIDELINE 1. Do not vote right away on a new post, but wait a few minutes.

If you vote in the first few minutes, you are giving back most of your voting reward to the author. Your rewards are maximized when you are one of the first voters, but also when you vote closer to the 30-minute mark after a post has been submitted. Voters who vote immediately on a new post are sharing 100% of their rewards with the author. Voters who vote at 30 minutes or later are sharing 0% with the author. The time scale is linear: the 15 minute mark is 50%, etc.

People are still doing this wrong. If you’re trying to make money, don’t vote right away. For a deeper explanation of how Steemit’s reverse auction voting rewards work, please see this article that I co-wrote with @the-alien: https://steemit.com/steem/@steemship/how-to-vote-smart-and-profit-from-steemit-s-new-curation-rewards

GUIDELINE 2. Vote early on posts, but not too soon.

Wait! Didn’t I just tell you NOT to vote right away on posts? Yes, because at the very beginning, your rewards from voting are mostly given back to the author. Your relative share of those rewards increases as you wait longer in that 0-30 minute period after a post is published, so from that perspective, it’s better to wait at least a few minutes before voting.

Don’t vote right away on posts, but vote early enough to beat the crowd. You can claim a bigger reward by voting just before they do.

Even with the reverse auction voting rewards, you STILL make the most money by being one of the first people to discover a post that later becomes popular. Steemit is paying you to help discover good content and bring it to other peoples’ attention. If you are the first voter on a good post, or one of the first, then you vote will carry much more weight, and you will get paid more in rewards.

The trouble is knowing when to jump in. Because if it’s a really good post, others will jump in and vote well before the 30 minute mark. Some may even vote at 2 minutes or 5 minutes or 14 minutes. Either they do not understand that the author is taking most of these rewards or else they want to be first in line. Those near the front of the line will profit, but when they vote too early, they’ll give back most of it to the author.

When to vote? Experiment. Watch when other people vote on promising posts. Watch your wallet, which lists the rewards you get from voting: some will be bigger than others. Why? What worked better that time?

You also can use the steemd.com site to get more information about your votes and their influence; just open the post you want to see on Steemit, change the “it” in Steemit’s website address to “d” for steemd, and then go to that page. Scroll down and click on the Votes link to open the voting information; you can see when everyone voted on that post and what your voting strength shares were (relative to others).

See what strategy and what voting time seems most profitable for you. I would tell you the best time to vote if I knew, but the only way to know right now is to experiment and watch what others are doing. If it makes sense to beat the crowd, then jump in just before they do.

GUIDELINE 3. You need to hold as much Steem Power as possible, since that vastly increases your voting influence.

Power Up with as much value as you can afford to lock up (it’s locked up for 2 years, payable via Power Downs in 104 weekly cash-out payments). Here is a great recent post on why Powering Up is essential if you want to profit from Steemit’s growth: https://steemit.com/steemit/@donkeypong/come-for-the-steem-stay-for-the-steem-power-this-is-getting-unfair-for-bitcoin-ethereum-reddit-and-facebook

Problem: You don’t have much money. First of all, if you have any money that you don’t need to spend for necessities in the next few months, you cannot afford NOT to Power Up. I’ve heard people say that they can’t afford to do it, but you cannot afford NOT to Power Up. This opportunity for real growth with Steemit is just too great right now.

But I fully understand that many of you cannot afford to add much to your Steem Power holdings. That is why I am going to help 10 people today.

mb

Solution: Richard’s faucet. Let me reward 10 people who deserve it.

In 24 hours or a little longer, this post will pay out. At that time, I will pay $20 Steem Dollars (SD or SBD) to 10 new Steemit voters.

Criteria:

1.) You must be fairly new on Steemit. You haven’t made much money yet.

2.) Please reply to this post with a comment. Tell me who you are and something about you. Why should I help you? If you have made a good #introducemyself post, you can include a link to it also.

The 10 best comments (my choice) will each earn $20 in Steem Dollars. I have the money now, but will wait until this post pays out, so that everyone has that time period (usually 24-36 hours) to post your best comments.

