A cloudy view of STEEM (and people)

in steem •  6 years ago  (edited)

I haven't done one of these for almost a year but was reminded about the wordcloud feature on Steemreports today. You can find the wordcloud tool here.

I thought it would be interesting to compare from 10 months ago and today to see what has changed in my posting language used:

Do you know which one is which? It is actually pretty easy to tell the first from the second along the timeline because once upon a time, I mentioned Steemit as if it was Steem. I made the change more than a year ago but that was still suffering the legacy of the past content and has now well and truly been replaced by STEEM.

If you check someone's wordcloud and they are mentioning Steemit a lot, they likely don't have much of a grasp on what this place actually is and confuse the interface steemit.com with the blockchain itself. Even @ned mentions Steem more than Steemit.

Oh, like me, he also mentions himself a lot but it is because we both sign out with our name at the bottom of the post as at least, Taraz doesn't talk about himself in the third person. Ned might in private.

One thing I do find interesting (a word I use a lot) is that I can see that "community" a word I used to use a lot doesn't appear in today's cloud. I do not know how much information these clouds look at or how far back they reach, but this actually makes sense and it isn't because I think Steem isn't a community. Well, not quite that.

Steem is a platform and the more it is decentralizing over time, the more communities are morphing into existence from the chain. Some time ago I started mentioning communities less as people would argue that it is not a community at all because of such and such.. I disagree, it is but it is a community made up of many sub-group that fall under the Steem umbrella or more accurately, utilize the Steem blockchain together.

All in all though, the word clouds are quite similar and consistent overtime which shows that while I have been pretty active, my general content has remained centered around similar areas. I wonder if a person's mind can appear through these clouds but I do not think that it is that kind of thing. It does however make me wonder what some other people's clouds look like.

Once I started looking through some friends and higher profile accounts I follow and I recognized that they don't look too far back through the data but, it is still a bit of fun.

@abh12345

Asher with engagement, comments, league, Steem is a pretty obvious representation of where he is spending his time on Steem and what he does around the communities

@acidyo

Again, we can see that the original manual curator has Steem, people, users, accounts and blockchain coming up heavily in the posts. Acid also runs a league for football so that appears there also.

@whatsup

And what do you know, Whatsup's mentioning, Steem, people, community and of course, her drama token in herposts also. Seems to be a bit of a trend.

@theycallmedan

Here we go again with Dan, Steem, people, comments, upvote, delegation are high on the appearance lists. Definite trending going on here, if none of these accounts currently appear in Trending itself.

@coruscate

Again, the irrepressible Lea has Steem, people, friends, enjoy high on the list and... guys. With the size of that "Lea", I think she might refer to herself in the third person :*

@anomadsoul

Que?? Well, Steem is there at least, as is people and @blocktrades who Eric does a lot of community work with.

@exyle

Exyle is of course mentioning Steem and witness a fair bit in his wordcloud and by the way, congrats on hitting 200k SP.

These are the only accounts I checked and they came to mind because all of them are quite different in their approach but also, successful within the community. I didn't know what I would find but I did suspect that there was going to be a great deal of overlap between them in two points: They are all STEEM and all PEOPLE orientated accounts. This is something that people might want to consider when they talk about why some are more successful than others as these accounts not only know a great deal about Steem, they also understand that people are important for its future.

Of course, this doesn't represent how they talk about STEEM or PEOPLE but, it does show their focus and if you do follow these accounts, you will find that they are both positive on STEEM and on the PEOPLE of Steem. It is interesting that some want upvotes from large investors in Steem while they bash the platform because they don't get them. Conflicted process.

For the last search I checked in on Bernie who I have known for a couple years but, you might have heard of him as well. And, as we can see, he has by far the most awesome wordcloud and it is obvious he has been advertising his new token very heavily :D

@berniesanders

I think Bernie's cloud is a good way to end this because this is a bit of a shitpost. I should get on with something more important - something to do with PEOPLE and STEEM perhaps.

Add your own wordcloud below if you like. The link once again.

Looks like I need to self-promote more, and mention OCD. :P

yep. I remember hearing some shill from advertising on radio that mention the name 7 times in a 30 second add. I guess that translates as a read too so then if it is a 5 minute read, mention OCD 70 times ;D

Very interesting (a word I also use a lot!), might have to go do this for myself. Aside from the clouds themselves, the Steem/Steemit/Community discussion tends to give me a headache because there seem to be as many distinctions as there are people.

