What should I do help this platform?steemCreated with Sketch.

Hi Steemers!

So, I just found out that my votes are being countered due to some "experiment," because I'm a "whale;" a small one, but, albeit, a whale. I did not get the "memo," not sure if there even was one, but I am a bit lost as to what is really happening. I tried contacting @smooth, but he is not responding.

I really like this place and I want it to grow and become something really special. The price drop really took the morale out of this place. Now, the price seems to have recovered, but I am not exactly sure for what reason. To me it appears to be artificial, but time will tell. However, I still want to take advantage of the inertia this price recovery has created or will create and see how we could work together to improve this place.

So, my question to the gang is: what can I do to help make this place become "the place to be?"

I am open to all suggestions from everyone.

Thank you!

Thanks for your question. I'm here since September 2016 and I have suffered many emotional ups and downs. The best advice I can give you is:
BE PATIENT.
Steemit will come to big success, but it will take a lot of time.
The "experiment" is to eliminate voting power of the whales as to strenghten the influence of the minnows.
So if you don't want to be considered as a whale anymore you could split your SP into several accounts :-)

And bye the way: Thank you very much for your support!!

Now we're talking. Please tell me how to do this. Thank you. :)

There are many people here who have several accounts. The most of the additional accounts are existing for certain reasons, e.g. voting bots. The more sophisticated users have scripts running which interact with all actions on the blockchain. But this is not my experience. I have finished programming about 25 years ago. With blockchain operations it is possible to transfer steem power (which is normally bound) to the steem power of other accounts. But I don't know exactly how this works.
The blockchain operation can be seen in the steemd.com log :

Hi!

I am not really sure how to read this list. Could you elaborate a bit.

You simply have to open //steemd.com/@tamim . There you can see all interactions on your account.

Ah, I see. Thank you, @freiheit50!

you can vote just not with 100% of too much or you will be countered. prolly around 18-19% max equals to your 100% before experiment. ask @smooth how much is allright for his bot to not trigger :)

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

I think he has me at 15% and above. Thank you, @kingscrown for your reply!

No problem man, thanks for your support on my posts! So yeah stick to 15% and you will have same fun as always :)

Yes, having fun. That's the key!

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Hi, just saw this.

I guess you've already chatted with @smooth and found a solution, thanks you two. Also others have helped a lot in this post. Thank them all.

It's my fault that didn't send you a message. Sorry about that. By seeing that you have no post/comment recently but voting actively, I thought you're not around but only have a bot voting for you. It may be correct at a time, but not always. Also things changed a lot after a few days. My apologize.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask. I'm reachable on steemit.chat, not always online though.

I feel your passion and positive.

Wish you all the best.

Thank you for this reply! I will talk to you more on steemit.chat.

You can give your steem to me. I joke. Thank you for your support of my transmissions. This platform is one of the greatest things about your planet.

It took me a bit of thinking to understand your comment. LOL. Thank you for the laugh. :)

It is neat to see my vote there boosting your post by about 25¢ lol, and that is without full power.

I took a week off to protest how a lot of this whole mess was handled, I am not here for just the money like many people and have always tried to help people on here, and put out good content. My first post in a week was today.

Have a good weekend.

Thank you! I agree with you, I have learnt from a lot of your content.

Thanks, that is really good to know!

@hanshotfirst -- look, my stuff helps people! I love it.

Got your back!

I need all the help I can get LOL. That's why I try and put out good content always, and take a stand, when I need to, it is always to help others.

Thank you.

:)

My opinion is the exact same and that is why I also put my time and money where my mouth is and went on #SteemitStrike for a week, not posting.

I walked away from a week of huge paying posts, as you will notice if you look down my blog page now.

My opinion then, as now, and I have written it several times since coming back y-day --- this was rolled out VERY very poorly, with no notice and was deployed very very sloppy not using any best practices or communications.

Just some of the top 1% in life, doing what they want and also not handling themselves very well at times.

I'm sure someone smarter than I will come along to give you some good advice. In the meantime, I want to thank you for how much you have supported creative people in this community. You have a great reputation for helping "the little guy". There are a lot of people who continue to contribute to the platform because you have encouraged them.

I'm sorry but I'm not a whale so I don't have any idea how to navigate this "experiment". I liked the idea when it seemed like participation would be voluntary. But now that it is being forced with down votes, I no longer truly understand its purpose and am not sure how the results can be accurately measured.

