Community Brainstorming: What is Steem's biggest strength?steemCreated with Sketch.

in steem •  6 years ago  (edited)

We've got all this combined brain-power inside our community of Steemians, but I don't think we're using it optimally yet.

Let's change this!

Question: What is Steem's biggest strength?

  • What makes Steem unique in contrast to other projects?
  • What will keep Steem attractive for users, developers & entrepreneurs (existing as well as new ones) in comparison to other blockchains?
  • Why are you here and not somewhere else?

The goal with this question is to find out what we (as a decentralised community) should focus on to make sure Steem becomes a huge success in the future.

I'm going to curate great answers and would like to invite everyone to do the same.

Looking forward to the brain-power contributions!

An under-rated asset of Steem is that we have a SteemIt.com as a front door.
Hang on.. I know that sounds like crazy talk, because everyone hates the UI.
However, if I decide I am interested in using Tron.. I don't know where to go and what to do. Which wallet can I trust? Where can I connect with the community.

In the early days of Steem we did something amazing. We brought a bunch of non-crypto users to Steem and taught them how to earn, transfer, sell and hold crypto. That is an asset that most have forgotten about.

We have a "front door" or a "landing page" While our community is our biggest asset, we sometimes forget how we cultivated that asset.

I agree it's a big strength to have a "landing page" for newcomers to get into the blockchain. But is it unique? Will happens if other projects, maybe newer ones with better technology, also build themselves a project like that?

It's unique so far. :) However, I'm not missing your point.

We have a community, a one stop communication platform.

Easy to remember and use - wallet ids, that we call user names.

The ability to communicate important information to most of our stakeholders and the landing page.

Alone, these might not be special. In combination, we have the ability to do what most chains can't. Onboard non-crypto users and educate them.

It has always frustrated me to watch other projects trying to achieve some of the things we have while we focus on our weaknesses instead of embracing our strengths.

The ability to communicate important information to most of our stakeholders and the landing page.

Alone, these might not be special. In combination, we have the ability to do what most chains can't. Onboard non-crypto users and educate them.

Ok, but other projects are able to implement things like this as well, right? Which means we have a head-start.

But is there something we have, that nobody else has and is difficult to re-create for other projects?

We have a stake-based consensus voting system, with a number of applications utilizing it in different ways.

It could also be used as a tool for gathering direction on future initiatives and development process.

Since the Steem blockchain shares many attributes with Bitshares and EOS, I'm not sure we have 1 different thing to point at.

However, if you look at the combination that we have, of fast, easy to learn and use, community friendly and communication platform ready with an active community, I do think that is a powerful message.

This blockchain is a Marketing Dream and could go many directions if we could get a team focused on a vision and a direction, coming up with a Package is easy. Figuring out who's role that is and making it happen appears to be much more difficult.

2 years ago I was attending Dash meetings and listening to them wish they had any of those capabilities.

However, if you look at the combination that we have, of fast, easy to learn and use, community friendly and communication platform ready with an active community, I do think that is a powerful message.

Indeed! Would you agree that Steem could become the Wordpress of crypto?

This blockchain is a Marketing Dream and could go many directions if we could get a team focused on a vision and a direction, coming up with a Package is easy.

Would you be open to take on this challenge?

I'm interested in contributing to the success of Steem and I think that having a vision and being able to communicate it is one of the most important things we need to do. I am absolutely willing.

This blockchain is a Marketing Dream and could go many directions if we could get a team focused on a vision and a direction,

That's really very important. Hopefully we will have soon better efforts towards the exploitation of the Marketing strategy... We have the best blockchain but still we don't know how to sell it, but we are improving

Bravo. That's the spirit.

I don't hate the UI, I love Steemit.com UI!

To be honest, I am very used to it now too.

