Matthew 21:1-11
Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose [them] and bring [them] to Me.
"And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them."
All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:
"Tell the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.' "
So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them.
They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set [Him] on them.
And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread [them] on the road.
Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: "Hosanna to the Son of David! 'Blessed [is] He who comes in the name of the LORD!' Hosanna in the highest!"
And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, "Who is this?"
So the multitudes said, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee."

This a day that is commonly termed as palm sunday world widely recognised and commemorated as far as religion is concerned. Its termed as palm sunday because it so happened one day during Jesus' life and mission on earth that is a week prior to his crucifixion. He revealed himself publicly to the crowd of people in Jerusalem exhibiting that he is their messiah and king, one who they were waiting for.

According to the above portion of scripture. Jesus Christ is indeed a great prophet who is not limited by time and space in that he instructed his two desciples to get him a donkey from a certain village in a particular area, well elaborated to them how they were to acquire it and even how to overcoming a certain resistance of some few people that were to question them of what they were doing.

The people hailed at him with shouts of triumph, laid their clothes down along his path, cut down branches laid them down as well. This was such a great prophetic action in the sense that his presence and arrival in such a time meant that all their burdens were going to be lifted from their shoulders. It was such a warm welcome given to the king of kings and this i believe pleased him greatly and in return flooded hope in the hearts of people. Though many misunderstood him in that they thought he had showed up with a mission of liberating them from the Roman oppression.

The people exhibited humility as they laid down their clothes on the ground for him to pass on while ridding on the donkey's back. This was a significant act that speaks or reminds us that God gives us grace when we are humble but opposes us when we act in pride.

People became so agitated and trembled with excitement due to the fact that the Joy of the lord had flooded their hearts, as they kept on praising him with shouts of victory. This reveals something very incredible to us today whereby when we praise God with a sincere heart we reap joy from operating in his will by worshiping and praising him. This also means that Shouting to the lord is a biblical thing that a believer ought to do in the course of praising and worshiping God.

Why did Jesus use a donkey on this event and not any other animal.

A donkey is a lowly animal which is also termed as a beast of burdens due to the fact that it is over used for the hard tasks suchas carrying people's luggage and also used in agriculture.

Back to the question. Jesus used a donkey because he wanted to fulfill Zecharia's prophesy

Zechariah:9.9
" Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He [is] just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.

Therefore he fulfilled this when he triumphantly entered Jerusalem while ridding on a donkey.

The other reason was that Jesus Christ wanted to identify with the common people. A donkey is believed to be a lowly animal which was commonly used by the poor people of that time whereas a horse was believed to be for kings and also used in war. So by opting to use a donkey he wanted to fit in the congregation of the poor people of that time so that he could effectively minister grace to them without them feeling so inferior before him.

A donkey is a symbol of peace. His ridding on a donkey implied that he had come to Jerusalem in peace. This seals up his identity that he is indeed a prince of peace.

Amen! Glory to our King who is gentle and humble in heart (Mtt. 11:29)! So unlike anyone else! Amen! Jesus was worshipped LOUDLY when He made His triumphal entry. He told the Pharisees who wanted His disciples to not be so loud that even the rocks will cry out if they didn't! Hallelujah! And when He comes again in glory He will be welcomed by His people worshipping Him again. Right now the Holy Spirit is raising up a worship movement to welcome back the King of Kings! Praise God! So good to be in His kingdom!
