To understand what mercy is, we will begin in Luke 10: 30-37. There, Jesus uses a parable to answer a question from a lawyer about who his neighbor is:
Luke 10: 30-37
"Jesus answered and said, A man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him; and wounding him, they left, leaving him half dead. It happened that a priest descended that way, and when he saw him, he passed by. Likewise a Levite, arriving near that place, and seeing him, passed by. But a Samaritan, who was on his way, came near him, and seeing him, he was moved to mercy; and coming near, he bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and putting him on his mount, he took him to the inn, and took care of him. Another day when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the innkeeper, and said: Take care of him; and everything you spend more, I'll pay you when you return. Who, then, of these three seems to you to be the neighbor of the one who fell into the hands of the thieves? He said: The one who used mercy on him. Then Jesus said to him: Go, and do the same."
Compared to the priest and the Levite, the Samaritan refused to be indifferent to the half-dead traveler. Rather, he had compassion; He showed him mercy and helped him. Therefore, mercy is having compassion for someone; Help out of love without expecting something in return. And the Lord is rich in this. As in Ephesians 2 it characteristically says:
Ephesians 2: 4-6
"But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, even while we were dead in sins, gave us life together with Christ (by grace you are saved), and together with him he raised us up, and also made us to sit in heavenly places with Jesus Christ "
What gave us salvation was not our courage or what we could have done but the grace, love and mercy of God. Like the one that the thieves left half dead, so we were dead in iniquities. Religion, philosophy and all that can not help us.
They passed by as well as the Levite and the priest. However, the Lord "WHO IS RICH IN MERCY, FOR HIS GREAT LOVE WITH WHOM HE HAS LOVED US, EVEN WHEN WE WERE DEAD IN INIQUITIES, LIVED US TOGETHER WITH CHRIST" He extended His hand and "He delivered us from the power of darkness and we moved to the kingdom of His beloved Son "(Colossians 1: 12-13). As 1 Peter 1: 3 says:
1 Peter 1: 3
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy made us be reborn for a living hope, for the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."
And Romans 5: 8
"But God shows His love for us, in that while still sinners, Christ died for us"
We were dead He was full of love, mercy and compassion. He extended His hand and vivified us. In spite of being unworthy he made us worthy. Even though we were sinners, he made us righteous. Even though we were his enemies he reconciled us to him. Even though we were in the kingdom of darkness, he moved us to the kingdom of His beloved Son. Certainly, how great is His grace, love, and mercy for each one of us personally.