Same here

The potential for massive diversity in applications is a huge deal. A lot of folks are building projects that are a little competitive, but also largely complementary. And the more apps that are built, along with more adoption of the services, will both keep and bring more folks to the blockchain, in various ways.
Folks are starting to see other ways to integrate Steem too. It doesn't have to be the main point of the site. SteemPress is offering a great service for folks who already have a blog, for instance.
But there are other ways to do this too. We have our financial site with non-Steem interaction discussing markets along with blogs integrated with Steem to provide more opportunities. Scripsio was just launched similarly, with a lot of non-Steem social features that provide for good interaction, with Steem blogs as well as subsites available.
Now we're seeing Steem dapps on several sites, increasing exposure. Plus there are competitors being built, which inevitably compare themselves to Steem. Unfortunately, they almost always compare themselves to Steemit. But that seems to be changing as the overall community matures as well.
And that's probably the greatest strength of Steem. There's a strong community that surrounds the project. It's been fragmented a bit and has bruises. But there's still a strong sense of ownership and belong among many. This doesn't seem as evident with other projects.

In my opinion Steem has three biggest strengths. I know that three isn't anymore "the biggest strength" but ranking them seems impossible.

  1. It is the ONLY working product on a large scale in crypto. Other projects are only selling dreams. EOS and Tron and other coins seem great because they haven't experienced what it's like in reality. Steem, on the other hand, has had every single problem that you can imagine and is still working great. A lot of us might be afraid that some competitor like EOS will create something that works better, but the truth is that the steem community and steemit inc have so much experience already that is almost impossible for a competitor to catch up (if we stay on this track). Also, our main competitors are general purpose blockchains, which have bigger concerns than creating social dapps. It will be harder for them to compete with Steem on the social aspect, because Steem has only one focus while they have many priorities.

  2. Steem is a great innovation. I am talking about the "upvote" feature. This is already being used in extremely useful ways. Just to site a few: advertising(vote selling and bid bots), Steemhunt (and all other platforms where you are rewarded for finding good deals), musing (and all other forum type apps where you are rewarded for answering questions), and of course, all dapps where you can reward your favorite creators (steemit, Dtube, DSound, etc...).

  3. Finally, the third great strength of steem is that although it is a great working crypto, it also has a LOT of potential. SMTs will strengthen what is already happening on steem, by making communities feel closer. I predict that in the next bull market for crypto, many, many websites that have nothing to do with crypto today will incorporate SMTs in their websites. It will allow their users to feel part of a community, and be rewarded for their effort.

Adding to number 2, don't forget @cleanplanet and all the possibilities that incentivizing virtue brings!

I just recently joined the Steemit Community a couple days ago and I will say its a very interesting platform. From what I have noticed already is that the community on here is great! Very welcoming and helpful.
As for the site itself, I enjoy it because its very easy to navigate and user friendly. There are a lot of guides which really helps being new to Steemit!
As a young entrepreneur and freelance marketer, everything about this site is very appealing. The business aspect is so unique and that's why I am choosing to stay on Steemit. You can tell the admins put in a lot of work to make this as successful as possible.

The only thing I would really like to see is a "fashion" topic for users. I currently own/run a store in the fashion industry and the growth in popularity in the last 7 years has been extremely impressive. With there being a lot of independent artists, small brands, small businesses, independent designers, etc I think making "fashion" a topic could be very beneficial. These people are always looking for new ways to connect and share but there are no real places to be able to do this socially besides Facebook and Instagram.

*My second blog post I made kind of goes over my store in the fashion industry if anyone wanted to check it out to get a better idea of what I am talking about above! (there is a video towards the bottom if you do not want to read all the text)

-Steven

This reminds me of what Ned said the other day about his goal one day there being the need for a gardening community on Steem. For now you can add "fashion" as a tag at the bottom of your post and maybe it will become fashionable :)

Exactly. In fact, the homesteading/permaculture/gardening community is very active on steem, just check #ghsc

I think Steem is unique given its integration of its community into the technology itself. It provides unique and flexible journeys for thise interested in engaging in different ways. You can come in as an investors and find many ways to improve your return or as a developer to create Dapps to attract users to a proven blockchain. It also provides the freedom to shift between how you want to engage and still have the opportunity to invest, create or consume content or develop. While still a relatively small conmunity, it is a passionate one that has proven resilient and dedicated to achieving goals of a having a sustainable ecosystem for all who participate. This is why while I am invested in many blockchain related ventures, I am vested here for my time and effort.