Oh man, this is such a sweet comment. Thank you. This is the first feedback I'm getting with respect to my voting behaviour.

I noticed when I voted for blogs that immediately their rewards dropped after it increased. So, I was baffled as to what I was doing wrong.

Again, thank you for the kind comment.

Timcliff posted about this a few times. Personally I don't think anyone should be forced to change their votes and I think the flags are way too negative, but if you need to in order to avoid the content creators being down voted, it looks like Timcliff advised onceuponatime (who has similar SP to you) to vote at 80%. Once again, I don't know very much about this, but I figured I could give you a place to start until someone who knows more comes along. Perhaps @onceuponatime could give you a more informed opinion.

https://steemit.com/experiment/@timcliff/the-whale-no-vote-experiment-whale-participation-data

Thank you for this!

My pleasure! It's the least I could do considering all you have done for people.

:)

Hey @tamim - here is another post to help explain what is going on :)
https://steemit.com/steem/@timcliff/the-whale-voting-experiment-explained-including-downvotes-from-abit

You are free to do as you would like with your voting power, but my personal recommendation is that you 'play along' with the experiment. Out of everything that has been done around here since I joined back in July, this has been by far the biggest moral boost to the "regular users" of the platform - to actually see that their SP has some influence.

What I have heard is that if you can keep your votes (including any voting trails that may possibly be following you) under 800 MV worth of SP, that you shouldn't be subject to any downvotes (at least due to the experiment).

Hope this helps! Thanks for your great attitude towards making the platform better :)

So, my question to the gang is: what can I do to help make this place become "the place to be?"

  1. Help promote the platform
  2. Periodically visit the #help channel in Steemit.chat to see if there are any users that you can help answer questions for
  3. If you have developer skills and are interested in working on code changes to the UI, let me know ;)

I agree. I feel the morale boost right through the screen. I like this. Do you until when this experiment is meant to last?

I don't. It is a question for @abit.

I suspect (this is just my own opinion/theory) that if it is successful (which it seems to be) then there will be some discussion on how to make it more of a long-term thing in a way that is fair to the large stake-holders and does not incentivize them to split their SP into multiple little accounts.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

I think it is successful. And, I am on board. I believe that more and more should be done to level the playing field, this way the little guy has a chance to also compete. It's bummer when he has to shovel snow with his bare hands. Lets give him a shovel! The big guy still has his snowblower. :)

You did nothing wrong. You just did what you have always been doing. You tried to reward and encourage content that is good for the platform. We all you a debt of gratitude for taking the time to do that! Until someone wiser comes along, I do think there was a post about whales adjusting their voting power so it would not trigger a down vote bot. I may be wrong but I will look for it.

Thank you for the encouraging words. :)

You have a great attitude. Thank you for caring about making Steemit better and rewarding good content! This "experiment" has its pros and cons, but hopefully they have learned what they are going to learn and will move on. We probably need a better coded solution (flatter rewards curve), which would help alleviate the inequality. Hopefully, we'll get to that point soon rather than having it forced on us by the voting. Let's keep working to make Steemit better for everyone.

I am getting excited for this whole HF17. Delegating my votingpower will help grow the community bigger and bigger, at least, a tiny bit, considering I am not a big whale. More eyes will help to catch better content and reward it. So, yeah, this HF17 should help a bit.

How about running or sponsoring some kind of contest to encourage community engagement?

Hi!

This is a similar comment to the one made by @sykochica.

I am still getting familiar with STEEMit. So, this will take some time, and, perhaps, thereafter, I would be in a better position to understanding how to engage the community.

Thank you for your comment. I will keep this in mind.

I'm just up later than I should be, decided to come back here and go over the comments in your post.

If you want to run a contest with me --- to help out under the things you are able to do-- we can discuss that.

You see my content and ideas, so I am sure we can do something. I ran a contest last month and have artwork done up and saved for all my series' that I do, we can figure something out @tamim.

I always have ideas, just not enough Steem lol

Have a nice week my man.

I have few things in mind, after reading the comments on this blog post. Now, I have to plan the execution.

Amen!

Liberty here we come lol

Thanks for all you do for the community.

Hi @tamim. I didn't see your chat message right away but I have replied to you there, happy to chat more.

Thank you @smooth. I have replied. I'm glad to make your acquaintance, albeit under weird circumstances. You seem very level headed.

You've definitely been a great asset here since you came on board. I've been following, even if quiet. (I tend to do that.) Having a positive, helpful attitude alone really goes a long way on here.

