Pissing Away Hard Earned Steem Power...WHY???????

in steem •  7 years ago

Is everyone feeling a little better about the steem ecosystem?

It is amazing how the sentiment about the prospect of this blockchain changes when the price goes from $.85 to $3.70. By the way, the truth is the outlook has not changed one bit since last month. Price action in no way reflects what is taking place on the blockchain. All the development that is in the works today was going last month. Try to remember this through each dip and pullback.

Steem Power is difficult to acquire. There is no doubt about it. It requires time, effort, and consistency. One has to comment (a ton), upvote, post, and interact. Even trying to short-cut by buying Steem Power is tough since we all know how difficult it is to earn some extra money in the bankster controlled, fiat based world.

If you are new, do not worry about what I am going to explain at this time. Everyone does what you are doing. However, keep this in mind as your SP increases.

When I first started, I not only zapped all my voting power, I also spent my bandwidth twice in the first week (if anyone else used up their bandwidth, please write it in the comments...so far I am the only one I found). Twice I was put in time out because I got a bandwidth error.

Before going any further, for some of the newer people, I will explain the voting system.

Each of us is allocated ten 100% votes a day. What I mean by that is it takes 2.4 hours for a vote to "recharge" the voting power. Hence, we basically have 10 in a 24 hour period.

If you go to steemnow.com, enter your username in the upper right, you will see what your voting power is at. Using the ten votes will move you down to 80%. This is because each 100% voting weight is worth 2% of your total voting power. So, for sake of an example, if I am at 100% voting power and I vote 10 times in the next minute, my VP will be 80%. If I come back at this time tomorrow, I will be back to 100%.

Now for those who have at least 500 SP on Steemit or those who use busy.org, you have the vote slider bar which allows you to alter the voting weight and vote at less than 100%. Therefore, keeping it linear, if we vote at 10% per vote, we now have 100 votes in a 24 hour period instead of 10. Obviously, each vote is worth less but we get more of them.

Yesterday I wrote that Steem Power is Voting Power. In fact, if you have, I will be conservative, at least 5,000 SP, in a couple years you will not have to worry about finances. STEEM is going to provide very well for you. Hence, I simply take the approach we all should look to increase our SP so that our VP is more powerful. This is at the heart of sharing is caring.

So why do people insist on pissing away their Steem Power?

Perhaps I should explain what I mean using myself as an example.

At present my vote is worth roughly $4.11 at 90% voting power. That means, fully loaded, my votes are worth around $4.50 (I love the appreciation in STEEM price...sending the dollar amount through the roof).

As most of you are aware, @fulltimegeek delegated me 10K SP a while back to increase my voting power to help others. His one rule is that he does not want to see the VP at 100%. His view is simply if one is not going to use it, he or she will lose it.

However, one thing that is not talked about is going to the other end of the spectrum. I do not think it is @fulltimegeek's intention for me to have my VP at 10% either. If I did this, I would be pissing away his SP.

Let's see what that would look like:

Notice what happened to the payout when I took my voting power down to 10%. My vote is no longer worth $4.11 but, rather, 45 cents. Wow, that is a big difference.

At present, @fulltimegeek's delegation makes up tad bit more than half of my voting power (51%). If I run my account down to the 10% level, I waste 9,000 SP that he delegated to me. 51% of my 45 cent vote is roughly 23 cents.

Now watch this:

If I am going to do this, he simply could have me take a couple days to get my VP up, take back the 9000 delegation, give it to someone else, and get the same results with me operating between 90%-100% with 1,000 SP.

Personally, I try to keep my VP above 90%. There are time it will drift down to the 85% level but I am not comfortable there. If I end the day at the 90% level, I know the next morning I'll be around 96% or so...which I tend to immediately bring down to the 90% level before I head off to work.

What amazes me is I see so many on here, who have significant SP but their votes are worth little because they are between 10%-20%. Over time, I watch them stay in the same range. They will power up a bit, perhaps even getting near 30% only to run it back down. Why do you operate at this level? Slow down for a week (or take a couple days off) and get that voting power back up. Make your vote worth something.

The answer many give is "there is so much good content, I just can't stop voting". While that might be true, it is a mathematical impossibility to vote over 20% a day for any length of time. If one voted at 25% a day, after 20 days, that person would have zero voting power left (5% x 20 = 100%). Instead, people run their voting power down and keep it there, opting to maintain a range much lower than normal.

