JESUS CHRIST IS LIFE

My good Jesus He affirmed:

"I have come that they may have life, and have it in abundance"

The central core of Jesus' redemptive mission, says the apostle John, was to give life and life in abundance (Jn 10,10). This abundance does not consist of the number of days we spend in this world, not even of the royalties we may have. We can find that life in abundance is a life of prosperity, a life of success. We see, through the apostle, that the abundant life of Jesus is completely different from that thought.

When Jesus speaks of life in abundance: "He speaks of that new and eternal life which consists in communion with the Father, to which every man is freely called in the Son, by the power of the Sanctifying Spirit. life in such a way that all aspects and stages of human life fully meaning "(Evangelium vitae n 1).

Man can not deceive himself with earthly life, believing that in it is all joy, all fulfillment. Do not! The full realization of life is not here, but in the future life promised by the Lord. This future life is often forgotten and it is for this future reality, heaven, that I want to draw your attention.

Go through the Greek to make it easier to understand what the Evangelist John presents to us when he talks about Jesus coming to bring life, and life in abundance. There are three words of the New Testament with different meanings, which have been translated into Portuguese by a single word, called "life". In the Greek, she has three meanings. Without the necessary distinction of terms, you run the risk of not understanding the message of the Gospel.

Gospel in its originality

The first Greek word for life in Portuguese is "bios". In that case, it refers to life in the physical world. From there, we understand the other words derived from that concept, such as biology. "Bios" is everything that surrounds the physical world, that is, the duration of our physical life and also our moral conduct.

The second Greek word translated by life is "psuche". This word is also known as "soul." We see, in some books of psychology, also translated as "life of the soul". Especially in psychology, psuche refers to our thoughts, our feelings, everything that is in the field of our decision making.

The third and most important Greek word translated for life is "Zoé". This Greek word is used when it refers to God's own life, his incorruptible life, without beginning or end. Therefore, whenever Sacred Scripture speaks of the life that Jesus came to bring, it uses the word Zoé, and not Bios or Psuche. This implies saying that the life that Jesus came to bring was to Zoé, the life of God. For this reason: "Man is called to a fullness of life that extends far beyond the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in the participation of God's own life." The sublimity of this supernatural vocation reveals the greatness and the precious value of human life, even in its temporal phase.
