Staying active on Steemit is very important.
But staying active doesnt mean that you have to be posting all the time.
If you can just keep on commenting on people's post, its as good as posting, because Steemit considers posting and commenting same.
Every single comment is also considered as a post in steemit and its reward is also same.
So if you are not posting as much, no problem but you have to be commenting and there would be no issues what so ever.
Keep steeming.
Days that you are inactive come back to haunt you 7 days later when you don't receive any rewards for that day.
I find that if I have a day where I'm not inspired to produce a blog post, commenting is a good option (like the op suggests) and also using other apps helps.
There is D.Tube, Zappl, Dmania, Dlive and many other apps on the STEEM blockchain that allow you to earn.
A day spent making a couple funny memes can still be worthwhile. ;)