And the borders seem vague and all but impossible to define... given we have a Steem blockchain and a Steem community and a Steemit company and a Steemit front end which means we technically have both a Steem community and a Steemit community...

... which leads to the slippery slope of where common usage intersects with accurate labels (the original use of "Steemit" as the gateway to the "Steem blockchain" seems very "sticky" in people's minds)... a bit like the old days of people going to "Xerox" something, where Xerox became a word meaning "to make copies" while Xerox was actually a company/brand.

But is anyone actually "on Steem?" Or are they merely on any number of condersers that happen to be built on and access the Steem blockchain? Confusing, much?

But I have wandered FAR off topic here... thanks for sharing this cool tool!

=^..^=

Th definition of steem/Steemit etc depends on how the person uses it I think. There are still some who refuse to use any other interface but steemit.com and then wonder why they are missing out on other aspects of the platform :)

Interesting is about curiosity in my opinion and you know what that did to the cat? Well, not really because the actual proverb was Care killed the cat. Quite different really ;)

ROFL
@berniesanders. How can anyone not like that guy.
He gives SHIT. LOL 😝

I think he has been dealing a fair bit of it too.

Yea he hit me with shit the other day
hahaha

Everyone have pattern and use sometimes the same words.

Yep, and over time it is quite easy to recognize writing styles. I use the same words a lot in Finnish because I only have about 100 to choose from :D

If you have a look yours didn't change that much really. Consistency throughout the year. There isn't any negativity that I can see as it is all about communities and the future. I still can't believe it is nearly a year since you posted this last . It just seems like a few months ago.

I still can't believe it is nearly a year since you posted this last .

Yep it is funny. Steem time is not even close to a straight line :D

Well thats interesting ! Steem + People = Steemit Community :D
Have a nice weekend!

Steem Community :P

No no no! See! It is Steemit Community :P Lets fix it :D

you rang? :D

castleftvestingshares :D

I use that one all the time too :D

I think it is great to see the underlying consistency of communication among the community with words such aa curation and engagement. This is what drives us as individuals as we feel part of something larger!

Yep, the people who complain a lot about traction should have a look at what their clouds look like.

Bahahah this post is awesome. Bernie’s literally made me laugh out loud as I stand in the line at Costco. 😂

With the size of that "Lea", I think she might refer to herself in the third person.

I’m so vain. 💁‍♀️ I always sign my posts with my name at the end - but I can see how this looks bad! 😂

It cracked me up too and I hope Shit tokens are going to moon.

I’m so vain.

I know - me met. :P :D

I’m going to pretend to be offended by that... 😂

I didn't think it was a !shit post at all. I kind of loved it and I thought the comparison of the accounts was extremely interesting. :) Loved the People, Community and Steem example used.

Like you I also sign my name at the end of each post, but I guess it didn't show up because I use @ in front, so people can click it if they want to look at the entire blog. It seems friendlier than a gif or picture and while it might look unpolished, I think it is real. I don't want my blog to look or feel commercial.

And a final note: I literally spit coffee on seeing Bernie's word cloud! Love it, great post.

I don't think I have gotten any free shit yet, let's see.

You mean, you don't want to barrydutton it?

It really is awesome.

Maybe I am not allowed to issue

:)

I think their algorithm is heavily weighted towards recent posts. I’ve done two posts in the last two days mentioning inflation and that was enough for the word to be fairly prominent in my wordcloud.

yep, it doesn't seem to look back so far but I had already started writing the post :D It would be interesting to see what kinds of things come up for 'all-time content'

O have tead all of your post... even i have translated it to urdo and hindi language to understand it and to find the purpose and result in your post but i couldn't.

What i get is a strong long english post to expand my english language powers by getting new information..bla bla bla... i do not know how to phrase it...but i enjoyed the english i read

Boted and resteemed

Full upvote and glad you bring this up.
Thanks to you I will make a post with steemians close to me and post about how they are impacting their surroundings.

Believing or not this is a reflection of WHO we are.

It gives an insight into the content at least and it does give an interesting overview of how we might be approaching steem.
