Sometimes I get so excited I cannot contain myself.
There are some people who take exception to my optimism, instead wanting to focus upon all that is "wrong" with STEEM. Well, if that is the reality you want to create for yourself, then go right ahead. Personally, I see what is being created on here.
Screw the FUD. Anyone buying into it is showing a lack of understanding of what is taking place and how easy it is to manipulate. Whatever the mainstream is saying, ignore it.
I often write that the best thing is to watch the development. Taking this approach quickly leads to overwhelm, which is a good thing.
The bottom line is there is so much that is taking place on this blockchain that I cannot keep up with it all. It is really amazing to see the development that is emerging.
For all the things that STEEM can do, we can add book publishing to the list.
Have you ever wanted to publish a book? Here is your chance.
Or perhaps you wrote a series of posts that were separate yet would make a nice book. Guess what? You can do that too.
Introducing Dbooks.
DBooks will ultimately become a decentralized platform where individuals can publish books on the STEEM blockchain and earn rewards. It is java based and runs in the browser.
Signing in uses Steemconnect so the site never has any of one's keys. This is a great security feature.
One of the biggest drawbacks to social media is often that things gets buried. Posts that were made 6 months ago are not easily found. This can be problematic when there is valuable information such as How To for new Steemians. That information is, essentially, buried.
Now, we have the ability for someone to take those posts and put them in a "book" format. This will enable easy access for anyone looking for said information. It is also something that, I presume, can be easily passed around.
This site is available for any work that someone wants to post on the blockchain. People can post fiction, non-fiction, even NSFW material. This is a step in the move away from the ability for anyone to censor. All voices should be heard. Hopefully, as Dbooks further decentralizes, this will help us go in this direction.
Upcoming Features
Dbooks is in the alpha stage at the moment. In fact, the original post must have gotten a lot of hits because the website is presently down (such is the way with new technology).
Nevertheless, it is obvious some thought went into this.
They list 8 features they are going to be adding.
A) Book rentals
B) Book reviews
C)True Decentalization
D) Profile Management
E)Improved Book Management
F) Custom Tages
G) dBooks App
H) Multi-user sign in
Dbooks is also looking to be open source and put the code out to bitbucket in the coming days.
The full write up is found in this post along with step-by-step tutorial of how to sign in.
This is a great addition. Steemians creating a library of works is something that could really help promote the expertise that exists on here. We have people who are knowledgeable about so many fields. It is crucial that this blockchain exemplify this.
To me, this could be a feature that helps to separate STEEM from the traditional social media sites. We know Ebooks are huge business as evidenced by the existence of Amazon. STEEM having the ability to offer a similar feature is a nice step forward.
Hopefully all will support this project. It is just another application that could draw people to this blockchain.
The price of STEEM goes down yet more is added to the blockchain. It is becoming a daily occurrence. Eventually, there will be so much here that the market cannot ignore STEEM any longer.
In the meantime, just keep posting, commenting, and upvoting. There is a lot more coming.

That looks really awesome. It’s a perfect starting point for helping authors get published. It’s an amazing way to align interests by authors eating rewards every time they update their book. This is really exciting for sure! Thanks for the share! Resteem

This sounds great, but I have a question: Given the current Steem rewards system (7 days to vote), how will authors be compensated in years to come? Once a book is released on DBooks, the author has only 7 days to earn a reward. What about readers who read the book months, or years, down the line?

I imagine that is where the "rent" feature comes in...after the 7 days, people will have to pay to read it.
Just a guess.

I'm with you on the non believers of steem, they dont focus on the long terrm or the platform. It will be really cool if over time they got into the actual book industry but that will take quite some time. I tried writing a book and got quite far but the process after is difficult.

Holy cow, the wattpad of steemit, this is exactly the type of platform to finally get my wife into steemit. Also a place for me to publish transparently. Thats wicked. This is the most exciting thing since I found out about coinbase announcing they are accepting erc20 last week. Except better and much more long term value to me as someone who loves to write but never publishes anything because I didnt feel It would be baluable to me to do so. Much love thanks for this awesome news!!

This blockchain contains a lot of information about blockchains. Traditional publishing can’t possibly move fast enough to crank out How To books about blockchain technology that will likely have a wide open market over the next few years.

That is a great point.
All of technology is moving so quickly that a book in print is outdated before it comes off the presses.
Dbook.org could be something really good for the next couple of years....
It would be great to see someone like @dan put stuff up there...although I doubt he has much time to write books about blockchain lol.

I wonder if we could buy or rent books with directly with upvotes?

The rent book feature is not available right now, but we are thinking of using SBD as the currency of exchange. We will fine tune the idea before realising the feature. Suggestions are welcome please.

The flunctuations in the price of steem will be a major hindrance to the upvote payment. After the 7 day period has lapsed, there's every possibility that the value of the vote might be less than the worth of the book, that's a loss to the writer. It could end up being more than the worth also. I feel the best way to handle payments will be through transfer of funds (SBD/steem)

Damn, almost feels like this blockchain offers a new surprise each day! Seriously, there's so much stuff being created and added here, it's practically to keep up with all of it now... Hopefully Dbooks goes a long way, because Ebooks are quite popular and the demand is really nice.

This is a fantastic opportunity. I know a couple of guys that have had the dream of publishing a book. This is their opportunity. There's one more reason to join the Steemit train.

Dbooks is a great innovation. Publishing and selling a book at a profit is not a walk in the park, considering the competition out there. The good news with Dbooks is that you can publish chapter by chapter. And build your reputation while earning at the same time. I know no other place where the rewards are so high. Thank you for the good work.

Not only are they starting a blockchain-based publishing site, they're adding a lot of features to it. For instance, book rental and multi-user log in. That's not just a publisher, that's something that could allow it to compete with Kindle at some point! So cool.
