SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE
By the end of the lessons, the pupils should be able to:
i. Define Food
ii. Name the different types of food
iii. Mention the classes of food
iv. Mention the importance and functions of food.
WHAT IS FOOD?
Food is what we eat to keep our body healthy and to sustain our living. It gives us energy for daily activities.
TYPES OF FOOD
The type of food we eat can be described as:
- Cereals or grains: they are rice, beans,maize,cowpeas, millet,guinea corn etc.
- Roots or tubers: they are yam,cassava,cocoyam,sweet potato etc
- Vegetables: they are okro,tomato,onion etc
- Oils and fats such as palm oil or groundnut oil,butter,margarine etc.
- Meat such as chicken,fish,beef,pork etc
- Fruits such as orange,mango,pineapple,guava,banana etc
ClASSES OF FOOD
food are generally classified into six groups according to their uses in the body.
Class of food: Examples of food 1.Carbohydrate: rice,yam,wheat,cassava,millet,potato,cocoyam,sugar etc
2.Protein: milk beans, soya beans, fish, eggs, melon, meat etc
3.Fats: palm oil,margarine,groundnut oil,butter and animal fat etc
- Vitamins:vegetable like carrot,okro,tomatoes,cabbage,lettuce,garden egg,animal fat etc
- Mineral salt: dried fish,vegetable,fruits,milk,liver,red oil etc
- Watee: water melon, water leaf, soft drink etc
IMPORTANCE OF FOOD
- Energy: the foods that gives us energy are carbohydrate, fats and oils
- Body building: they are food that help us in building our body e.g protein
- Repairing purpose: food helps in repairing worn out tissues in our body e.g vitamins
- Growth and developement: foid helps us to grow and develope properly e.g protein
- Warmth: food that keeps the body warm e.g fat and oils
- Good health: food makes us healthy
FUNCTIONS OF FOOD
- CARBOHYDRATE: they are food which gives us energy
- PROTEIN: they are food for growth and repairs
- FATS AND OILS: they are food that gives energy and protection to delicate parts
4: VITAMINS AND MINERAL SALTS: foods that protect our body - WATER: it serves as a solvent and transporter of food nutrients