People like to whine about the unfairness of the reward system and how the Whales are favored. Without getting into that nonsense which I already dispelled in a number of posts, here is a situation where people are leaving money on the table. You are doing a disservice to everyone who creates quality content that you like and upvote by having your voting power so low. It really is that simple. When I lack the ability to maintain a high voting power, I screw everyone I am upvoting out of 80% or 90% of the reward that my vote would normally carry. Since most of who I vote for are dolphins and minnows, I am pissing away a large percentage my part of the reward pool that could be distributed to smaller accounts.

So why are you pissing away your Steem Power?

Stop doing that...it is a disservice to all.

I'd say it's because people have entered others in Steemvoter, or on those Distribution Lists and so their votes are automatically gone before they even log on.

I don't have any Steem Power but I really struggle to get above 20%... there really truly is just so much that I want to commend and congratulate the efforts of. Of course no one has delegated any power to me, so I'm not affecting anyone else... but it is hard. There really is so much good work here. I get too excited.

I'm leasing delegated sp and it has really boosted my presence here. I think it is worth it if your sp is below 5000 and certainly below 500. I would love to have someone delegate it to me for free, but it is relatively inexpensive and much better bang for the buck right now.

How does one get a delegation

Yeah, that's the problem with having to conserve votes. If you get involved in a discussion, you start upvoting replies and WHOOSH, it's gone.

The fact that a few thousand SP is going to make us financially independent is making me all jolly! Dolphin status incoming within this year for me.

Absolutely you will.

I read today there was another who thinks like me...@cryptoctopus stated in one of his comments that he thought $100 was realistic.

You will make dolpohin...a little extra upvote to help you get there....

$100 isn't realistic . Facebook has a market cap of 500 billion, us less a billion. As steem and blockchain is disruptive innovation, it will eventually be much bigger than what it replaces, since it doesn't only steal market share, it increases wealth generation.

Why are you so bearish with your 33x predictions?

That is in 12 months....

After that, it is much higher. 😁

Now for those who have at least 500 SP on Steemit or those who use busy.org, you have the vote slider bar

A nitpick. I think a slider takes effect at 1,000,000 vests rather than at 500 SP. Not a huge difference in that right now it’s at 487.733 STEEM PER MVEST according to steemdb.com

Good to know. I'm delegating 500 sp each to 20 noobs in my home city.
If they get the slider bar straight up that'll be good.

This is a great idea. If people would delegate to those who have 45-55 sp - that would make a huge difference. Instead of giving more power to whales who already have power, help the little guys come up.

#underabigtree
I'm trying to build my home city.
Ironically I think the face to face element is really important for online community building.

I agree. The locations that have regular meet-ups seems to do well. I'm seeing this is the SE Asian communities near me.

Good for you to get it going locally. Find the people who blog already about your location and they might jump over.

Personally I think it somewhat related to "traditional" social media. On Facebook or Instagram I can "like" or ❤️ basically any post I want and it doesn't do anything to my power because there is no power on those platforms. When I'm here on steemit I get a bit carried away and want to upvote those commenting on my posts and posts that I really liked and posts that might be about something I never thought about etc etc.... I really should stop upvoting for a few days and let my VP fill up again, but I want to reward what I like!
I understand what you're saying for sure, it's just a conundrum for me personally to fully implement it!

I was making the mistake of voting too much since I just joined, I need to take a day or two off so it can reset, or at least only vote once or twice a day. This was a great write up and should prepare me for when my SP is higher. Thanks for that, it will help me help others down the line. (plus if I build back up to 100% I think I'm worth $0.01 now wooooooo!

The SteemNow app is really handy for keeping an eye of what your voting power is. When it gets to 80%, most recommend letting it power back up again.

Peace.

Thanks for the tip!

Heya taskmaster... I'm a guy that finds it hard to comment on a post without upvoting. Because people will see I'm there and see that I didn't vote and I fear seeming ingrate.

I want to tell those guys I care about them, but if I show up empty handed am I not showing I don't care enough?

This is why my voting power is so low T.T

Forget that logic. Your comment is worth as much if not more than a small vote. We only average about 2-3 comments per post and engagement is what drives the alexa ranking. The more comments the better and do not worry about voting or not.

I comment at least 50 times a day and surely do not vote on 30% of that. I've only been asked about 2 times in 6 months.

Just keep commenting. You can make up for all the people wasting their breath in the chat rooms for free.

