Keeping Steemit Clean: One Year Later

in steemcleaners •  7 years ago  (edited)

On August 23rd it was one year since the introduction of @steemcleaners. And what a year it has been for us!

Did you know @steemcleaners is one of the oldest running community initiatives, even pre-dating community groups such as Curie?

We want to thank the community for the support they have given us the past year. A special thanks goes out to @arhag for his recent delegation. We also want to thank everyone who takes the time to stop by and upvote our posts as well as those who drop by steemit.chat to report abuse.

Growing pains.

@cheetah

@cheetah has been a busy kitty cat. The operating costs have increased, just as the number of users posting daily has increased. @cheetah now posts daily logs to help offset the $100+ per day operation costs. Please consider upvoting her logs to help keep her running!

Community Presence

Recent developments forced @steemcleaners to ask some supporters to not up-vote our daily logs to keep them off the trending page. Read some of the discussion between @transisto and @anyx here.

Beginning in May we had upvotes from 250+ members of the community on each post. Sometimes posts received up-votes from 350-400 members of the community.

Since July 10th we have made an effort to keep the reports off the trending page to avoid having them downvoted, and while this has succeeded, it has also had some negative effects for both the community & @steemcleaners.

Visibility

There are new users that have no clue who we are or what we do as a group. They are surprised to find our comments on their posts and don't see us a 'voice' representing the community. Users who don't know about #steemitabuse are floundering looking for support to tackle abuse on their own. Many resorting to writing posts that are not being seen.

Funding

The goal of @steemcleaners is not profit. Payouts received from posts and comments serve two purposes.

  • Steem Power received gives our downvotes weight.
  • SBD received is redistributed to the community:
    • SP is awarded to those who find and report abuse to @steemcleaners
    • SBD is paid out to members of @steemcleaners who spend hours every day working to log reports, find abuse, monitor chat, and deter abuse.

Members of our group work long hours -- effectively full time jobs -- and the rewards they receive are substantially less than what they deserve for the hours they contribute to this project. Additionally, the entire community is able to receive the same (or even more!) rewards, should you help out.

If you appreciate what we do, consider visiting the blogs of individual members listed at the end of the post, and showing your support. Several of our members are running as witnesses, please consider voting for them here!

Keep in mind you have 10 full powered votes per day: consider using just 1 of the 10 to help combat abuse, whether it be by downvoting plagiarists, or by upvoting our posts or comments so we can better help serve the community. All of the reward is being distributed to anyone fighting abuse!

Self Voting

With the loss of support from the community we are currently self-upvoting comments at 2% and @adm has graciously chipped in to upvote at 1.5%. “Self voting” is sometimes considered controversial, however, keep in mind that the “self” that is receiving this reward is actually anyone in the community fighting abuse -- it could even be you getting the reward, should you help.

We are actively looking for alternate means of supporting this project (and if you have ideas, feel free to comment below). Until then we will continue as we have; the alternative isn't something we would like to think about.

Delegation

Have some Steem Power you aren’t using and want to help keep Steemit Clean? No delegation is too small!

Looking To The Next Year

Updating the Abuse Guide

In the next week or two we will be posting an updated Abuse Guide to incorporate the changes that have taken place in the community and within @steemcleaners.

The Spaminators (@spaminator)

The Spaminators was formed with the help of other members of the community and @patrice. They will be working proactively to discourage comment spam. @steemcleaners is working with The Spaminators and @steemcleaners will still be taking reports of comment spam from the community.

Introducing #ask-patrice

You can find the #ask-patrice channel on Discord. Have questions about @steemcleaners, @spaminator, or other abuse? Need advice on how much to quote or formatting? Ask @patrice!

Questions will be responded to as @patrice is available.

Active @steemcleaners

We’ve added two new members to the ranks. Please bear with them as they learn the ropes! Welcome @logic & @neuromancer!

First Year Statistics

These are actually short one day. Doh!