I really don't want to get too in depth on the 'experiment' (being rather talked out about it myself at this stage) but I did try to give some idea as to what was going on with it (with the best of my knowledge) in [this post] along with various pros, cons and strategies to use while it continues. I'd seen a post defining a 'whale' as 384,000 SP or more and while I can't give an exact percentage, those who reduced their vote percentage low enough to the level of a 'dolphin' wasn't supposed to be flagged.

An idea you might try that the flags really can't touch would be some sort of contest with a Steem or SBD prize. Now I absolutely understand this requires taking money directly out of your pocket, so this isn't meant as any force. But stirring up something engaging, positive and fun (akin to papa-peppers [meme contest] or ones run by @fibra59 can really go a long way in my eyes as far as the community itself is concerned.

I don't know if it's something you'd ever want to do, but you're welcome to join as a featured guest on one of our @steemittalk podcats one of these weeks. We try to just have a good time on those and feature cool steemit content and users there.

Hmmm...this is an interesting idea! Thank you, @sykochica. :)

I guess once the whole calculus of how rewards are resolved settles, this idea of yours would really help this place grow at a micro level by creating sub-communities within this larger community.

Absolutely.

It's tough right being able to provide rewards by your voting with the expectation of it being flagged back down. So most of my mind goes into ways to 'motivate' outside of the voting system. The down side of this is that it'd take funds outside of a vote and I don't really like the idea of telling anyone what to do with their money.

Now, this could go well outside of memes. Offering a reward to onboard somebody. Offer a reward to advertise somewhere, or to try to find a great person with a decent following but not quite 'there yet' to bring on board. In the past, there was a positivity project that was run to try and help things 'lighten up' (which unfortunately ran via resteems and upvotes.)

Idk, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head that doesn't require offering funds directly. Maybe something like trying to accumulate donations from members to then distribute to a person that seems to be most 'showing steemit values.' (However that would be defined, lol.)

Anyway, I'm exhausted and wanna try to get a little more writing done. In the end, there is nothing wrong with just continuing to do what you do naturally (since it's already have good impact, even with the counterflags.)

Thank you, and thank you for the encouraging words. Rest well!

Well some of us are migrating to Golos to post long form content (though still use steemit for short/throwaway content, and we'd love if if you came as a whale to upvote content!

Here is the english section of Golos:
https://golos.io/trending/en

Golos is pretty cheap at the moment, so you don't need much of an investment to become a whale:

https://bittrex.com/Market/Index?MarketName=BTC-GOLOS

It is at the early adoption stage that Steem was last May.

Hi!

I can't read Cyrillic script.

I'm barely a sizable minnow, but if my input carries any weight, I'd say, be the best you, that you can be and don't get involved in anything that looks like a war, or experiment. It'll work itself out, I think. The flaws in the system and the experiment are becoming apparent at this point. Too many people have tried to engage with this and quit. This kind of thing needs to be tested out now so this doesn't have to happen in an even less controlled circumstance. A stitch in time, I think. That's my fraction of a steem.

The thing is that when the minute there are two people, the tug of war starts. So, these kind of things need to come to pass. I stay away from the wars. But, I still want to help this place grow.

Doing it in a peaceful manner, that's the least one can do.

Thank you for your input, @lifeworship!

That was awesome. Thank you for sharing!

That is The Venture Bros. The first two seasons are fantastic, not to be missed.

ideas: create good content? support good content? share content? tell others about steemit! :)

another thought* maybe you could lower your voting power and it wouldn't get counteracted as well?

Thank you!

Hey @tamim, this is from a few days ago:

And of course welcome to join us all on http://steemspeak.com discord.

Have a blessed day & enjoy the price rise :)

Thank you for this.

your welcome!

You voted for my suggestion.
price in this stage is not impprtant, in my opinion.
What do you think about my suggestion?
https://steemit.com/steemit/@slowwalker/some-thougths-on-future-steps-of-steemit-steem-2017316t211117543z
sorry for my poor English

I really like the idea. It is futuristic.

Yes! Thank you.

Me too

Nice to read about a whale who cares . Good thread to read through.

Thank you. The more I read and get educated about this platform, the more it seems that the little guys is fending for themselves. I am beginning to like this initiative to make STEEMit more accessible to all, and not just whales and those who have whale friends.