I agree, getting an upvote is nice really nice, I am waiting for the time I will be amazed. But I love the conversations, the comment and reply. And really get to know the people you want to vote for. No comments on a blog but 10 votes is not a good blog. It works depressive :-) I vote to fast, I am the typical example of this blog. Signed in to a few bots, and got out again. It left me no voting power at all! And I do want to vote myself, and not on some Arabic , or Chinese text I am not able to read. So interacting is for me most important.

Thank you for asking this!

That's a really good point.
I haven't crept back over 40% in several weeks.
Didn't realise the reduction was that severe.
Might have to leave it alone for a while :)

Go to steemnow.com and play with the calculator.

It will really show you what your votes are worth at different levels.

https://steemworld.org is pretty slick as well with knowing your voting power if you have not checked it out yet

Steemworld is an awesome site too...a ton of info.

I love every bit of this post,is highly educative. As a newbie that is still leaning, I was able to get a whole lot of information here on how Voting Power can be managed. But you made mention of bandwidth in your post which I don't really know what that means. Can you kindly help me to throw more light on it sir.
Thanks

The things is for me at 100% my vote is worth a penny. And at 50% it worth...a penny. Now obviously thats not true, its undisplayed sub penny differences, but yeah. I have to get more SP before I can bring myself to pay attention

My voting power is very low, but since my SP is still very insignificant there is not much difference between 100% and 30%.

Thank you so much for writing this!! I am explaining this over and over to the freewriters group. Now, I can just link your article!! yay!!

How on Earth did you use up your Bandwidth. Please write a post about that. Please let us know how the hell it happened.

I'm one of the The answer many give is "there is so much good content, I just can't stop voting" people on steemit. I hope I'd be able to unlock the voting slider. I think it unlocks at 500SP. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It'll take some time for me to reach there. I'm trying to do less upvotes a day for the time being.

Yes it does unlock at 500 SP...as I mentioned, the busy.org interface gives people the slider bar immediately. You might want to take a look at that.

When new, like in your first week or two, the bandwidth is very very low. I guess all the transactions I conducted between voting and commenting, which I did a ton of, used it all up. As we become more active, our bandwidth increases significantly....obviously it is not in the blockchains best interest to have people have to stop interacting because they used up bandwidth...especially active people.

Thanks for the tip on busy.org
The active people are bound to get some upvotes and they can power up with few bucks if they already have some cryptos. In a way showing that they have limited bandwidth based on their stake is a good way to practically educate them why STEEM tokens are important, valuable and why STEEM isn't any sort of a ponzi.

Tell them and they'll forget.
Show them and they'll remember.
Involve them and they'll understand.

Feel sorry about your excellent article getting downvoted by a Payed upvote bot. We are at where BTC was 4 years ago.

Ok, I think I'm beginning to understand something. So most of my votes have not been useful at all for all those well elaborated post makers that I've reading and voting here and there. Oh well, I guess you learn something everyday, now it's time to give voting a rest for a few days, so it could be the time to comment and write and create more rather than voting other's works. Quite useful info for us newcomers, just a few days in Steemit, in fact I think I'm the person with the lowest (xx) of the ones that have commented here. Forgive my English. Thanks for the useful info.
Vaya, empiezo a entenderlo.

Comments will get your reputation up...people will upvote your comments....which helps your rep.

Plus their upvotes tend to give you some SP...which will also help your VP.

I try to remain in the 80-100% range. Unless I am going to be away for a few days then I go wild

I Love the picture u used first and the way You took time to explain .keep it up

Excellent article. I slightly disagree with you. You wrote that the newcomer completely exceeded its bandwidth. I did the same. All because we had a beginning to interact with others. For example, how to comment on the articles of others without voting for them? And after all, comments are the fastest way to rise for a beginner. This situation, like everything in our life, is very relative. There is not one absolutely correct advice.
Good luck to you and good.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only time you're wasting your SP is if you don't vote when you're at a full 100%. Here's the calculation:

Let's say your 100% vote is worth $1
You could vote once every 2.4 hours (exactly) (10 times/day) and, in 1 week, you'd have distributed rewards worth 10x7x1=$70, and have 100% power at the end of the first week.
OR you could vote every 10 times in the first minute of the first hour each day
100
98
96.04
94.1192
92.236816
90.39207968
88.5842380864
86.8125533247
85.0763022582
83.374776213

You know, what? This is long enough that I just went ahead and made a post! I've seen this line of thinking before and, well, I'm responding for a perceived need.

https://steemit.com/steemit/@improv/math-and-steemit-voting-power

you are making good use of VP...i never reached at 90% voting power...it always remain below 80%...very nice post by the way...

