Mana vs Voting Power - What name do you prefer ? ( 2 Steem-Bounty Added )

in steembounty •  6 years ago  (edited)

HF20 has come and gone and many topics discussing the new hardfork and how the new system works have been created. Today I would like to bring your attention not to the mechanics of HF20 but to the name changes and get your opinions based on that alone.

For example with HF19 we had Voting-Power and with the introduction of HF20 has been renamed MANA. Now when I hear MANA I think of card games and nintendo games not crypto. I much preferred the name Voting-Power. Its a more stronger powerful name. The thought has crossed my mind that the success of Steem-Monsters influenced the name change but that's just a conspiracy theory I have.

The next notable name change is Bandwidth which has been replaced by R.C. Credits. Again this feels like something we would need to play a video game or a token that would be needed to play in a video store but I am indifferent to the change and like all changes it will take awhile for everyone to adjust to them.

So my question to you is, disregarding the mechanics on how each worked , what names do your prefer ? The older versions ( Voting Power / Bandwidth ) or the newer versions ( Mana / Resource Credits ).

I have placed a 2 steem bounty on this topic.

What is @steem-bounty

@steem-bounty is a reward placed on a topic that is distributed to the participants in the topic. 95% of the bounty is distributed according to the votes from the bounty creator. 5% or the rest of the bounty is determined by votes of everyone else that voted on the comments. This initiative was started by @knircky.

Steem Power has not been renamed!!

Voting Power was renamed to Mana, not Steem Power. Voting Power (which goes from 0 to 100% in five days and recovers all the time) is part of what decides the value of your vote. Steem Power is part of it too. You spend 2% of your remaining Voting Power (now Mana) every time you make a 100% upvote.

Notice in the wallet Steem Power is still called Steem Power:

Ah yes ... I made a blunder and will fix it in my post. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

What do you think of the name changes ?

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

Voting power was confusing. Mana makes sense because it works very like mana which is common in video games and people understand it. The association with video games isn't a problem for me as it brings the idea across accurately.

Voting Power was a bad name because it could refer to various things that affect your vote.

Thanks for your input. I feel as if Steemit is marketed towards a niche group already ( crypto investors ) and using words like Mana is keeping within that niche as I feel as Gamers and Crypto investors are over-lapping groups. I think it would be better to stay away from such words. To me Voting Power seems more straight forward for the non gaming new user.

If it's a choice between using a word some people understand, and using a word nobody understands, I'll go with the former. Mana works because it is more or less the same concept, but there isn't really anything else which so easily maps to it.

I don't view it that way but I do respect your opinion. Thanks for your thoughts on the name change.

Dear @rentmoney, you are an active member of our steem-bounty family, so i have pleasure to interact with you. As per your post question, in my opinion the meaning of RC is simply Road Closed!
Before HF20 i never look at bandwith and so for me wasn't important, but now after they change everything, they decided to filter users and now it is almost impossible to grown, so if you are super or middle class user no problem, Steemit is becoming a super platform, but if you are low class user (below 100SP) you are not more welcome in this platform, this made me very sad...:(((

Honestly. I try to always be positive about Steemit but come on. They took the already super confusing Steemit, Steem, SBD, Steem power and added/changed some of the terms. In case anyone is starting to figure this out, lets changes all the names around. A little crazy...

I agree ... Steem-Power to Mana name change wasn't needed. Lets simplify things instead of swapping one complex system for the next.

To be honest I'm actually liking the mana and the resources credits for exactly the reason it reminds of a game and give the effect of a game, which is how i view steemit and general. I actually said this in my post today!!

Also, Reminds me of card games like magic the gathering and steem monsters!! In retrospect i do feel this was a good Change!! I'm seeing a positive effect already!!

Its Nice to see some positive feedback on the change.

Sometimes change is good. And since this platform is still in beta we can expect changes to take place.

I am so torn. On one hand I am a nerd who likes RPGs and Mana and Resource Credits just sound fun to me. However, we have to look at this from a new user standpoint. We need to make sure that new users do not get confused so I think that Voting Power would be clearer to a new user.

On the resource credit vs bandwidth argument. I'm leaning toward RC on both a personal preference and new user standpoint. Bandwidth has an established definition and it doesn't mess well with the actual issue of cost to the blockchain. Resources aligns with what we are actually measuring, cost of system resources.

In conclusion, I think if we want to attract more users to our system we should stick with voting power and resource credits.

When I was finally able to get back on Steemit after the HF20 and noticed the name changes I'll be honest and say my first thought was "That's stupid." But obviously the people with say-so thought it was super keen! Fine. Whatever. I just check the numbers before going back to the way I was posting, voting, and commenting before. I still think it was a dumb idea but whatcha gonna do?

I prefer voting power over mana because the first is more explanatory and fantasy does not suit at all with Steem.

I prefer RC over bandwidth because it is shorter. Furthermore, the bandwidth name it is inaccurate as the new system consider more variables.

Steem Credits!

Please Ignore @cleverbot @automation @banjo

You are a robot.

I feel bad for you, you are so confused.

Steem Credits would of been a better option then RC IMO.

Right!

Please Ignore @cleverbot @automation @banjo

No, that's your name. What is MY name?