This would be the ideal world . Right ? :)
I wrote an approachable summery, a guide helping newcomers to understand. Simple and positive : https://steemit.com/welcome/@mammasitta/welcome-to-steemit-quick-start-guide-for-new-members

As you can see , my comment was down voted by some bot again as many of my posts but thank you for your vote @tamim

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

^see, in this case you did not get it.

Yeah, it is my voting power that is attracting the bots, as far as our interaction is concerned, at least. I have to limit it.

You should have a chat with @onceuponatime He knows how to use voting power. I had no idea that you had that much hahaha. Be very careful with it. It's so valuable for all of us.

I just read your blog post! That was awesome, short and to the point.

Much appreciated! Nice to meet you. Lets test it again if I get another flag.

You got another flag! :p

Just being here, engaged, caring, as you are. Thank you for this. There's nothing wrong with whales having the power they do, the problem is when their votes are careless or automated. I disagree with the suggestion to split your power between accounts. If the whales doing the experiment see this they will continue to down vote their votes.

They should just implement vote negating if that's what @smooth and @abit really want.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Hi @beanz!

Oh ok, so that is what was meant by that list posted by one Steemian!

I think after the price drop and now the price rise, one cannot be more beat up. I thought I would lose everything. But, at least things seem a bit more brighter. I think I will delegate my votes to see how it goes. Im sure that I won't make as much as before, but as long as we have an engaging community, then we all win.

It would be kind of harsh to only gain and not share those gains with anyone else. :)

Honestly as unfortunate as some folks think it is, I think we just gotta do some good old fashioned work. Methinks good content can still save the day. Full Steem ahead!

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

This, I agree with.
Good content is the key.

The more volume of users that pass by this place the better it would become. But, these users will not all be content creators. We need spectators, and we need to keep these spectators once we get them. So, they also need to be rewarded. Therefore, I am very happy for the commenter's rewards feature. This should encourage a lot more interaction.

I think that change is going to be awesome for the platform... especially if caring people like you take the time to reward people (including commenters) for their contribution to the platform.

Definitely will agree on incentives for participation. Articles aren't as fun to write if nobody else has any feedback or ideas to contribute and those that do should feel properly rewarded.

Hey there, @tamim! Firstly, thank you so, so much for your support! You are super!
As far as how do to navigate around the flags, you will most likely have to adjust your voting weight to act as a dolphin instead of a whale. I see that @smooth has contacted you back, so hopefully things will get figured out in a way that will allow you to keep supporting your favorite content. :)

Cheers, buddy! Stay awesome.

Thank you for you uplifting comment! I am in contact with @smooth now. :)

Perfect! :)

Find new people to upvote, follow, and resteem. Create a series of contests to foster interaction. Give Steem to @goodguygreg and tell me how to design a bot so he can counter-vote the flag-spam. It's really up to you.

Yes, finding new people to upvote. I have realized that after the HF17 I will delegate my votingpower, even if I don't make anything out of it. This should help at least on my part.

Instead of delegating votes and using bots, read articles and upvote judiciously. There is no obligation to upvote.

Good point. This is something that I am beginning appreciate more and more. I thought of this at the beginning, but now I understand it more.

Hello Friend ... Are you okay ... Unfortunately I did not have the means of communication to check on you ... I hope you are fine .. I hope you write the next post

I get hit by @smooth for just about every post I do, its all automated. Its nice to know that some whales actually look at the things they vote on. Thank you!

Hello my friend . I was you just why it's not written 18 days post? . I am happy to publish and benefited from it. About what you can do. You will know what is working well and will be a good working

Thank you for your message. I hope you are doing well!

I'm fine . And hope you are fine. And I'm happy to talk to you

I noticed this as well and this is only my second day here. Both my posts were downvoted or whatever by this smooth person you were talking about. I thought i might have did something wrong. That's really obnoxious that someone would go out of there way to stop someone from getting upvoted for whatever personal gain or misguided beliefs they may have.

Please read this post https://steemit.com/steem/@timcliff/the-whale-voting-experiment-explained-including-downvotes-from-abit
There is an experiment going on to improve the platform. Both of of your post would have probably yield less than 5 cents a week ago but because of this experiment new users are able to earn at least some rewards. Before the experiment 1% of users controlled 99% of the reward allocation, the downvote thing is so far the best thing the community found to make the platform more fair. Smooth is auto downvoting thousands of posts not just yours https://steemd.com/@smooth

Thank you for giving me this information, I really appreciate it. It was very informative and gave me an insight into the community and how they are attempting to make it better. I apologize for jumping to conclusions and thank you for not attacking me for it and providing answers.

