Biblically, there were 2 separate times declared as a New Year. The New Year is translated as Rosh Hashanah, which actually occurs in the 7th month of the Biblical calendar. Nisan/Abib marks Spring which was also declared the beginning of the Year.

The 1st of January 2018 = 14th Tevet 5778 (Just to confuse you, that is the 4th month of the civil year or 10th month of the Biblical year)
