Steem Improvement Proposal, Minimum threshold for being notified of transactions / memo messaging.steemCreated with Sketch.

in steem •  7 years ago  (edited)

(The Attention economy)

In order to avoid spam using memo in micro transaction I suggest a UI change with new account data field recorded on the blockchain.

Users would be able to specify a minimum in STEEM/SBD to get notified of a wallet transfer.

The default could be set at 0.01 SBD, making it cheap for everyone but relatively expensive for a spammer without much to say of value.

Some popular users who are more often transferred funds just to get their attention could set the minimum amount to 1.00 SBD to be notified.

There has been attack in the past of users and there will be more so why not turn this "loophole" into a feature ?

This feature could be implemented right away by any front-ends without any indication of threshold stored on the blockchain.

As far as steemit.com goes, we are in the process of creating a UI for the new notifications service/system we have built. It's going to be integrated into condenser in the next month or two. It's really spiffy, including things like email or sms or mobile push notifications for savings withdrawals, power downs, key/password changes, et c.

This is a neat feature that we will consider implementing once we ship the first version.

That's very good news!

cant wait for it, this is going far. new things are about to come to open our minds and find the best solutions to fix every bug.

This is awesome news to hear. Excited to see what is to come. A solid notification system will be great to help others engage with the community in a more real time manner.

Great idea! That would reduce the blockchain size a little bit too.

I think it should be .1 , .01 is still too less

Nah, each person should be able to set their own. That would mean you would have to pay to actually send me an unsolicited message.

But what if that message if for the greater good of yours or the community as a whole? Messaging should be allowed on steemit. I am against on this 'transfer money while you talk through memo' thing. there are many things, some urgent as well, which need to be discussed. So, I guess there should be a message option with a block option so that you can block those who are spamming your message box.

Messaging is of course allowed. But people should have ownership and control of their own attention span. For a person who has a thousand people seeking their attention every day, that person should be able to filter out those who weren't willing to pay for their attention. That same person could lower their price to allow access to their attention if they personally want to make it more accessible so that they can better the community as you say.

But that should be a choice.

The idea I read a few years ago was to only charge for unsolicited (advertisement/spam) messages. Everyone else on your preapproved contact list could message at low/zero cost.

Users could earn money this way, or shut off spam completely.

I absolutely agree with this. I once reached out to a very well respected whale on Discord, unsollicited, but with a good reason and the response was very positive. But, once again, as a user you should be able to set from who you'd want to accept direct messages (only followers, everyone, or maybe even other settings). We do not want to force our most esteemed community members to suffer huge amounts of spam.

Great idea

Good, idea. I think too, that it should be 0.1 SBD. With the increase in popularity of steemit, this will attract more and more spammers in the future. Therefore including the UI with new account data field and record them on the blockchain will definitely not stop but at least refrain spam on steemit.

Even though you flagged a post of mine in the past months at the same amount of payout for excessive rewards, I will upvote this cause there is a real problem with the spam messages on the blockchain. I'll re-steem it as well for maximum exposure.

I like it. This is similar to my suggestion that posters should have the option to set a minimum required reputation level in order to comment on that post.
(Past payout)

Seems like a good idea to me... since we can't "legislate" spammers out of existence, the next best approach is to adjust the code to where any and all forms of spammish activity is disincentivized. That way the platform remains "censorship free"... but you basically have to be a complete idiot to engage in the behaviors that would otherwise have to be "regulated."

I think you are right there. You can't do this manually and you can't count on ethical behavour codes etc. You have to make it structurally unattractive to spam. The upvoting system as it works currently is too easy to automate and abuse. And that might be designed so on purpose to be more efficient but... makes it possible to abuse

Makes sense!
Good idea, I Vote YES!

Good point @transisto and In addition to my comment, and in support of your fight against spam here, I posted about the issue and mentioned you on the blog post. Feel free to check it out..wish you a blessed weekend

The answer is simple. Reduce how much content you can upload. I recommend one a day until they can remove all of the bots. They need to get on it, before they infest the whole system. Steemit is dancing dangerously in Viacom territory. A service that tried to rip off YT, lead to a lawsuit and their inevitable exit from Gametrailers.