This is an easy one. THE strength of STeem is that offer not only content creators but audiences a way to make money while doing what everyone have been doing on the Internet for so many years. So it is a win win for everyone.

Steem's biggest strength is in the prospective and unconditional believe that it's holdlers have even at $0.29cent, this is the reason why it'll survive, other cryto may die but not steem, believe me steem has unconditional believers in it's prospective future. This is also the reason why'd see investors come here, and I'm here, because no other place has shown more credibility, not anywhere else

Rapid financial transactions.
The potential to create new dApps.
Users being paid to create content and contribute to a community.

Posted using Partiko Android

Rapid financial transactions.

We're fast with 3s, but EOS is faster with 0.5s. So while this is a strength, it's not something we're the best in.

It's still fast than mainstream FIAT transactions. They can take up to 3 days in some cases. I didn't know about EOS's speed though. That's really cool.

Free Speech

That's true!

I thought free speech is not so hard for any public chain to implement? People in China uses memos on Ethereum to fight CPC censorship on some occasions.

Yes, I'd say the same thing.

I think about something else. Nor money, audience, nor crypto.
real Strenght of Steem is: FREEDOM :D

I agree! But it's not something Steem is unique in.

in my opinion steem's biggest strength is the working financial ecosystem that empowers people to create, don't matter if its just a written text, a picture, a video or whole application. EVERYONE can create and be creative on this blockchain, it don't matters what skills you have.

Everyone with a steem account. Although I have been thinking about a submission website model, where, say, facebook or google users could submit posts/comments/images to be posted by one main account.

that would be easy to build! but im wondering if people would use it? i mean you can get a account for free!

Here's my full idea - based on an activity I saw with @mountainwashere and @steemstem -

Users with facebook or gmail login submit pictures of unidentified plants and animals along with relevant information (location, climate, time of year, etc) into a website, which publishes IDENTIFICATION CHALLENGE on steem and uses steem power to reward the experts who help identify the species.

Users are informed through google or facebook once their submission is identified.

This is just the use case that I have thought of - when you start thinking that there is not enough SP for everyone on reddit to have one, other ideas start occuring to me. Also free account creation has been slow recently.

The social network paying people for their attention is the smart initial move to attract a community.

Then I think the real strength is how elegant and developer-friendly this blockchain is relatively to other ones like Ethereum or EOS.

At first you see the usernames as addresses and the fast 3s blocks.

Then you see how elegant SteemConnect and you realise this is the FacebookConnect you always dreamed of.

Finally you see on Steemd.com how Magicdice and Steem Monsters are interacting with the blockchain. This is when you realise you also want to develop dApps on Steem and become a blockchain developer.

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

Dan has incorporated an exchange with stable coin due to his parallel expirience from bitshares, with steemit it was set up to become a decentralised autonomous community.

Why I am on STEEM not somewhere else? I don't have to buy more RAM if I am using a lot DApps.

I will answer with one word to all 3 questions.

    • STEEMMONSTERS
    • STEEMMONSTERS
    • STEEMMONSTERS

I will say the biggest strength among us as a communtiy is the power of unity and cooperation, when we work as one, we can achieve a lot even more than our imagination. This can be seen at the Netcoin contest back then. With the power of unity and cooperation, we were able to make steem become first position ahead of many coins. Like you said, it has not been realised among us or let me say we are still yet to use it to the maximum.
So i will say the strength of copperation and unity

