We can say that baptism is important mainly as an act of love and faith in God, as the beginning of a life marked by Christian values, and as a gateway to a community of Christian brothers united by the same belief.
At the time of our birth, we do not belong to any religious faith or belief. Although our parents can profess it, they must, usually in most religions, perform some traditional ritual in which formally begins our life of faith.
According to the Bible, Christian baptism is simply a step of obedience, a public proclamation of the faith that one professes in Christ only for salvation. Christian baptism is important because it is a step of obedience - a public declaration of faith in and commitment to Christ, an identification with the death of Christ, His burial, and His resurrection.

Matthew 28: 19-20

Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I assure you that I will be with you always, until the end of the world.