What kind of content? Do you mean data on Steem or pictures on steemit?

Some receivers could still perceive it as spam despite the price, while senders could think it's legit because they've paid for it.

So true...

one question, would a user if it was UI based not able to spam using another interface ?

what is the problem with the micro spamming, does it all "cost" us something (i.e server costs, bandwith, etc. )

are some users getting huge amount of spam, that there wallet is bascially a mess?

I'm only suggesting a "Minimum $ threshold for being notified of transactions"

What is the problem, you ask ...
Why would we tolerate even one user spamming everyone else with 0.001SBD ?

Steemit is the best! Ever.

Please make more relevant comments, Your comment history is that of a pathetic attention whore.

He's most likely just using a comment-bot.

No, I don't use a robot! I'm new here and I'm still adapting

No need to lie buddy. The structure of your comments and the timestamps says it all. You should stop it before you get flagged ;]

I don't lie! Check out all my comments!

It's just my point of view! I am free to comment what I want!

YES

it is a good idea

Steemit is great but with a few tweeks could become the worlds premier social network.

Who doesn't like to be paid for something they already do for pleasure?

It has the potential to introduce crypto's to the masses.

DWD: Good!

Spammer is a world greatest enemy.

Can't we flood them? :-)
just joking. But they will always find a way in.

Maybe something like ignore list? That will help the trouble to pay or make more programming .

I would want the system to be free of bots. It should have the genuine users to make it as a genuine social media platform.

Absolutely, these guys pretends to hate spammers but what they do is more worst. Bots and spams are the same. They follow the same if else if command and loops. Both are using ai. However, bots cover and pretend to help community and other user to get decent reputation. While spam do not, its more likely to call selfish.

??? You can't stop bot on the internet, even less on a decentralized blockchain.
Better make them smart and let them fight each other.

Where you from my friend ? i want to know which country to belong to @ronaldmcatee

I would like to see this implemented for posts actually. But an exponentially growing cost for posting. The first of the day maybe .001, second 0.01 third 0.1 sbd 4th costs 1 whole SBD 5th post 10 SBD 6th 100 SBD and so forth.
Or maybe a fairer system would be the equivalent measured against % upvote value.
This way spamming becomes prohibitively expensive but it would not overly penalise quality posters who post 4 good posts a day.
Money could go to the @null account like promotion.

It doesn't makes sense 0.01 is enough to prevent spammers.

not for posting, if they can harvest a few dozen SBD per post with autovoting bots 0,01 is laughable and won't stop anything. Posting should have an exponential cost so that a human won't be penalized but a spam bot posting hundreds of posts a day to game the rewards System gets severely punished without human intervention .

I see @Ausbitbank and others trying to flag manually flag spam accounts, but that's like swatting mosquitos and it costs them their voting power which is unfair. You can't solve manually the automated abuses.
There needs to be a systemic built-in circuit breaker on abusive bot behaviour or they will suck this platform dry .

We had this last year, with the 4 post daily maximum.
(Posting more frequently reduced rewards)

I think this is a great idea. I'm totally in and vouch for it. Upvoted and RESTEEMED.

I recently started following you, and your posts are awesome :) keep it up! @ronaldmcatee

Great idea thanks :)

I think so
good idea
thanks @transisto

I think it's not a good idea to spam people with 0.001$ in the memo, I see wallets full of spam, I hope there will be a solution to this
Thank you very much for this post

Hi there @transisto... sorry to leave an unrelated comment, but I host the Steemit Culinary Challenge and your downvote on @tioluis entry has hidden it, and his is the winning entry! Best if we can actually see it! Was there some legitimate reason for this, or are you able to remove your downvote please?

Great idea! There's always a market solution to the problems that surface in a market and any market with good, innovative ideas and solutions (like this one) will successfully self regulate.

Yes I just saw this and would LOVE for this feature also! Happy to see the post by @sneak sharing that this should be possible in the new version.

@transisto Very interesting post and very eager to apply it and I am glad to see postings like this and maybe this version is very interesting for me to use greetings from me.