There is a ton of potential (marketplaces, dApps) but I will touch on the here and now.
As a merchant, if I have a product (which I do) I can buy Steem, upvote people that buy my product thus giving a sort of cash rebate all while simultaneously promoting the product.
As a content creator, I can earn money without the need to be approved by anyone. Micropayments even. The idea of a social media site combined with its own currency just made sense to me.
Community. A blockchain is nothing without anyone using it, and the fact after all the fud, a year + soul ripping bear market here we all are still talking about how badass Steem is and ways to improve it. = Super Bullish
Delete my account; I dare you. - The ability to say whatever you want without your account being banned is something we have yet to see entirely taken advantage. We will start to see more darklords that have zero choices but to use the Steem blockchain.
Lastly people like you, @aggroed @yabapmatt @themarkymark and countless others - The blockchain of go-getters.
Really I could write an entire post about why and I probably should.

The DAPP Ecosystem + Login WIth Steemconnect

Everybody knows most of the DAPPs and they support each other. Lots of websites use Login with Facebook with sometimes Google and few other accounts. This allows these sites to capture a large audience of users o register who would have never bothered to register in the first place.

Steemians also love to welcome new DAPPs. STEEM is a great place to market your product to a group of people who are already interested in crypto. If you release your DAPP on EOS/TRON etc. you still have a lot of marketing to do. Here it is just few hundred dollars on some bidbots.

  • No account creation needed
  • Not much marketing needed
  • Lots of other DAPPs you can collaborate with
  • Shares many advantages of EOS and TRON
  • The devs and community have far more experience with DAPPs than anybody on EOS/TRON

The fact that 44.02% of all created accounts have at least one point interacted on the blockchain is surprising to us.

Even if one would argue that steem account creation isn't free (unlike most other coins where one-time address use is the norm), Steem still come up top even compared to EOS which has enjoyed more hype than Steem.

While @coingecko is fairly new to Steem, our Gecko-Steemians told us that "Even if Steem fell all the way to zero, we've found some real friends during our time on Steem. That should have value in of itself"

We would conclude that the Steem user-community is highly "under-deployed", in a sense that it's theoretically simple for the community to make waves should there be a clear goal.

(case in point, CoinGecko.com tracks the social aspects of a blockchain too. It's not too hard for Steemians to subscribe to Steem's Reddit or follow on Twitter to give it a massive boost in mainstream awareness)

Hi @therealwolf,
I liked what @whatsup said :

However, if I decide I am interested in using Tron.. I don't know where to go and what to do. Which wallet can I trust? Where can I connect with the community.

what I liked the most in the steem blockchain, is the absolute transparency.

Dear @therealwolf, I appreciate your great efforts for the steem blockchain. So I have just voted for you as a witness.

Best regards

@hasmez

Community is the answer to all those questions. We have a unique network of individuals here who have proven to be able to cooperate with each other. I have never seen that anywhere else and it is the only reason why I still believe in Steem.

  1. Free speech/ not censured (probably the biggest asset)
  2. Strong community (good for merchants/ entrepreneurs)
  3. Fast and cheap token transfer
  4. Uniquely suited for dapps/ SMT
  5. Proof of brain--> knowledge is distributed fast and efficiently

I think a big asset is that there is an actual community of users that one can have access to to via steemit.

No other platform has a door into all its users via this community driven frontend. This can be leveraged and advertised to via the voting bots, so I think this is a great special and unique feature of steem.

Dear @therealwolf and @knircky, i have big pleasure to see the bounty set by a big whales of Steemit like you.
First i would like to say that Steemit is wonderful community thanks to @steem-bounty which is making what is missing in Steemit, the way to join friends and grown together with other members.
My suggestion would be to make in Steemit the option to see some advertise in order to recharge RC, which is the main trouble for new comers to join Steemit.
After HF20, i was so angry to be not able to make comments or post, but thanks to @steem-bounty i keeped strong and now i have no more problem with RC, so i would like that nobody will feel so bad as me few months ago.
I mean ads should be an option to be set in the user settings page, who need RC will not be angry to see some ads and get back able to post and comments.
The soul of Steemit is what @steem-bounty is trying to do, make people knowing each others and make them love to stay in this community.

