Why Is Steem Struggling?

in steem •  6 years ago  (edited)

Why is Steem faltering when we have a strong community and great projects?

PROBLEM

  1. We have no vision, no one knows what we are about.
  2. No one knows about Steem or hears about Steem
(push ups are fine, but not going to help long term)
  3. We are spending the Inflation that was meant to help us grow in all the wrong places.

Solutions

  1. Create a vision
@llfarms has been working on collecting everyone's vision as a starting place.
We will take that vision add some thoughts on where we want to go and what we want to lose and communicate it.
  2. Spend time energy and money promoting that vision with professionals who know how to get that done.
  3. Stakeholders start to support those who are working on Steem Projects. This not only includes Development, but also a business minded team of people to promote and market Steem.

We also have to retain and grow our powerful community to make this happen...

You are not a passenger, you are a stakeholder... however large or small...
What are you doing to help?

Changing the math on the blockchain might help with distribution, but no one cares if they aren't watching the project. We need to get EYES on Steem.

It does help to have an overarching goal for all the users involved. Maybe not all but at least for those who wants to contribute in ways they can.

I could be wrong, but from what I observed the community seriously lack developers free enough to tinker around. It's worse when Steem's main upgrades rely on a private company, regardless if it is run by a competent head or otherwise.

I guess we just have to stick it out. Bitshares is doing well for themselves even if they have a small userbase. Maybe there's something we can learn from them?

I don't think we are doing so bad. Projects seem to be growing and maturing. Unfortunately, there isn't enough Steem in the market to support many projects.

We are okay, but some of our stakeholders aren't happy with the performance.

Unfortunately, that's the reality of having such a small ecosystem.

@whatsup,
Yeah we all should have a vision and some successful projects stayed on STEEM blockchain only for build their fund base! We should build a mechanism to solve that also!

Cheers~

Maybe we are looking at this from the inside and not the outside...

We are here and we've stayed because we understand ....but ask yourself..
How long did it take you to understand steem, SBD and steem power? People who have been here a long time still don't fully get it. How many keys do you have? owner key, active key, posting key, memo key. Even general crypto currencies are complicated for the average Joe to understand.

Its too complicated and people are lazy..

Is it easier to open a facebook account and log in every where with that account. And if you lose your password you just request a reset.
or
Is it easier to buy/open a steem account learn about steem ,SBD and SP. Then secure your 4 keys and understand what each one does? And if you lose your keys you lose your account and everything in it or you have a major job to get it back.
People want simple non thinking interaction.

Then comes quality posts.. All i hear is quality posts, quality posts, quality posts. You want people to come from facebook instagram and twitter. Places where 90% of posts are nonsense posts. Picture of a cat with a hat or a dog in a bow tie. You really think those people will come here to be bashed with quality posts, quality posts, quality posts.

Solution is...
make it simple.. Simple is as simple does
Make it fun.. Stop the bashing of shitty post if you want people who make shitty posts. If you want all quality posts. Then don't expect people from FB and Instergram to come. If you want all quality posts and a niche following then be my guest but you'll never have exponential growth

Signing in to everything should be simple but secure.. steemconnect and keychain is a positive move.

Lastly think about it this way..
Did FB say to its users "Come and join FB so we can abuse your data and make billions from you" Nope they said come here and have fun, play games and share things with your family and friends
We need to get people to come here by saying "Come and have fun, play games and share things with family and friends" and even get paid to do it.
Keep the blockchain and the crypto in the background and make it simple and easy... "and they WILL come"

I agree. Brand new users with very little Steem don't need to worry about security. They will learn to protect it as they have more.

Agree with your message 100%. Anyone who owns even 1 STEEM should understand that it’s a stake in the Steem blockchain.

Not in Steemit. Not in any particular app or dapp or tool. In Steem itself.

Any way that we can contribute to making Steem better as a whole is not only desirable, but necessary. I can and need to do more and so do all Steem hodlers if we want to lift the external image of Steem out of the mud.

Yes, we have to police it, support each other, promote it... It's our job.

You don’t gain power by diverting the blame but we are tethered to crypto which is a bit of a joke or mystery in the eyes of a normie. When the tides turn and the general concept becomes a viable tender with less stigma and they will find all of us already as part of the steem blockchain.

