Training the character

The photo in this post was taken on 28th of January 2017, the day before I joined Steem. It is of my wife standing on a ridge that separates two large lakes from each other like a bridge. As we walked along the forest paths pushing our daughter through the snow in a pram, we talked about what we were going to do and, how we were going to survive financially. At the time, Steem was an act of desperation but in time, became a source of inspiration.

Thinking back to the months that led to that day and those that came after doesn't yet come with the golden memories of the past and details are largely a blur. All that really arrives is the pain of struggle and the stress of not having enough resources to cope. Yet, cope we did.

No matter how often it is proven, we continually underestimate our own strength and how capable we are of making it through challenge and adversity. One thing that I am lucky to have experienced in my life is a walk through of where Anne Frank was hidden with her family for two years and the sobering thought that, she was 12. Unable to move during daylight hours, limited food, contained, trapped in fear of discovery yet;

Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy - Anne Frank

We get blinded by our immediate conditions without ever really taking the time to look at the beauty, pay attention to all of the things that our attention is torn away from as life applies its unnatural pressures, like the monetary needs to provide basics for a child to grow happy and healthy.

I think about these things often and I see the beauty in my daughter and I hope that I am able to provide her the opportunities so that she can take the reins of life and build herself into someone who is able to think like this:

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. - Anne Frank

And help her but at the end of the day;

Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands. - Anne Frank

Her life is her own to live and when she will face the inevitable struggles of it, I hope she is able to realise that she is much stronger and capable than society trains us to believe.

We are lucky as a family, we have survived life so far together and we will continue to do so. Tomorrow will be another struggle.

I can’t imagine how anyone can say: ‘I’m weak’, and then remain so. After all, if you know it, why not fight against it, why not try to train your character? - Anne Frank

What I love about Steem is, the opportunity to train.

What a great message! I enjoyed reading this.

It seems like steemit represents a little act of desperation for many of us, at least that's my case. I was looking for something that could allow me to earn some money in a currency more stable than my country's currency and I found steemit. The curious thing is that I had a lot of plans before this and now I see steemit like a real career option and a way of living hahaha. It's like the ridge that separates those two large lakes in the picture. Two different lives separated by discovering this platform

I am glad someone brought this up.

It is a future career option. I don't think it is stable enough now for content producers to rely on. Some devs or witnesses, maybe.

Great post Taraz @Tarazkp
enjoyed reading an article while it was completely about another life..
I don't know why, but I enjoyed your writing and I could really "sonder" ( if you don't know the meaning check a youtube channel "dictionary of obscure sorrows")
here it is :

and feel what you feel...
I hope the bests for you two.. goodluck

Haven't heard of Sonder before :)

Great post, @tarazkp! Wise words that truly inspire others to concentrate on the positive things in life to be able to overcome the difficulties we might encounter in our path. Thank you for sharing your writing.

For me I think society defines "success" only as the gain of money. I was forced into opting Engineering as my profession in which I was really interested. It has really put me into a lot of stress. I think we should looking more into our inside than caring about this stupid soceity.

If you are interested in what you do, the stress isn't harmful, it is empowering.

We manage because we have to.

I can remember living from paycheck to paycheck back in England. Every penny was accounted for and I'd put a weekly budget aside to cover all the big bills as they came in plus possible repairs for cars and household electrics. We kept out of debt and ironically managed better than friends and family on higher incomes because we chose to go without rather than go into debt.

When things started to get to me I'd try to remember that mankind has been around for thousands of years and survived on much less. As long as we have food, water and shelter we can live.

This is a common experience isn't it. Personally, I didn't have great rolemodel parents in this area and I fight it every day.

The amount o crap we think we need to live these days is insane. Check anyone's storage...

Don't remind me; I'm trying to have a clear out at the moment! It still amazes me the money involved in the storage business.

Looks like the very peak of Pispalanharju close to the Lauri Viita museum. It could be Ansiokallio in Tahmela in the southeast part of the ridge, too. That's a damn fine photo that ties into the text very well as the sun represents hope in the midst of the coldness and darkness of your then financial winter.

I am not sure about the name but it is a couple 100 metres down the hill from Näkötorni. We had some Munkki too of course ;)

It was a rally strange sunset, golden and the water below is frozen over but, had very little snow on it. Fitting for the moment definitely.

Ok. So you walked down from Näkötorni. Towards the south? There are places like that near the road where you can see Pyhäjärvi. You were not far from Ansiokallio. But it's on the other side of the road and to the west. On the way there, you will pass a dozen or so houses.

Frozen over lakes with no snow on the are the best. Particularly if there is a little water over the ice, they act as giant mirrors like still water. It is an unusual sight in winter time. With the low sun and possibly ice and snow reflecting the sunlight such conditions definitely present some great photo ops.