Winners: Please use your $20 to Power Up your account and increase your voting strength. Little by little, that will help you build up your Steem Power and start to make more money from voting. When those curation rewards are paid to you with more Steem Power, you can gradually accumulate more.

May the best comments win!

hi, Richard i have joined steem couple days ago. iw been trying to figure out steemit and everything leads to being a blogger(witch i am not) or investing for more profit(what i can not afford). My mon has a cancer and i work more hours than i should in UK just so i cuold help her out. 20$ wuold be appreciated.

Hey Richard, Big ups to you for the tips in this post, wow, and here I was voting on stuff right away that I thought was pretty cool with no idea how this truly works. I'm still learning and this has been a huge help. I just started here a few days ago and it's pretty cool I must say. I'm a part time freelance photographer/videographer and I do other side gig work to pay the bills. My best post so far was actually of a photo I took which is awesome I might post up more of my work as time goes on. This has been an experiment for me and as I'm sure for many others but it looks like I might be here to stay! Thanks again for the lookout on the tips here, amazing stuff! Peace! -Chris

Thanks for the advice, it's fascinating! I found, beyond my well received #introduceyourself post, once I started posting regularly I was receiving at most a few cents for my writing. Do you think investing in powering up will in some way help with that, even if it's only with a few dozen dollars worth of Steem?

Powering Up has a big effect on your voting rewards, but as far as I know, it does not affect your content (writing) rewards. I would be glad to look at your writing and see if there i anything I can suggest to help get you making more money.

That would be amazing! Feel free to reply to any of my posts or write your comments here. I'm not sure of a better way to communicate, since the slack seems to be offline. IRC could be an option if you have a lot of suggestions.

Slack is working fine. Have you joined? Signup link: http://steem.herokuapp.com .

I get the standard Heroku app can't deploy sort of message when I've tried today:

Application Offline for Maintenance
This application is undergoing maintenance right now. Please check back later.

Hi Richard great post! Thank-you for this info and for giving something back to help build the community. I purchased my first Bitcoin at $40 and have been talking about the blockchain for a few years. I like to think of the blockchain as a huge app store, bitcoin is just one app, Steemit is another...there will be thousands, maybe millions more..together we can change the world. I'm always trying to meet like minded people. So here I am. Steemit is very promising and I predict great growth. Bringing non crypto people together is great for the ecosystem, the blockchain, Steemit and humanity in general. A huge step in the right direction. Nice yo meet you. Mandax

Great advice Ive only been here a little while so i havent written much but i did write one article about basic income https://steemit.com/money/@masongrey/universial-income-discussion

Thanks for your kindness to help others hope you become more successful in future
And last but not less goodluck to other contestants too ! May the best win . 👍

Appreciate that you take a courage and write this post. Not every single guy is willing to share such information because it is priceless. I actually thought that it is impossible to make money here just by upvoting, turns out I was wrong. Like in every single sphere and every new platform you need to know some tips and tricks that can make the most difference. With your help I will be more attentive on when I'm doing such action.

Besides I am on Steemit only 2 days and I already felt in love with its structure. And you can read my into here as well - https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@dmitriybtc/stopping-by-to-say-hello-from-ukraine

Hello. I signed up about 6-7 weeks ago, but I thought my account hadn't been created since there was no confirmation. I came across the Cointelegraph.com article from the other day and discovered that my account was created. It's unbelievable that writers and other content creators have been this successful utilizing a blockchain, but it's happening! When I have some time off in the lovely town of North Woodstock, New Hampshire, I will be introducing myself. Thank you all.

Hey , to prove that I'm reading contetnt I will tell you that your Amazon link isn't working, beacuse you taged "."
Futhermore I still haven't made my interduction post becuse I realy don't like to take pictures.
I'am honest person and I try wote on content that i feel will become good. I am part of steemit for 5 days I think.
My only rewards from curating are worht about 4 cents (for at least 3 days of upvoting various content).
I plan to post my Introduciton post when I come to it in terms of quality. I have been thinking of it since I started, but am scared it will be unworthy of money prize, but don't wan't to post something inorganic.
I am 31 and I work as a elementary school teacher in Croatia, and I was on 5 days 7-8 grade trip two weeks ago, I took maybe took 2 pictures of nature with my phone during that time (man I had excelent interduction post if I was picture person).
If am I'am to recieve prize it will be nice incentive for me to post my introduction (if my newly wedd wife doesn't make me do garden again), and to become productive part of community and not spamer.
TY

Fixed the link. Thanks for pointing out that issue!

