I have absolutely nothing against Bitcoin. They are trailblazing the way for cryptocurrency. And if you own some, good for you, I hope you see a healthy return. There is room for several coins to thrive. And Bitcoin will always be the first. But as these other coins start to become more and more mainstream, I think they need to stand on their own legs, not just be the alternative to bitcoin.
The market cap on these other coins is growing and growing. And these coins have some great features that make them unique. Take steem, what other wealth give you social media voting power? I might be getting ahead of myself, bitcoin still needs to make it mainstream but these other coins are not far behind.
So let's drop the altcoins and have Bitcoin, Ether, Ripple and Steem (and whatever ones you want to add). We don't have the American dollar and then altcurrency.

therechas been another post some time ago about the term "crypto currency" should be rebranded to "smart money" this goes into a similar direction that I think is necessary.
Fun Fact: In German language "alt" means "old" ^^

Very good idea, you should write a post about it. Maybe we can refer to steem as smart money.

Yes, smart money is so clever! We should immiadiately use this term for all of the cryptocurrencies. Because the generations X and Z will certainly like to pay with their smartphones very soon. So smartmoney for their smartphones makes definitely sense!

This is really interesting. I haven't thought of it like this, but now that you mention it... it makes a lot of sense. I do not believe this will happen until we experience widespread adoption. All of the early crypto adopters will view it this way but the majority of the public will probably see them all individually and not "Bitcoin vs Alts".

Face it, Alt-coins have to remain Alt-coins as Bitcoin is in the public's eye, the face of Crypto! I feel that this name is well suited. We still have Ripple, Steem , etc but they are categorized as Alt's!
No big deal if you ask me!