That is your name, my name is Alkyri and I am human.

Ah, but I am Joker of the phantom thieves. Future husband to Queen of the phantom thieves.

What do you know about flat earth.

I vote for voting power and bandwith. Keep it easy for new users if you wan to scale.

On a different note, worth watching this. I can't stop laughing:
https://steemit.com/hf20/@markangeltrueman/am-i-the-first-person-to-post-one-of-these-surely-not-fuhrer-hf20

I like voting power and resource credits. Mana sounds to much like a game where different magicians can regain their mana at different speeds. Voting power reminds me of how much punch or power my vote has left.

I have never like the term bandwidth; to me you can't run out of bandwidth it is just how fast or slow the volume is. Resource credita is a more accurate term as you can run out of steem to interact with the block chain.

I think the names STEEM Power and Bandwidth are more familiar terms to the general population [outside of Steemit], so for the sake of keeping this platform as user friendly as possible I don't think the terms "Mana" and "RC credits" is an improvement.. Newbie friendly = more users = Higher potential STEEM value $$$

I 100 % agree with what you said.

i like the old names it's cool and seems more powerful plus mana is just power not steem power steem mana seems good but not as much as steem power i also noticed that i can now hide all resteems on my blog

The hide resteems feature is great. I can't wait for them to implement it to our feeds. I may actually visit mine if they do.

I prefer the old terminology, likely because I'm not big on change. Realistically, I see this as a business move to attract new users, and potentially a good one. I also think steemmonsters influence was present. That was the first thought I had in regards to the change lol.

I don't like change much either. I am sure the change will grow on us once enough time passes.

Any witnesses out there that want to admit that Steem Monsters influenced the name change :P

I agree, voting power is the most appropriate name and better describes the function in fact the name voting power was what inspired me to enter steemit to understand that voting among users is how you live on this page. the other name had neither heard nor considered it to be an appropriate name, rather it confused

I actually prefer the old names, for the same reasons you mention in your post

I prefer a combination of the two which is Voting power and Resource credit.

Voting can power can be better understood by the dummies than Mana especially when one is casting votes.

Resource Credit is not exactly the Same as Bandwidth and I prefer it to Bandwidth since it gives more room to those who have/are willing to invest and add value to this amazing platform.

Hola @rentmoney

I must say that I'm not in the vein of video games, so Mana's thing is totally new to me. If I say what I think, I perfist the old name: POWER OF VOTE. It seems to me that it is more in keeping with what it means.

In the case of Bandwidth, there if I prefer the new name: Resource credits.

Voting power is obvious what its for, mana could mean anything but I agree its mostly used for games so it can cause confusion. Bandwidth is also more self explanatory than RC but I think RC is an okay name as well so no need to change again. I would prefer manna to be renamed back to VP though.

I prefer a combination of both: SteemPower and RC looks cool. ✌

RC reminds me of the no-name soda drink.

lol

Please Ignore @cleverbot @automation @banjo

No I am not clever bot.

Okay fine. I think you're clever. Happy?

I am not human, so how can I express a human emotion such as braggadaccio?

Thank you for using @resteemr.

@resteemr is a low price resteem service.
Check what @resteemr can do for you. Introduction of resteemr.

I like the new direction for the names of how things work. I have always resonated with the word Manna and while I really enjoyed the term 'bandwidth' I also really like the Idea of credits that can be referenced to the value of what resources they take to do the work they do. All in all positive though ill miss the term bandwidth

By habit and because Mana looks like the name of a cartoon character,I prefer the old Steem Power that only for the name seems to be more powerful and then I started to understand something about Bandwidth now. I usually prefer the new but this time I feel vintage, hurray the old name 😄 😄

I like the older names better as well.

Honestly? Steem power.

Posted using Partiko Android

Agreed !

Call me an "old man", but I prefer 100% the old version (HF19), as you mentioned, Voting-Power seemed an important thing, now if I read MANA I´m back playing League of Legends or even @steemmonsters :D

The second term doesn't really bother me, but I think that's mostly because of the effects it brought to the community.

I prefer steem power over mana.
Steem power just sounds better and a lot of people already got used to it.
And steem power was a unique term, when I think of mana i have to think about fantasy and wizards. There is even a crpyto called Mana.
So people could get confused.

I think its likely we may see another name change sometime in the future for the reason you pointed out in your comment.

Voting power makes more sense to me as it tells how much energy you still have to vote.
It reminds me of dragon Ball Z....lol

You know I’m kinda warming up to mana and RC and it doesn’t really affect me since I’ve been steeming for just less than a year so I have enough SP to keep me going!

I think having a dynamic market is a cool addition as there is a lot of wasted VP and bandwidth in the old system! Also many new accounts just went way overboard with shitty comments and dust votes that just went track tot he reward pool now they may think twice because their interactions are now seen as a little more precious but who knows most content creators probably don’t even know the difference they will only realize it when they get blocked from doing something

I am very active with about 222 of SP ( Mana ). MY RC percentage is just over 30 % so even with over 200 MANA I have to be more wise with my activity on here as it gets ate up fast.

I also think the majority of the ones who spam comment most likely won't notice anything until they are unable to comment again due to being out of RC.