Just over 400 Steemians have participated in reporting abuse to @steemcleaners. We want to thank them all for taking the time to do it!

yes!
you are right boss
Namaste :)

Namaste from Bulgaria :p

Thank you! We appreciate the support!

Thank you for all your hardwork @steemcleaners. This is just my second week and you have my support. I didnt know we have only 10 full power upvote per day. I have been upvoting good content everyday and discovered my upvote is inly 5% now. But I will certainly keep you in mind in the future. Keep up the good work.

It rebuilds about 20% a day. Might be a good idea to take a few days off of voting to get your power back up. Once you hit 1m vests (around 490SP) you get a slider and can divide up your votes by %.

Thanks for the info.

Redarding the discussion between @transisto and @anyx, concerning the daily stemmcleaner reports on the trending page, the solution might be weekly steemcleaner reports. They are favorable for both sides. They give steemcleaners some visibility without overloading the trending page.

Thank you for the great work and keep it up!

We used to do weekly logs last year when there weren't many case in a week and we had people funding steemcleaners directly by donations. Back then 100-200 cases a week were the norm. Now we do hundreds a day. Weekly logs would need to be split up into like 8-10 pieces and/or it would severely cut our funding.

Thanks for reaching out to me. Ok, let’s see if I can bring a little more precision in my suggestion :-)

  1. Do the daily reports, where every case is listed.
  2. Do a weekly report on the statistics with a link to the daily reports, plus e.g. 10 of the worst cases or current trends in plagiarism/spam/scam.

Now, the daily reports stay of the trending page, but weekly reports are allowed to enter the trending section, resulting in visibility without an overload.

We already do that. Well minus the top 10 worse cases/current trends stuff. Not sure how to even do that. Trends change almost daily. One day there is a ton of spam, next bunch of photo plg, next comment spam. Never know what it will be.

Perfect! Maybe it's possible to convince @transisto of that idea. If not, he might be open to a monthly report.

It is our responsibility to make it cleans likes we clean our home. Thanks for sharing.

Members of our group work long hours -- effectively full time jobs

I wish it were a full time job. OSHA would force me to work fewer hours.

You and me both!

Cheetah does good work i'll upvote it when i can.

Keeping this site clean is important for it's success, in my opinion. Good work everyone.

i was asked to nominate for an award within my circle and to my dismay i cannot vote for you guys. the people of steemcleaners are heros because they fight behind the scenes quietly. i don't think they get the recognition they deserve. so for as much as it counts, i support you guys.

Thanks @torico!

Excellent work ... keep it up.

Follow me @Yehey
Thank you.

Really appreciate what Steemcleaner is doing. Overall, it's doing a really good job at keeping Steemit in order.

✅👍🏻थैंक्स for share

Nice post 8-)

I am with you

thank you

gz!

Thank you for helping keep this place clean and honest! A lot of behind the scenes work that sometimes goes unacknowledged, but very much appreciated.

This is the way it should be @steemcleaners ! Good job!

Thanks for the great work.

I was suprise by the statistics you show here, you've done a great job, thank you for the effort , you got my support, hoping you will have more post.

Follow for Follow 😊

You do realize that isn't a good idea to post here? Please don't spam.

Thanks for sharing the info @steemcleaners.

I am impressed that even in a post like this which call out on spammers, there are a couple if not more spammers' comments. People can be tough to deal with and you have my support and sympathy doing that.

With the increase number of steemers, I am sure there will be an increase in abusers as well. It is the responsibility of every good steemer to notify you about any abuse they see and I am sure they will do what they can.

However, I am not sure if you read @jerrybanfield post Meet Steem's #1 Author! I believe people cheating the system to gain money are abusers of steemit and its members too, but are they considered as such by @steemcleaners?