Not enough bandwidth?
Have a look here:
https://steemd.com/@wetten

:))

Yes..that is low...a little while longer going vote crazy and that will hit zero.

Thank you for explaining this in simple terms for me and others.
It really has helped me understand more about the VP and percentages.

Great artical and exactly what i have been looking for. I have been going a little vote crazy over the past 2 weeks because i am fairly new to steemit and like how it works . I was never 100% sure on how the steem power worked but now i am good and i will use it wisely. THANKS.

Do not worry @burkulese.

We all do it when new....we simply do not know any better.

And besides, unless on buys a significant amount of steem power to start, it doesnt really matter much until one has some voting power. That said, habits are formed early and it is a good practice to be mindful of the voting power.

Plus without the slider bar on steemit.com which comes at about 500 SP, you have to vote at 100% which uses up your power.

Excellent advice!!!

I was delegated 5K by FulltimeGeek and I also follow your style. I keep my VP above 75% anyway. There have been a few times I am as low as 75%. But you are right... unless I will take a few days off, it doesn't do anyone any good!

It is good for the minnows to read this!

Thanks for sharing!

When I started posting, voting and commenting, I had ZERO clue as to how any of this side of things worked. I soon read that someone said "Don't vote if your power is below 90" and so I didn't, but I still didn't know WHY. Thanks for the post and the information. Unfortunately (or ironically) I am currently below 90% so I'm not sure if I should upvote this for fear of seeming like the rebellious pain in the a$$ type. :/ I guess I'll come back later for the upvote part.

Thanks again for the info!

Well i was just about to upvote this post as its been super helpful. I had no clue how the voting power worked.

I did however, first check steemnow.com... And my vote would be worth jack as my voting power is below 40% and I'm still a newbie so low steem power in general even with converting all my SBD to Steem and powering up.

I'm spreading too much love and desperately need my slide bar lol... Ill need to be more reserved in the future or at least until I have more input into how my votes are divided.

I will however follow you as I clearly need to learn more and my hubby @shai-hulud likes a and finds value in your content.

Enjoy the holiday season.

Thanks for the explanation. It makes sense and I will keep it in mind.

That makes sense to me. I like to learn from people who get it.

Thank you very much for the article although I think my vote value is under 1 cent with my current sp I will definitely keep this in mind for the future.

I found this article through a link so I'm kinda late to the game.

Great explanation of how the voting process works. The visuals help and I think you do a good job of explaining how the people's votes affect their vote value.

One thing I noticed you didn't touch on was that although your VP recovers 20% per day, each vote only costs you 2% of your current voting power. Therefore, if you don't wait for the VP to recharge (the way bid bots do), your vote won't be quite as powerful, but it won't take as much VP. As you can see from the chart I included below, after 10 instantaneous votes, you would only be at 81.7% VP, not 80%.

One of the values of running your VP lower is that it takes much less VP to give a vote. It's a rough way of giving 25% VP votes rather than 100%. The difference is that you don't have the option to give a higher vote, because you're already voting at 100%.

I could give 10-11 100% votes that would be worth .03 - .04 but at this point I feel it's more worthwhile for my followers and for me to give 25 0.01 votes. I get more exposure and more followers get an upvote.

Wasn't sure if you were aware of the 2% being relative. I enjoyed your post and hope to see more from you.

Note: I won't upvote this post as it's long past payout. You post good stuff though, so I'm going to be following and will hit you up there. :)

Really helpful to newbies. It is confusing trying to figure it out alone. Thank you:)

It is my pleasure @karenfoster.

I agree it is very confusing and that is why we are here....to help each other out.

I am new.. and this was very helpful to me. Thank you for sharing. Will look for more of your posts!

You are very welcome @earthmother.

And thank you for your future support.

Nice refresher on the mathematics and best application of SP. It's easy to get excited and start liking things, but to make a difference, your approach seems to be more valuable.

Thank you for this post. It has made the voting system much more understandable. Before reading your post its workings was a mystery to me.

Among the complexities of Steemit is getting the hang of things like ... 10 votes a day, what is voting power and how to use it, why bother if your vote is so tiny it doesn't even register, etc. ( <--- That last one is and was a real psychological issue for me. I hated that sometimes I would vote on someone's great content and actually see their total pending payout amount go down. I also wish we weren't limited by the 10 votes a day rule. Maybe I'm just not disciplined enough.) Anyway ... we dropped by tonight to see what you had to say ... and found this little gem to cast two of our votes on. You didn't disappoint! (Now don't spend them all in one place!!)