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

I guess below are the strength of steem.

  1. Free from advertisement.
  2. Very large audience
  3. Vast number of topics here.
  4. Earning potential
  5. Support for dapp.
  6. Free transactions

It enables creativity through an alternative to traditional social media. It is at the same time where you create something (be it a dapp or a poem) and find the appreciation for it if you really do. Still, there is also the community which is willing to help and give actual advice.

What I want to point out is that it is the first place I found where you can communicate your ideas globally and find support from all around the world. People have a different level of commitment here, seeing the potential.

Also decentralization means its core idea is to work for the communities and not for a certain or uncertain authority. At least it could.

It is hope for you know how many? (Well I don't know, sorry for the expression, but I feel it is so.) And that alone has made me personally more productive. I started on a lot of new things that Steem may see to an end and I will be happy with them no matter what the financial success. The possibility of it, though, is a drive that increases productivity.

The Steem Blockchain's greatest strength is that people can get paid for some effort they put in.

I can't think of any other system or platform out there that offers the same sort of opportunities for effort vs payout. We shouldn't be trying to compete with Reddit, Facebook and Instagram because people don't use those services to make money. Some do, of course, but the effort they need to put in to get anything out of it is huge. Same with YouTube. I've had some videos get a big amount of views, and it's still just a fraction of what I've potentially made with dtube.

Even services like Fiverr, it's really hard to make money... the top whatever % do, and then everyone else gets copyright striked and Fiverr kills their gigs. With Patreon, you already needed to have put in the hours to build up your social standing in order to make anything.

So, the reason we're all here is because we feel we can make the most with the least amount of effort and opportunity.... and because there are many of us, this creates an ecosystem that businesses might be interested in. Active Steemians can be paid to put in effort to create content for businesses... whether it's content for businesses like Steemhunt, creating SEO links for CoinGecko via articles published or eyes on pages for Steemmonsters.

The payouts bring the Steemians, and the active Steemians are the product.

I think the biggest strength of Steemit is the reward system. You can get Steem or SBD by posting something on the Blockchain. Yet, I'm not sure whether this will be our 'USP' in the future too. There are already platforms using a similar concept like ONO, ucommunity etc and more are coming. A big thing which kept me personally on Steem is Utopian and Steemstem. They provide an opportunity to earn more Steem and SBD, so there is a better time-spending/reward ratio. Furthermore they have a exceptional huge and inspiring community. Even though I really like writing about personal stuff or things I figured out in my life, there is nothing more disappointing then writing for countless hours and then receiving a few cents and comments from a bots only. You see, I don't care as much as about the reward, because it is so low currently, I rather really enjoy receiving meaningful comments on my posts. It is somewhat as addictive as on Instagram or Facebook. Last but not least, I'm here for the people and the community. I want to figure out where the path with Steem is going and I want to be a part of it by bringing in my knowledge and skills. Yesterday I was at our monthly Meetup in Austria - we were about 8 people, not much compared to a few months ago. Today I read all the beautiful articles about our meetup, all having different views on how they experienced it. I think that is the real power. Knowing someone in real life and then seeing this person performing on the Blockchain. At the end, I want to thank @partiko for developing its wonderful app, in my opinion the best dapp out there. Hope this helps you in any way. Besides I'm a big fan of your work!

Ahh first of all the biggest strength of steem is it has the a very big community which has proved its presence in past very well and always does the same when needed.

Now why i am hear and not somewhere else??.... just because i believe in steem and so do i am hear to support it grow as well as grow with it as well....

I would say all the great apps on Steem is and Will continue to be the greatest strength. The other great strength of Steem are the members who work day after day to make Steem grow and more attractive to more folks

We share information and learn from others while still making some furtune from it. Not only that, we make friends all around the globe and join communities that we cant let go of even for a day.

Those who stayed back now the price of steem is low know the value of steem more than those who have given up on the way. Am here to stay not just fot the money, but for the community.