Thank you for prize. I will use it to power up after I buy steem with it (damn price is skyrocketing). I will work on my interduction post today and post it tomorrow.

Hi Richard, I think this is a great idea.

I have invested all I could afford (0.1 BTC) into Steem Power . I got 17.016 SP once I became familiar with the concept and my #introduceme post is here.
https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@jholmes91/hi-steemit-i-am-jamie

I have also converted all my payouts in Steem Dollars to STEEM. It seems that the posts about Steem itself make a lot of money but I'm fairly new to the concept and don't want to regurgitate content on here. I am genuinely looking to add original content and add value to this network, for example see my news post from Wednesday https://steemit.com/news/@jholmes91/why-the-bank-of-england-s-attempt-at-avoiding-recession-may-make-matters-worse

This is the type of news content I want to bring to people; educational, informative and based on current affairs.

Hi, Richard! Please help me, I feel a little stuck. I've joined steemit 3 days ago. I personally think my posts have a good content, but still they don't get upvotes. As for upvoting other posts, I really didn't know about that strategy. So thank you for the advice! I'll try following your tips. Here's my #introduceyourself post: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@diana.catherine/i-m-diana-ecaterina-neacsu-i-ve-just-found-steemit-and-i-think-the-founders-are-geniuses .

Thanks for the comment. Your posts are really good (I'd missed them before, sorry, so much good content coming just in that I don't see everything anymore!).

Here is my advice: Do a new introducemyself post. There was nothing wrong with the one you did; you had a nice picture and a very good description of who you are. The problem is that we've been getting a lot of posts that are formatted similarly to yours, and some of them have been fake. In other words, someone can write a couple of paragraphs and find a picture off the Internet.

People need to trust that it's you! These two posts (links below) show two possible methods of doing this. Basically, if you include a picture of yourself with Steemit and the date on that picture, it's much more reliable (than just a picture of you that, theoretically, someone might have grabbed off the Internet and presented as you). Or if you have a social media account on another site, you can paste a screenshot showing that you have posted on Facebook or Twitter, etc. and linked to Steemit.

Also, your later work is better, but your first introducemyself post needed better formatting.

Paragraph breaks. Subheadings with bold or headline text. Maybe another picture or two.

Begin your new introduceyourself post by saying that you did not know about the verification picture, and now you have included it, so here is your new inroducemyself post.

Then you can include the same text as before and format it so that it's a little more pleasing for the reader.

If you do those things, I'll bet you'll get a better reception for the introduction AND people will trust and begin upvoting your other articles...because they are good. Until you start getting upvotes reliably on your other posts, start them off by saying something like "This is original content, which I have written myself and am posting here on Steemit" so people know it is not copied from elsewhere.

Sorry for all of the verification necessities, but if you do that, you will start to get more votes.

One final step: Join the Slack channel which allows us to communicate directly (until they implement that feature on Steemit directly). Send me a direct message on there and copy it to Tom @donkeypong also. He's helping a lot of writers these days. When you post, let us know, and we'll try to get you some votes early on.

Thanks a lot for your feedback!
I thought about remaking an introducemyself post but wasn't sure if it's the right thing to do. Now I now. I'll entirely reedit it and make it better. :D
As for the Slack, I've read about it in an article and wanted to enter, but I can't apply for it. I've been trying from yesterday. I've tried by clicking on "Join our slack" under the menu button and says it's under maintenance.
Thanks again and I'll get back to you when I'll have my introduceyourself post ready.