No worries!

P.S. The downvotes of your upvotes by @smooth seem to be generated automatically, because happening immediatlely:

I took me bit of time to know exactly what is going on. But, yeah, it is automatic.

Greetings @tamim.

Thank you for posing this query. When one is appreciative of an organisation...a group...a person....one desires to give in return. It appears that is what you do and many have responded to it.

Not really sure there is a pat answer as it will be different for everyone. However it appears your idea of upvoting content worthy of your admiration is a very welcome contribution. Thank you as well for investing in Steemit.....a contribution not everyone can make......it is very much appreciated.

bleujay was delighted to see your upvote and even though it was down-voted.......the thought remained of your desire to encouage a content provider. Is that not a contribution. It would appear you are bringing value to Steemit in a way unique to yourself....your person. What more could Steemians require.......

Wishing you all the best. Cheers.

Thank you @bluejay!

This is an encouraging comment. :)

Stay well!

nested :

I write here instead

Reg your comment

you got another flag

Haha , Its kind of funny. That flagging monster bot really loves me lol

yes, that nested shiz.

My response to your recent comment:

you wrote:

"You should have a chat with @onceuponatime He knows how to use voting power. I had no idea that you had that much hahaha. Be very careful with it. It's so valuable for all of us."

My response:

Sorry, if you could kindly elaborate a bit. Why should I be careful and how is it valuable for all?

I had a talk with @smooth over steemit.chat. So, I will be use less of my voting power. I want everyone else to make the most of their voting power.

My apology to be short with my response but it's very late in Vienna
I meant to say that it's good to choose how much percentage of your voting power you use if you upvote posts . Up to 50% I think is ok.

I have to use 14%. Otherwise, the downvote bot will be on my ass. :)

Vienne, eh? Nice!

Good to see you are still out there!

nice question. :) hope you have got satisfying answers and no "fight" will come of it ;) We don't need more fights :)

Hi tamim, to nice to see a whale sounding so human. i will look for my own suggestions and present them here. Nice to meet you. I don't know much when it comes to the techy or crypto aspects but i will find some suggestions to leave here still and especially after having read all the comments here!

I support.

I appreciate this post. Thank you for your candor. rEsteemed and followed.
I suggest you do as you will ; ) or just keep doing what you're doing.
Your status as a whale should not factor in IMHO.
Imgur

I hear you! I decided to ask because as a "whale" (not that i give it much importance), my role has been given to me by default. But, yeah, I hear you, just do me. :)

Thank you for the encouraging words. :)

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Hi tamim, nice to meet you! You are right in what you say. To me in particular you voted me, I do not know whether manually or with the cervantes bot. And I received the flag of smooth. I talked to him and he told me you were a mini whale, and that served to balance things. I think the experiment is good but what I do not understand is why take away my post visibility, My post (https://steemit.com/spanish/@tincho/mi-mama-se-creo-una-cuenta-en-steemit) did not make more than $ 3.8. Not even I was in the trending of Spanish.
My advice is to continue doing what is good for you on this platform. Do what you enjoy the most.
Sorry for my English, but it's not my original language

I will have to figure out a perfect way to make sure my voting power is the same. One thing that @smooth said to me is that my votes will not be a loss to the author. Either way, we should be good. So, ignore the downvote.

Good luck my friend! And thanks for appreciating my post!

Thanks for all your support, @tamin ! I read some useful tips on the comments before, so I have just a small suggestions: follow the tip that make you feel better and do it. Every kind of support to this cozy community will be appreciated, believe me ^_^

Yes, this "cozy community!"

I feel like I am more engaged then ever. This "experiment" in my opinion has really helped to get people talking. Which is good. I feel that before people were only worried about making money, whether as an author or a curator. At least that was the case with me. Now, we are talking to each other as a community in trying to better this place.

I guess a bravo goes out to @smooth and his team, or the team he belongs to, not sure which one it is.

yes, @tamin , I think you're getting the point. This "esperiment" (in my own opinion) helped people to think how important is the "engament". As you wrote, before this "issue", some (not all, sure)people was only focused on making money as a money-machine and yes, it's the first motivation to start posting here. Steemit is not only a way to make some money, it's also a community full of interesting people and I think that now, we can understand that to talk each other, to enjoy the contents, to have fun writing/reading , it's the best way to grow up steemit ^^ My 2 cents ^^

:)
