A Heads Up, Your Posts Are Worth More Than You Think They Are

in steem •  6 years ago

Two quick notes for new users or even users who have been here for awhile and didn't realize it. The total under your post is actually higher than steemit has calculated. How is this so? Half of the value is in steem backed dollars which is calculated as $1 a coin. That is not the actually value of the coin. As of today it is valued at $2.80. So that means half of your total should be times 2.8. Complicated? Well it gets worse :p. You are also splitting 25% of your value to curators. But how much the curators get depends on if they upvoted you after the 30 minute mark. But even if you are losing the full 25% you are still in the positive as you are getting that 2.8 times for half the value.

Here is an example.

Let's say you have a post that has 1 SBD and .35 steem. Since steem is worth 2.85 USD the total should read $2.00. And if you take 25% off of that you, as the author would get $1.50. But that isn't the case. Since that 1 SBD equals $2.80 and that, added to the dollar from the steem, makes your post worth $3.80. After you take off the 25% you are left with $2.85, which is .85 more than you thought you were getting :).

Don't like math, then just post and collect it as it comes :p.

And this is based on the default 50/50 split.

Authors get paid when people like you upvote their post.

ugh...my posts make 10 cents and 11 cents and I think that they are good posts...how do I get steem delegated to me? @whatageek can u perhaps advice me?

Not really you need to keep building you SP. Here is a push :)

I know, but I have 280 SP and it has taken a lot of good posts at 10 cents to get me there...exhausted

hey I gave you a 5 cent upvote for being so kind...u know I do laugh as some people post a photo of a flower or their car and boom they earn 20 SBD and my lovely stories earns 10 cents, sometimes 18 cents...I cant help to just laugh, atleast I enjoy writing.

Glad to know I'm not the only one puzzled by how some of this works. I seem to do better off of my posts that I do not find to be quality content but have photos of fish or the island I live on. Not that I don't understand why people like that but the posts where I take the most time to get my point across and take my time to go into depth about things I think matter don't seem to get half the attention my posts that take me only a few minutes to create do.

I make dance clips and I used to upload daily my danceclips...grrr...they never reached more than 40 SBD. my photos make at most 5sbd...but I lost some inspiration as I felt also no one read my stories and thoughts that I so carefully chose and wrote into beautiful posts. I guess I am still a minnow for a while...unless I can get some steem power delegated to me. but I wish I had so much time to spend here like others do...I start filming again on Monday so I will be offline mostly then.
Where is your island?

Hi @nomvula,
I have started on steemit around 23 days ago. I think the value of a post does not really depend on the quality of the content. There are very few posts that make more than 50 $ without "some help". Even if you have tons of followers and nice interaction, it will be difficult to reach trending posts without investing in bid-bots.
The way I could see how it works on steemit, I think that it is a exponential curve that we follow. The higher our steem power gets, the more we can make with our posts or with our votes and the quicker our steem power fills up. I believe that you will soon earn more and more (at least I hope so for you;-) ).

It is based on SP, so yeah bots or being upvoted with someone with high SP is how you make a lot.

thank u for the words of advice...yes...bidbots...those things...I been there and yes I use them, but that alone is a full time thing. that is also the only way I have made some money. any tips on some good bidbots at the moment?

I am living on Saint Croix US Virgin Islands right now and loving every second. Trying to spend as much of my free time in the water and exploring as possible, the more I do the more I was encouraged to try out blogging here on Steemit. I just started about 2 weeks ago and am trying to learn the ins and outs as I go. This island has a lot of character especially post hurricanes that I want to share with our steemit community. The recovery has been something to behold. So really now from what I’ve been reading from other bloggers who have had some major success on here is that I need to find my “niche”, like you have your dancing but I also struggle to find the time to write out the quality content I want as well as edit and post the quality photos I would like to share. It’s been a slow start but doing my best to keep up with it and not lose confidence, your post helped remind me that I’m not the only one out here having a tough time getting going!

you know I used to post everyday, but I could not uphold it...now I post 2 to 3 times a week and I actuaaly use it like my blogsite...it still is better than a blog where one does not get paid for content.

It is a bit complicated but I think I get it? hahah (definitely not good at math) I'm still kinda new and getting used to the whole steem world. Thank you for explaining this to us!

Sure you will :).

Thank you! :)

Lower bound of reward (with max curation)
1 usd worth of upvote = 0.375 SBD + 0.375 (worth of SP) = 1.425 USD atm

THe formula is simple and not exactly accurate but you could use it.

That is useful but I am just trying to get as much steem as I can atm.

So do we all )

Here is some help :)

Thanks a lot!

The last option works pretty well for me, post and just collect it as it comes, but overall if your calculations are absolutely correct, then fantastic, hmmn so the curating time is before the 30min mark...interesting

You keep a part of the curation if you are voted on before the 30 min mark as the author.

Can you explain the 50/50 split and what that means? Or just splittong in general? That is something i still dont reqlly understand... Thanks! Love your posts!

Also, is this post in response to some of the comments on your ad post feom yestersay?

When you post you have three options, you can convert all your rewards to steem power, split it between half steem power and half SBD or pick no rewards. I think if SBD is higher in price than steem you should pick split and then buy steem and power up with it. If you want to power it up that is.

No this post is stand alone but if you have any questions feel free to ask :).

I just had commented on your previous post in such a way that made this feel connected. It was as if you read my comment on the other post and then wrote another article instead of responding to me. Turns out you responded and wrote this unconnected haha.

I'm psychic :p.

Thanks you for sharing a great information , really I am useful form ur information, good luck my dear friend @whatageek 👍👍😃
All the best for you 👍😃😉

I always knew it was lower than it was when you manually calculated it, but could never figure it out! I knew it had something to do with the way it was calculated, and I'm so glad you posted this - makes a whole lot more sense now that I know it's based on $1 USD per SBD.

The correct information is that the $ Steam price in the store is high
A very special article thank you for the information

Best example now i get to know about steem calculations, though it's complicated but still helpful, will go through it again and understand it fully...

wow..fentastic notes.
great content of steemit
congratulations @whatageeek

really great clculation example of steem that i appreciated,,awesome thinking and awesome content

oh really great content news sir @whatageek for steem

if you post one more article you will have 30000 articles in your blog

I think comments count so yay 3000!

This is really complicated math...you need to be I guess a genius ...lol...
Thanks for the info ,it was tough to understand when i heard about this first time...but when you get involved with steem alot...it slowly becomes permeable and you get acknowledged...

Yeah like most things it becomes easier the more you are part of it.

Sure,it is all about you investing your time into ,more you do more it reflects back...

i think i should start blogging now
i haven't posted yet

Actaully.

I knew that

but thanks for telling these who didn't

@whatageek Thanks for letting us know. I'm just getting started and don't really understand how these things work. But your analysis has shed more light and I understand better.

Thanks for the explanation ! Thought the price under the post was in STEEM and not in USD.

I didn't understand it a week ago but somebody explained it pretty well. It can be pretty confusing at the start.
When steem goes up to 10$ the payout will be about 4 times what is shown. It is insane really. The potential of this platform is too great.