Toward Varala through the trees about here:

Ansiokallio is just north of Varala near Ansiokatu.

Beautiful. Life offers everyone the chance to grow; to evolve into a better person; and to love.
Your daughter chose a lovely family to be born into. I'm sure she will grow up to be a wonderful person.

I'm sure she will grow up to be a wonderful person.

I am really hoping she has the opportunity to.

We are lucky as a family, we have survived life so far together and we will continue to do so. Tomorrow will be another struggle.

Amen. Though you won't just be surviving, we'll see you guys thrive going forward

Have you seen 'Castaway' ? Steem for me is that last package he never opened to see what is inside.

Hi Taraz. Looking back at that photo now the day before you joined Steem you had no idea what lay ahead and how your life was going to change overnight. Joining Steem is a commitment like no other, it sucks all your time and energy and it is not for everyone.I am so grateful you joined otherwise who else would have mentored me.

Don't call me your mentor, too much responsibility :D

It definitely isn't a place for everyone but it isn't the place that is the issue, it is the everyone...

Agree with you with the everyone bit. Pity that it is a cross section of real life.

"We are lucky as a family, we have survived life so far together and we will continue to do so. Tomorrow will be another struggle".

That is it👏👏..you are really a strong father....Hard times makes us stronger...Never give up...God gat your family.

There's a lot of wisdom there. Particularly for one so young.
I heard they recently recovered some of her diary that had been redacted. Some naughty, raunchy teenager stuff, unbecoming of the paragon of innocent virtue she was turned into.

I have a feeling that the words were polished after but in my view, it means little as long as it activates me. I would assume that she was a smart enough girl that she inspired those around her. Gotta say tat the house was a pretty confronting experience.

She was a teenager trapped in an attic with family for two years. I am sure she wrote a lot more :)

Hi @tarazkp! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! The post has been beautifully written and the quotes from Anne Frank are like gems of wisdom.

I agree with you that in trying times we do tend to forget to look at the positive aspects of our lives and find it very easy to stay stuck with what's not working! If only we could learn to appreciate the good in our lives and start having gratitude for that, we could draw a lot of positive energy from there and then we can use that energy to drive some positive changes into our lives.

My best wishes to you and your family! Thanks!

Gratitude is a very important part of not only appreciating what you have but building the strength on it to get through trying times.

Dead people receive more flowers than the living ones because regret is stronger than gratitude. - Anne Frank

Wow, nice post that seem to make me reflect on a lot going around me, the pressure after schooling in the university, the challenges i went through during my stay in the university and many more. It felt like life kept throwing a lot of bricks on me, my tomorrow looked bleak and blur, but i learnt or per se discovered something, your deepest struggle brings out the best out of you and this one thing stood out..YOU CANNOT CONQUER WHAT YOU ARE UNWILLING TO CONFRONT..

It will always end well if only we can keep trying.
@tarazkp God bless you more and more and turn your stress into rest.

I am a lucky person when I can read these messages and fill with positive ideas to face the day to day. What a life so hard Anne Frank and how many messages of optimism bequeathed us.
Steemit has been my lifeline in this harsh reality that we live here. But at some point this will be gone and I can say that we kept on having criteria to look for solutions to the crisis and faith in a better future, clinging as a family.

Family sure does give us the strength and hope to battle on

What I like about Steem is that it humbles me. The fact that I don't know crap and have to struggle to learn. It gives me a drive that has to be overcome.

The fact that I don't know crap and have to struggle to learn. It gives me a drive that has to be overcome.

It makes me feel stupid enough, often enough it has the same effect. Forces thinking in new areas.

It's either that or go along to be one of the group. I have never been one to follow for the sake of getting along. It does put you as an outsider with its drawbacks. But it has worked for me over the years provided that you learn to master the trade

Anne Frank was a must study many years ago for me. The lessons to learn from that little girl aludes most adults. Her plight still goes on to this day.

Her plight still goes on to this day.

This is the crazy thing...

The day after we visited the house, my wofe's suitcase was stolen and we lost all of her belongings and the souvenir books we had stamped. When we listed them in the stolen items with the police in Amsterdam, I said, well, we could have lost a lot more, we are lucky.

In the grand scheme of things yes you are. We do not look at things in that manner but through the bubble we have created around ourselves.

I have seen so much that I know for a fact that things good be so much worse of. I do not have much in comparison to some. But to others I am so wealthy beyond their comprehension.
Everything is relevant to something or someone else and can look good or bad depending on where you are observing it from.

Another wonderfully inspirational peace mate.