I've posted a new version of introduceyourself: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@diana.catherine/new-introduceyourself-post-and-info-about-me-i-still-think-the-founders-are-geniuses. Hope it's better now. Even if some crazy fellow started being a troll... :D

Hey, Richard! Thanks for that enlightening post. I joined Steemit just yesterday. I must say, at first the whole thing overwhelmed me. SO MANY QUESTIONS. I didn't even know how cryptocurrency worked. Not sure I understand it a 100% still. Hehe!

But it was posts like these, that helped me get a sense of the power of Steemit. And I am fascinated. Thank you for the rewards that you are giving out. It is really inspiring :)

As for who I am, I made an #introduceyourself post yesterday, link: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@sauravrungta/how-i-met-steemit-hi-i-am-saurav-and-we-are-going-to-do-wonderful-things-here

I could really use some money at this point of my life where I'm trying out a few different things. Thank you once again! :)

Thank you for this opportunity and your willingness to share.
It's interesting that the timing of voting makes such a difference. Thus far, I have only submitted one post but I have voted on quite a few and even commented on a few. I don't usually comment unless I actually have something to say or just want to encourage the writer.
For this comment the purpose is to say thank you and also to meet the requirements for possible reward as my wallet is very, very skinny.
So, again, thank you.

Thanks for the curation advice; I didn't realize that the sooner you voted you increased your shared rewards. Anyway, I'm a longtime Redditor and got the crypto decentralization bug relatively recently and I still find myself splitting time b/w Reddit and this but if I had some more Steem Power I would Power Up and stop wasting my time over on Reddit! /shamefulpromotion

Hi Richard !

I just stumbled across this amazing platform and its tokens 3 days ago. I consider myself pretty interested in everything crypto related. I still struggle to understand all of its functionality and am still reading into it. I love the fact that even sharing fortunes, like you do, can earn you money in return.
I SIMPLY LOVE IT !
It often seems to me that i still did not grasp how revolutionary this is.
So far i have written 2 articles, but am not sure what makes them go rather undetected. ( aside from my english and grammar i guess ;) )
I recieved some upvotes on this thread : https://steemit.com/money/@supermeatboy/guide-get-free-massive-legit-youtube-traffic and am really thrilled to see where this will go.

In case you feel i should be getting one of your rewards, i will use that to get a better understanding of the system, untill iam able to promote it to others.... Which could turn into more upvotes for you ;) tehehe

I am a socal caretaker and make some beermoney on the net, yet i did not find out on what i would create more content. Iam still playing around alot here.

Thanks for considering and reading !
Have a lovely day ya´ll !

Hi Richard,

I love this post. As a new Steemit user I'm attempting to navigate my way through this complex entanglement of blogs and it's pretty tricky.

Here's my introduction post (short but sweet, I assure you). I can also assure you I will use the $20 to power up my account, because at the moment I definitely can't afford to myself (proof: I wrote a post recently about how to travel when you have no money... on account of the fact I have no money!).

Anyway, thanks for the offer.

Rachel

Hi Richard! That is very generous of you to do such a thing! I am new to this whole idea, and have written one post about what I think. Nonetheless, I just think it's brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Everything I do, I do to help others, and I think with the vast capabilities of Steem, I can help out a wider group of people. Thanks - Dave.

Thank you for the instructions, there is a lot of information currently being posted; which I hope I'm starting to absorb. I have made several posts but not really achieved the exposure I have seen with other people's posts. Whilst this could be due to content, I will leave for the steemers to decide!! I was also confused regarding the tags and voting "strategies". But it's all very clear now!! Yet again, another revalation and revaluation!! I look forward to more educating in the near future

Hi Richard, I joined steemit last night so I'm pretty sure I'm a noob right now but I'm getting the hang of it. I've been mining bitcoin for years but switched to ethereum mining for 2016, so I'm not new to the cryptocurrency side of it. This was the first good explanation I've seen of the voting system so thanks a lot for posting. I guess I voted too soon but I'll take your advice in the future...

Keep doin what your doing! My vote is still worth nothing but im trying to get enough steem power to help reward people!

Wow....I have definitely been upvoting a bit too early on some of these. Thanks for the wonderful advice. Truly generous to the ignorant.