This excellent post was included in our new curation effort The Magnificent Seven -- a collaborative work by @enchantedspirit and @catweasel. You have received a 100% upvote from each of us to show our appreciation for your post. To see your creation showcased here ... and the fine company you keep ... please visit this link.

We appreciate your support both for our work on this project and for the other creators of exceptional content who make it all possible. (Follow @catweasel to catch our future Magnificent Seven posts. He's really not as annoying as you might think. <--- He always makes me say that.)

I have a hard time understanding the math behind all of this.. I really do.

Congratulations, you have received a free upvote from @bonds!

Bonds offers a hedge against volatility as well as paid upvote and reSTEEM services.

Bonds is not a bot- this is run by humans, for humans.

Check out our #introduceyourself post to find- out more- if you like the idea, like or reSTEEM it, and we all benefit.

Happy STEEMing!

It is like this article was written for my benefit. I appreciate the well explained information. I have been blindly feeling my way around Steemit over the past year. Slowly I am discovering well written and detailed posts such as this one. Thank you very much for sharing @taskmaster4450.

I am late to the game on this post but I really appreciate the breakdown here. As a new user I've been slowly soaking up the mechanics of steemit. I've neglected that because I've been trying to focus more on creating worthwhile content. This helps me understand, as well, how people are engaging with what I post.

It sais that my 100% upvote is worth 0.00 $
haha

The information is very useful. Thank you.

Thank you sir for the explanation. I now know better.

I have such a big problem with voting! , many times I do it whit out thinking. :-( When you vote and realised you did wrong and take your vote out again, is that oke ? Do I then make my mistake straight again?

Ok, I wish to say that I found this post eye opening even though a lot of what you say is a little beyond my current understanding. That said I learnt some, like alot! - thanks.

I have only been active here for 23 days and yet I have managed, with the support and encouragement of the community, to get my influence up to a respectable 45.

I have been hitting my head against the proverbial Facebook brickwall for years and can honestly say that, here, I have already garnered more engaged discussion and traction.

I am fully committed to the platform, blockchain and crypto and have a unique voice here to add value to all.

These relatively new developments will be integral for reclaiming our beautiful world from the grasping clutches of the elite, governments and corporations who are hellbent on enslaving the masses.

Sadly I do not have any money to invest in SP and so my participation carries no bang regarding buck :(

Still, I have decided to forsake FB and put all my efforts into growing here.

I invite folks to pass by mine and let me know if my efforts resonate with you :)

With Love xox

There is nothing wrong with not having fiat to put into SP.

That is part of the miracle of the "broof-of-brain" concept of Steemit. You can come here with no money and, simply by contributing, can earn steem. Over time it will grow. Too many, myself included, want it to all happen in a few weeks. It does not. However, like you referred to, when we compare to what we made on FB or Reddit, we are way ahead of the game.

Keep commenting and adding your insight into whatever the topics are. You have some wonderful things to say. Together, on this blockchain, we are going to do wonders to break the stranglehold the banksters have on humanity. Down the road, when STEEM is $100, the amount of money people will have is going to be incredible. That is why the time to start building is now. Each SP in your account is going to have much greater worth a year from now.

As I am repeatedly writing, this place is going to explode and the token will too at some point.

Bahahahaha. Wow. So... Ha. First of all, this post was VERY informative :) So informative, that, even though I literally just read your post, I rushed to "upvote" you--forgetting altogether that my vote level was.... 68%!! (This brings up another question: how to manage "de-voting;" like just now--would it be "better" to "unvote" and come back when my vote is higher? Or just leave it, bc doing all that would actually use up more steempower, what have you). I just thought that was funny because it illustrated so perfectly the response that "there just so much good stuff I have to keep voting!!" I can relate--too, bc it's kinda cumbersome to have to, what, leave and go read some other cool content that I can't vote?? I think the only answer is to, like you said, @taskmaster4450: take some time off and then come back and just be mindful.

On that note, I am going to... go watch Seinfeld, and perhaps be back

I'm going to have to re-read this slower to digest it all. First introduction to how to improve my SP, which is something I want to do daily. It's a lot to take in.

Excellent explanation on SP. Thanks for the breakdown of it all. My first active weeks I also received bandwidth errors. <3