That being said, the work we do now will pay out huge in the future. Additionally, or maybe multiplicationally, the innovations we build now will just accelerate the value and adoption of the blockchain.

Wonderful and clear message though. What are we each doing?

Agreed and I also think many of those leaving to greener pastures will be back

I've got my steem profile linked up on my Twitch Bio. Now I just need followers on both platforms 🤣🤣🤣

I think a lot of things have improved. I think when the price goes up a lot of problems will fix themselves more.

If you are talking about the price the answer is simple...from the perspective of speculators steem is no more different than other "altcoins".

We need to generate demand and pure speculation is not going to cut it. What I think we need is aplications that apeal to mainstream users that require resource credits to run.

Those users don't even need to know that there is a blockchain under the hood.

Yes we need attention. Everyone is talking about changing some math...

No one outside of Steem even knows what our Math is... Silly kids.

There is more on why #steem is flat.
Since it is a decentralized network, free will is everywhere.
Low price favors the whale more than you think.
#steem is the perception of reality.
Vision is only viable in posts and comments
One week it is @ 50 cents and the next it is @ 30 cents.
We need what you said but we need time and we need steemians that think #steem is not a cash cow.
Other than that or better to say this is how it will be.
Glad you see farther and hopefully, many will act accordingly.
Keep on postin'

Keep on Postin' We need every Steemian Large and Small to understand where we are going and what are we doing.

Less monster drawings... more catchy infographics... in the ideal situation...

@whatsup mostly I'm furious at myself for making #McDownTrends... Over 40 hours of art and animation just to be chuckled at by sleazy turdcoin traders and gawked at on youtube for zero profit. I could have spent that time on something for Steem.

Now, being rekt in both career and crypto, I have to wait a while before I can carve out time for an aggressive project like an explainer video...

Always on the move trying to become unrekt so I can be more useful both here and in every day life...

You've got talent.. It's very clear. I bet you will get unrekt soon.

Steem is still a small community and not growing that quickly. I do what I can to get people on board, but Facebook etc have captured them. I really don't know where this is all going, but I'll hang around for the journey

You are doing tons of things! :)

Thank you by the way!

We need a clear vision.

Cheers. I do what I can, but it can feel like we're going nowhere. The Steemit leadership have been fairly quiet lately. I can only hope they have plans

Dear @whatsup I like to read you, I understand your concern. When we build vision, we try to do it from those who know, but we can not ignore asking the base, that is to say what the communities that make life in this great platform think.
In one of my first comments that I made to you when I met you some time ago, I expressed to you that when I met Steem it was like love at first sight and I fell in love with this platform, but also with the community that accompanies it, I am still in love and When the low steem of equal price I stayed with much encouragement and positive vibes, then. I think it is important to raise the information of the vision, based on two visions, that of the expert experts and those of the bases as communities, of that contrast I am sure great ideas will arise, full of many colors of success. I share my love.
Good vibes.

You are such a happy presence on steem. It's good to see you! :)

Hopefully solution 2 can be funded with the upcoming Worker Proposal System!

I hope so too

I feel like we keep talking about the same things over & over, we need action, but the problem is, who's going to take the more serious action?Like the Marketing, which is the most important part at the more. Like you have stated, we really need eyes! The onboarding process is also another issue, it's still difficult for an average internet user to create a Steem account. Not like other SM platforms where you just need a Username & password and you're set to go. Lots of things to streamline here, giving it a few years.

We have action.

The DAO was just finished.
The foundation is about to start
We are working on the vision
We are planning on disseminating it.

We need support!

It is way too easy now to create new accounts. You can do it yourself to onboard new steemians.

I work for another platform, but I still love Steemit and I still believe that Steem is a great incubator of talent. I originally left because I tired of the spammers and plagiarisers but hoping that it is once again a place to consume and curate great content and engage with a vibrant community

limited awareness about steem is the main problem. in addition promoting investment opportunities regarding steem blockchain is very important

I don’t just know why it’s dumping, but that doesn’t shift my believe on Steem.

Posted using Partiko iOS

It's dumping because people look at BTC and see it is moving, but they have no idea what we are doing and how we are growing....

So they don't want to get left behind.

Why is it dropping?... bitbots and steem inc dumpin’ on us daily 😂😅

Posted using Partiko iOS

No that's not it at all. That is our internal struggle. Not the external struggle. Get focused.

