It's such a beautiful day the Lord has made. God bless us all as we take heed to these words.......
And Jesus answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her' (Luke 10: 41 -42)
Question: If you are asked, 'What is one needful thing in life? What would be your answer?
I believe, the answer would be different for different people as our situation and circumstance are not the same. For some people, it's money, others, it's job, car, health, a university degree, an opportunity, a career, and so on. Nevertheless, it's a question you and I will have to answer for ourselves individually as long as we have breath in us and see each new day. So what is this one needful thing? And that is the focus for our devotion today.
The Lord Jesus used a life situation in the home of Martha and Mary to bring us to the answer to that question.
He comes to Bethany, and was welcomed by Martha to her home. And as it was expected, to have in your house such an august guest like the Prophet from Nazareth, the miracle worker, the most influential teacher and supposedly the Messiah and the Son of God, the pressure and the trouble one would go through just to make sure everything is alright and taste good. From sitting arrangement to food to serve, from decorations to drinks. Not forgetting that everything has to be on time, and not just for the visitor, but also with his entourage, 12 of them. I sympathize with Martha, for I have witnessed it myself, when I have such visitors in my home and my wife has to attend to them.
Martha had another problem too. Her younger sister left everything on her to do, while she took her seat by Jesus to listen to his teaching.
Oh, poor Martha. And when she couldn't take it anymore, she took the case to Jesus for sympathy and arbitration. But the Lord shocked Martha (and me, I don't know about you) with His answer. That, why was she troubling herself, overwhelming herself, and worrying herself for nothing. But only one thing is needful as far as He is concerned. And her sister Mary has falling in line with that needful thing - the Word of the Lord. And that if Mary live by it, she will become the good person that God wants to see (paraphrased).
And let me shock you: we are not told whether Jesus told Mary afterwards to go and help Martha, or Mary got up to help her (may be she did) but we are certain when Martha brought the food, the Lord ate them. That is unfair! Don't mind me, just let us learn the underlying truths.
Scripture declared that man shall not live by food alone, but need every word that proceed from the mouth of God (Matth 4: 4). The very truth the Lord was pointing Martha to. So all the wahalas of life we strain ourselves to go through, to earn a decent living are all good, all the struggles and troubles we face in life to live life are all good. The Lord does not condemn us. But all that minus the Word of God, only feed the body which perishes in the grave and comes to nothing. So while we toil and work and fight to be successful, prosperous and great, if we fail to connect with God, and have a meaningful relationship and nurturing fellowship with Him, we have missed the one needful thing in life.
Martha troubled herself to work and serve, while Mary relaxed and listened to the word of God and in the end, the one who spent time with God and heard the word of God, in Heaven's perspective, was judged the best - the best use of time, life and resource.
The wisest man, Solomon, in his old age, said, 'Hear the conclusion of the matter, man's main purpose on earth, is to know God, worship Him and serve Him. Every other thing is secondly (Eccl 12: 13, paraphrased)
Let's us therefore abide and live by this truth. the one needful thing in life, from God's perspective, not man, or the world or your own perspective.
So as you go through the day and live life, remember the words of Jesus, and take counsel and avail yourself to seek and live by it.
May you have understanding from today and may the Lord cause you to have right priority as you live each day of your life.
And may the Lord bless you and commend you in Jesus name. Amen
pray this prayer
Thank you Father for your truth given in grace and love to us. Some times Lord, we don't get it and other times Lord we get confused. Continue to give us clarity and direction. Where we struggle to accept your truth in faith, cause grace and faith to abound to us. From today, Lord, may we be like Mary, but also knowing the difference between when to be like Mary and when to be like Martha in living life and dealing with life issues. Thank you Father in Jesus name. Amen
May I choose always what Heaven consider the good part in life in Jesus name. Amen
Meditate on today's word and use it to pray
