After just over four months on Steem, I’ve reached the 1,000 follower milestone! Of course, the number of followers in itself doesn’t really mean anything. We all know that the majority of them are probably some type of bot or inactive account, but it’s a nice round number and that traditionally calls for a celebration - or a celebratory post as the case may be!
It may have looked easy (or maybe it didn’t, what do i know!) but in reality I have been working my ass off for the last four months and I never expected the level of success that I have achieved. Pretty much every second of free time when I’m not at my full-time job or doing things with my family has been spent writing or developing something to help improve the Steem platform. My wife really thinks I’ve joined a cult :-)
So how did I do it? I’ve written about this before, but I’ll reiterate it here - I believe that to be successful on Steem (and many other things in life) you need to create value for others. I create value mostly through my development efforts, and that type of work is highly appreciated here, but that’s not the only way to create value.
If I learn something new (usually about how the Steem platform works) which I suspect many people on here don’t know, I make a post about it. That creates value. Entertainment creates value as well - I like to upvote posts that are funny or otherwise entertain me by reading them. All sorts of different things create value for all sorts of different people.
I’m certain that every single person on here has some skill, talent, ability - whatever - that would create value for others if shared. The current community on SteemIt definitely values certain things more highly than others - such as cryptocurrency info and development projects as I mentioned. But I hope that the upcoming releases of “hivemind” and SMTs will lead to new communities that value all sorts of different things and show it through the rewards system.
So there you have it - the recipe for success:
- Work your ass off
- Create value
Collect underpants(oops, wrong recipe!)- Profit!
Last, but not least, I want to say a big THANK YOU to all of my followers and supporters! Without you, well...I would have 0 followers, and while that’s technically a round number it’s not exactly something to celebrate.
Help Support My Projects!
If you would like to support my projects and/or my ideas and vision for the future of the Steem platform, I would greatly appreciate your witness vote. To cast your vote you can:
- Go here: https://steemit.com/~witnesses
- Find “yabapmatt” in the list (currently #38) and click the ^ vote icon

Congrats on the new milestone. Point #1 should be on the top of everyone's list of priorities when it comes to posting on Steemit.

Congratulations! I'm working my way up to the milestone slowly; just another couple of hundred to go!
I think point 1. "Work your ass off" is not to be underestimated. It should probably be on the welcome page somewhere! Along with "Patience. This is probably going to take a little time."
It takes time to produce work of quality. It naturally takes time to develop the relationships which underlie the site. There are very few quick wins. But it does come together if you're prepared to put in the effort.

Thanks @miniature-tiger! You produce some really great stuff and I feel your contributions don't get the recognition they deserve - yet.

Congratulations! And thanks for the tips... it really isn't easy, but you just reiterated the very things I've believed in.
Except for collecting underpants, of course. That was hilarious! :D

That's an excellent story and very encouraging. I just found you looking through the top 50 witness list. To do this in 4 months really says something and we all know how fast other online media platforms have rocketed upwards after hitting an inflection point. On the one hand steemit is still relatively unknown but on the other it has reached enough users that the upward trajectory is set. For all those fortunate enough to have found themselves on steemit at this point it is well worth following your advice and getting to work. The opportunity to be a long-term standout is now.

Congrats on your 1000! "My wife really thinks I’ve joined a cult :-)" Totally relate to this. Everyone in my '3D' circle's waiting for when I drink the Kool Aid :/ It's time I had a look at my witness votes again and distribute them to those who are rocking the platform with humility. Hint hint :) Steem on!

Great. I as a programmer also want to develop some useful utilities for steem users, but I barely get any time. A lilttle while ago I wrote a very simple python based bot tracker (https://github.com/HamidMushtaq/steemtools/blob/master/steemdbtracker.py) that just crawled the steemd.com website to give the current bid amounts for different bots, but that is all. By the way, I saw one glitch in your bot tracker, maybe now you have corrected it, which is that if someone transfers while the bot is busy uvpoting, your bot tracker ignores those transfers. I had the same problem with my bot tracker, but my bot tracker is lacking many features anyway :)

It's a very hard problem to accurately figure out which bids the bots will accept just by polling the account history, especially since all the bots work differently. To resolve this I've created an API specification that bots can use to basically tell the bot tracker exactly what bids they will vote on. Many bots are using that now but not all. I'm planning to add an indicator for the bots that provide the API so you can know that what is shown on the site for those bots is 100% accurate.

It's great seeing that the two things you mentioned as being valuable to the steemit community are the exact same areas I am particularly interested in.
Well, your followers are now 1001 because I just followed you!
I hope to hit the milestone that you have in relatively the same time frame.

I started on this platform just copying and pasting my blog posts from my website and youtube channel. But nowadays, I am actually taking the time and effort to write awesome blogs and CONSUME content. Steemit and Busy are actual platforms that I check out for content; not just to post what I want to get upvotes! That shows this platform is taking off IMO. I am happy I spend money to invest in steem power and it was so cool to see my invest pay back when I exchanged my SBD for over $1000!
Steem is one of the only functional blockchains that is used for real-life purposes instead of just an asset or investment opportunity. Well done everyone!

Congrats ! Exactly my thought, even today I wrote a pretty similar post, where I mentioned that the best way to help Steemit grow is by creating value, because value makes the different in results.
You can check it here
I hope you get to 20 k in tne next 4 months !

I believe you are right in saying that many Steemians do support the creative efforts with crypto and this platform. While I cannot program or develop software, I do publish stories mostly of everyday life, many times with a humorous perspective. I enjoy recounting my "One Day at a Time" adventures in retirement and writing about them, and enjoying a laugh or two while I'm at it. And all I can hope for here on Steemit is that people see value in that. Good post.

Yea that happens to me too sometimes, usually you can just refresh the page and it will work. The steemit.com UI still has all sorts of bugs.

Hello @yabapmatt and congratulations on your success reaching followers on Steemit. I'm following your work and you are doing great job! I'm doing STEEMER.NET Project for STEEM (and later Android) which will support also Windows Upvote Bot option. I have posted details in presentation post here: https://steemit.com/investors-group/@cryptomonitor/steemer-net-steem-blockchain-transactor-for-windows-android-app-funding-update-243-1200-sbd-28-12-2017 . Would you consider to support it to? I'm available on Discord for discussion about STEEMER.NET ( cryptomonitor#0447 ). Thanks !