You know you were trolling the "New" section and doing some mad title-based upvoting...just like I was!

Hello! I just started writing articles and posting on Steemit yesterday. Thank you for thw the article, btw. Here is a link to my introduceyourself page: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@tee-em/new-to-steemit-and-kind-of-addicted-already

hi im nabilov from canada i just heard of steemit from a friend that was bannned from adsense , just like me , i love everything about steemit , down down facebook lol , i work in a call centre im married and have 2 kids , thanks in advance for the steem

Thanks to everyone who participated. Please stay involved with Steemit. I wish I could give away more. Maybe next time!

Here is proof that I have sent the promised rewards (+ a little more) to ten worthy commenters:

https://postimg.org/image/nhqrqp435/

Very thanks, Richard. I´ve just converted your fantastic gift to Steem. As it turns available, I will convert it to Steem Power as you suggested.

Thank you again so much for doing this! :)

Not my luck maybe. Hopefully u will make another one in future 😊

@steemship thank you so much for the contribution, have used it to power up :)

This was great advice.. I attempted a few posts from what I understood about it, but this was a lot better!

Also money bags is the only slots I'd play when I went to casinos.. I was a poker/blackjack dealer for awhile so usually just stick to hold em when I go :D

Hey Richard! Great post and thanks for the info. Relatively new to the crypto scene and very new to Steem.it... but definitely want to up my Steem power... whatever that is. I'm a DAO hack surviver, help a brother out ;-)

Haha, bookmarked!

However can you explain this further, I thought the author always got 50%

Voters who vote at 30 minutes or later are sharing 0% with the author.

CG

Thanks for spotting that and sorry if it was less than clear. I meant that after 30 minutes, voters are not forfeiting any of the voting rewards to the author. Yes, the author still gets the author rewards, which are 50% of the overall total. I was talking only about the voting portion of the curation rewards.

FIRST!

hahah, i crack myself up.

Generous of you.

New to Steemit, long time fan of crypto. Great post :)

Making Money by Voting

Honestly, you will NOT make good money from voting unless you follow these three guidelines.

Steemit not pay money or SteemDollars by Voting. Curration reward is Steem Power

Steem Power IS money. In fact, it's better than most money...

I agree, Steem Power (SP) is better than money, but in the long term. The SP is a long term investment. You can not buy food with the SP now!

nice

Downvoted for this irresponsible pumping nonsense:

First of all, if you have any money that you don’t need to spend for necessities in the next few months, you cannot afford NOT to Power Up. I’ve heard people say that they can’t afford to do it, but you cannot afford NOT to Power Up. This opportunity for real growth with Steemit is just too great right now.

thanks you are doing something back for the comunity

For any of you waiting for your $20 giveaways, they are coming soon. Transfers are disabled right now in the wallet (they are doing security enhancements to the site), but once I have access to my funds again, I will pay out the top 10 comments! -Richard

Hi mate ,
When the winner will be announce ?
I believe all of us are quite interested :P .

Hi Richard! Thank you for explanation and help me a lot.

Hi, Richard.
I´m from Brazil.
I´m really new in this crypto market, and your posts are, by far, the most usefull ones I found on Steemit to learn how to use this platform do earn some money and build something here. Understanding the system dynamics will allow me and others to really contribute to the community, producing value to it with posts that people really like. I´m still figuring out how I can use this incredible platform to improve my business. Until then, upvoting posts as you teached us seems to be the logic way.

VERY thanks for your effords to help us and Steemit to grow up strong.

Hey Richard. This is a follow up comment.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Really GRATEFUL to receive the $22 which I will be using to power up my Steem Power. You don't know what this means to me! You've made me one happy person today :) :)
thankyou

i could use any help that is available . i would greatly appreciate any traffic on my post
https://steemit.com/steemit/@bdavid/why-i-m-trying-to-make-steemit-work-for-me
thank you for any support

Thanks Richard! Got $20 from you and now I have been able to build more content, get exposure and become more confident in the platform. I've not forgotten how it felt to receive the gift so I've sent a payment of $28 to a new user, carrying on the cycle :)