I was being sarcastic 🤷🏼‍♂️😒... shesh lol

Posted using Partiko iOS

lol

I'm only a crypto-newb, and my understanding of this could be completely off... very likely is. But in these comments people are talking about the drop in price... and I can't help but notice:

Capture.PNG
https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/steem/usd

It's only following what Bitcoin does... do our actions actually have any power over steem? I like to hope they do, but from my perspective, we're simply tied to Bitcoin.

I dream to see the day steem breaks off btc

I'm out of the loop on much of this. As for #2, I have thought long and hard on the forced support that has been pitched. My main concern before being it would just be more projects handed off to those in the inner circles with little to show for it other than those in the inner circles having fatter wallets as little to nothing was actually built.

But let's say that projects are worked on and completed. Has the idea that these forced community funded projects belong then to the community, and not the developer who was funded been explored? Seems if we end up with forced funding these projects it should make us part owners too.

Luckily there is nothing else out there like Steemit, if the focus was on Steemit then Steem will follow as it must.

Many sell the Steem and put pressure on the price. I will go outside to make 15 push up for my day 9 because I still believe in Steem!

Highly rEsteemed!

This post has been included in the latest edition of The Steem News in 10 posts - a compilation of the key news stories on the Steem blockchain.

My comments about this might not be very appreciated because it will sound negative, but I think OP wants constructive criticism and I'm trying my best to deliver.

I literally just started using this today and noticed a few things.

  1. And this is the biggest one - The quality of content isn't the best. I noticed quite a few posts that are like 2 lines. Not sure why anyone would post something like that with no value. It just takes up valuable "real estate" on the pages. If content quality isn't that great, any person who may have thought about creating an account would be turned off very quickly.
Solution? I really don't know. I'm new to all of this. Off the top of my head, we need a better system to suppress useless content like that and highlight good content. But then again, that might not be possible. Google and Youtube, and every other community website had a lot of crappy content in the beginning too, so it might be unavoidable... or not? It is after all, 2019, and not 1999, and algos have come a long way. I'm very new to all of this, so please focus on my observations as opposed to my not-so-well-thought-out-solution, lol.

  2. Interface is a bit buggy and difficult to use. I'm by no means a techie, but I'm much better at using computers than the average person... and even I found it a little difficult to navigate. It isn't exactly intuitive. And on my introduceyourself post, I tried adding a picture several times, but it didn't work. I had to upload the picture to a different site and then link it via html code. Your average person won't know how to do that, and even if they did, they would most likely couldn't be bothered to go that far and just ditch the site. But again, I understand this site is very new and nothing is ever seamless in the beginning.

  3. From my experience, close-knit communities without a strong central authority tend to be very unaccepting and resist change. This causes communities to go through a slow death. YouTube has gone through several big changes, and every time they do, nearly every vlogger whines and moans about it for weeks, yet YouTube keeps growing and content quality keeps going up. Unlike the average YouTube vlogger/user, the people in charge have the knowledge, the stats, and can analyze everything from a macro-level, which allows them to predict how new additions and policies will shape the community. When giving too much power to the people, it gives the uninformed too much power. If I understand correctly, and correct me if I'm wrong - but adding new features that change the fundamentals of the architecture requires a consent of all parties involved, which makes it difficult for the whole community to pivot in a new direction, no matter how good it may be.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I want a totalitarian system. I definitely see a lot of advantages from decentralization which is why I wanted to get into this space, but there are good ways to apply it and bad ways.

Again, I'm very new to all of this. These are just my observations and I understand that I'm not providing any kind of macro-level bird's eye view solution to this because I just don't have the experience and knowledge on here..... and I'm not even sure what I'm saying makes complete sense, so feel free to correct me where I need to be. I will not be offended.

Quality of the content sucks because a lot of people are just farming there own low quality posts using vote bots to get more Steem. The good quality content gets 0 on Steem right now. No body is even looking and curating anything on the site. lol so yeah the content is gonna suck.

I feel that my role is mostly as an investor as I am buying every month to create my stake but I am focused on adding value with content and curating users and communities that will add value over time. It is tough given the size relative to the ecosystem as a whole but I believe that proving it works can get more like me involved and focused on the long term value creation instead of the short term payouts.

I think we need to talk more about Steemit on normal social media. Like link our blog post to our walls and such.