At steemit,
There are many different people, photographers, travellers, farmhouses, financial experts, etc.
There are some different communities,
There are a few applications - such as steemmonsters.

  ·  6 years ago (edited)
  • bloging platform as a news feed and comunication tool,
  • userbase that makes it easy to start a new projects,
  • delegation and earning tokens,
  • dapps

Omg, i have to say that im agree with must of the people that share theyr opinion, the biggest strenght of Steem its the comunnity.

Good look on the 100% self upvote on a post about community... You just have no shame whatsoever and cannot resist any opportunity to exploit this place.. Greed is definitely the biggest strength and driving force here, look no further than the creator of smartsteem desperately playing politician in an attempt to protect his investments whilst aiding and abetting in the capitulation of the exploitation...Please kindly STFU with your good guy rhetoric !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The main reason am here is because steem platform helping me intellectually. That i learn more on the platform than any other, getting familiar with people and their society.
Though it is arguably that main reason is gain by getting income but not applicable to me cause i have been on this platform for almost a year now and have never withdrawn anything.

This story was recommended by Steeve to its users and upvoted by one or more of them.

Check @steeveapp to learn more about Steeve, an AI-powered Steem interface.

In addittion to the possibilities that voting based token distribution creates for multiple different applications, since this has already been said, I will go deeper into one thing that no-one seems to consider, and it is stake-based vote-weight. All social-media platforms that run with ads are just almost purely based on quantity. This is why some twitch whores and get rich with these 10 steps posts make money without offering any value. Allthough not perfect, but still one of the best indicators of a persons intelligence and good taste is their capital, and with this, it much easier to actually reward and promote content that is past the stupid masses intelligence.

Well, it is very simple. Steem is unique because of the community and how big and cohesive it is. There is no other project that can be compared to STEEM that has this human force behind it (supporting it). "This is our competitive advantage."

We have seen some really interesting and attractive projects being developed, like @steemmonsters and @magicdice. The reality is, we have a great team of developers who can adapt to where the trends are going. And not only replicate projects with success, but also improve them.

I´m here because I believe in the project and I know how much money I'll make for being here so early! :D
And of course, every time I come here I feel rewarded, not only by post payouts (which is not much), but because of the different people interacting with me.

What makes Steem unique in contrast to other projects?

The community, with a vast user base and a lot of developers working on their own projects based on Steem blockchain

What will keep Steem attractive for users, developers & entrepreneurs (existing as well as new ones) in comparison to other blockchains?

Smart Media Token. Already existing dApps like @actifit will get more users, more dApps will be created and if some online media start to make their own tokens Steem price will skyrocket.

Why are you here and not somewhere else?

Because of @actifit and @steem-bounty and because it was the first blog platform with cryptocurrency rewards I knew about. However, Steem is in crisis and may collapse soon if Smart Media Token are not a success.

Answering your question, in my opinion.
Steem's biggest strength is that it allowed other to communicate freely.
It's up or down news will be writen by someone in their blog.
As for me, steem inside of steemit itself is a huge chain of communication internationally.

What makes Steem unique in contrast to other projects?

  • I really love the community, everyone is nice (okay not everyone but most people), I just love to come here and read new posts / comments.

What will keep Steem attractive for users, developers & entrepreneurs (existing as well as new ones) in comparison to other blockchains?

  • The rewards. It is absolutely awesome that you can build up a strong and powerful account just with writing high quality posts. Becoming a whale someday is motivating a lot of users today and I think it will stay the same in the future. Not (or at least not primarily) to make a lot of money but to gain influence on Steemit and to be a VIP in this community.

Why are you here and not somewhere else?

  • Because I have fun here. Sure, I came with the goal to earn some bucks here and to be honest I've sold Steem a couple of times but I haven't made a lot of money with it. So why am I still here? Because I enjoy to communicate with other Steemians from all over the world and read their (mostly) interesting posts 😃
