Reducing friction for critical mass adoption of steemit

in steem •  8 years ago  (edited)

Warning : Only unpopular opinions below.

I've discussed Steemit with my colleagues (3), friends (9), blog followers (7,000+ with only 19 responses so far), in slack chats and on some Reddit post and here are some of the key points and impressions that have been made/expressed to date. I'm only posting the negative opinions because I can sum up the positive comments with three words, "I like it".

Note: Some of these issues reported have been resolved. Some comments have been paraphrased and/or portions removed for brevity.

  • "and they think theyll be the new reddit?"

I've been warned that I should not post this openly, but if you know me from the BitShares forum, I don't give a shit lulz. I think it's something that needs to be out in the open instead of hidden in private chats/forums and messages, otherwise things are unlikely to change ... assuming these comments are accurate, and I'll have to admit that I do tend to agree with a lot of it. But that's just me, your opinions are probably different and that's cool. I just thought some of you may appreciate hearing what's being said behind the veil.

Now get your downvote buttons ready ... and go! 8b

Errrr I mean, go reduce the friction! ;)

I think your assessment is accurate and your commenters shed great light on the challenges steem has ahead. I'm not at all surprised though at the current situation. Of course most of the people here are mostly interested in steem. It's alpha-brand-spanking-new, the user base is small. Of course steem related posts get the most upvotes, the user base is all steem-geeks. Of course most of the content is steem\bts related, that is the current user base. When someone is looking to curate for profit, they will consider the user base. If all we have is steem-heads, there is only incentive to upvote steem related posts. This should change over time as the steem topic begins to cool or is exhausted. It won't happen overnight. We will likely need to talk steem to death before other categories move up to similar interest or drastically increase the user diversity.

This shows a need for everyone to actually vote on nonsteem content. It also shows that the community is young. It's like complaining that a baby cannot walk, talk, and feed itself.

Out of fairness, I am currently unable to collect opinions on future versions of Steemit. I can only collect opinions on what currently exist, and that's what you're reading above. You guys invent me a time machine (a decentralized one is prefered) and I'll go into the future and gather up comments from a version a year down the road and get back with you. ;)

Crazy sir the baby stipulation Astronomically sounds outlandish. Lets move forward, Hopefully over #Steemit BARBECUE! €§©θฯ

perfect analogy.

If you look at what is happening on Medium, you'll probably understand how this Steem could easily get corrupted without hypervigilant oversight. In Medium, which does not reward with currency, but green hearts, there were a number of writers who ripped off content, then rebranded their post with click baity titles. These posts, that were bite-sized, easy to read and totally ripped off from other writers, were hugely popular, gaining thousands of green hearts. Click bait is a real problem in Medium, and there was a sizable war going on between the click bait self-help gurus and high-profile award-winning journalists. It was ugly. Adding currency to the situation would inflame this inevitable situation I think, unless a highly intelligent staff is hired and extremely vigilant about such matters. The war for popularity is never going away as long as resources are scarce, people are fighting for dominance, and the human condition continues to be wired for high social status seeking behaviors. I think this is a worthwhile experiment, but be prepared for the ugly side of our natures to be unleashed, as they certainly will be. How many users are currently here?

You can check it on the steemd.com homepage (on the right, last parameter).
As we speak there are 12360 registered accounts (probably not all unique people).

I'm new here and not exactly sure how people make money on this platform. Like how do you have $1,106?

I stir the emotions of others until their index finger clicks the upvote button either intentionally or by accident while shaking in anger. ;)

lol
Seriously I don't get it though is there a set amount you get for every like or how exactly does it work?

The more voting power a user has, determined by the amount of vested STEEM they own, the more their upvote is worth. So a whale with $45,000+ in vested STEEM (Power Up) can click upvote and you'll receive a lot more than someone with $10 in vested STEEM. If the Owner Ned or Dev Dan or another Top 10 vested STEEM holder upvotes your post, you'll likely earn hundreds to thousands. So be nice to them or you'll never earn a dime. ;)