Thanks again :)

The problem with the cheating that @jerrybanfield wrote about, is that is technically permissible, because of the recent HF19. IMHO it has been a disaster. It was meant to share more of the rewards with minnows, but instead of this we have seen even more plundering of the reward pool by those tricky enough to game the system. This is why we have to be very very careful who we vote for as Steem witnesses.

Therefore I would vote for the hardworking people @steemcleaners suggest over somebody who is only out to pimp their profile, claiming to actively do something for the community, when their only concern is to garner more followers so that earn more.

@leoplaw, Many thanks for the comment and explanation.

I am new to steemit so I don't know much about the earlier days. But I sure am very aghast with what I have been seeing from such people.

Although I don't really know what a witness does, I believe they have lots of power in steemit politics, money and regulations. So I agree with you that voting for clean people that were suggested by other clean people as witnesses will serve the platform and its users better.

Thanks again :)

Just go to your favourite search engine, I recommend, StartPage.com or DuckDuckGo.com, and search on the following terms.

Steemit witness
Steemit witness voting

Since you appear to be interested in how things work on Steemit, I highly recommend you follow the account of @paulag as she does statistical analysis of the Steemit data so that you are properly informed about what is really happening on Steemit, rather than listening to the gossip and rumour.

Many thanks @leoplaw for the suggestions and info.

I really appreciate it :D

Some have a lot of power others like myself do not. I have accumulated some by posting and working hard to earn it.

Also speaking of witness you can support your steemcleaners who are witnesses by voting for them too. I know @anyx @pfunk and myself are witnesses. Have to type my name in but you can vote here https://steemit.com/~witnesses

It is always encouraging to see people like yourself as good examples of achieving by hard work. It gives us, minnows, empowerment and a model to follow that is better than those get-rich-fast schemers

Many thanks for the reply and suggestions.

Good luck as witnesses. You have my support. Keep up the good work :D

excelente trabajo, sigue así y espero que tengas muchos años más en esta comunidad

Awesome stats and necessary service! Thanks so much for the hard work to keep this place tidied up!

Thank you guys!

Good to known and good work. Thank you for sharing.

very good post !

Good job

Hi may i know how to be a part of steemcleaners?

You can start by going to https://steemit.chat/channel/steemitabuse and hanging out to learn some of what goes on. You can also just submit abuse you find to https://steemit.chat/channel/steemcleaners-linkdrop

good job

Damn I didn't even know we could downvote on here!

Now that I see the few other icons I'll try to do my own bit as well to get rid of spam and plagarism. The more we push each other for high quality and original content the better off this site and everyone will be.

I see your still low rep so watch who you flag or wait until your rep is higher. Someone with a higher rep and steem power could easily put your account into negative rep still.

Ouch I wouldn't want that, thanks for the tip!

Beep beep. Hi @psychastronaut!
You have used tip! in your comment - that`s my magic word for sending tips ;)
Click here if you wish to learn more!

I have reported one or two times, by mentioning the name of the @steemcleaners or someone else, I don't remember for sure, but as I am still new to the platform, only one month old, I haven't read much of your posts. And I am not confident if this is the way of reporting, I mean, is it enough mentioning your or one of the community member's name such as @patrice or @pfunk in the comment box next to the abusive content? Or is there any other better way of reporting? I can't downvote, because I am a minnow, but want to help.
Few days ago, I noticed a case of fraud/theft. One person eluded another to transfer 40 SBD into his account, and the person was a minnow, and could do nothing but just write a post about it, I wanted to help, but didn't know much either except resteeming his post.

Mentions have been broke for awhile so we don't reply on those anymore. Best bet is to use https://steemit.chat/channel/steemcleaners-linkdrop

You can Follow me for the latest Technology Related News and Articles.. Thank You...

Thank you @steemcleaners! I'll make a point of 100% some of your posts... such as this one.
I also take time out and SP to downvote obvious comment spamming. I figure there are excellent projects such as yours and @spaminator, but if as many of us get involved on this, we can make a difference.
Thank you again. Keep up the good work.

Steem Power received gives our downvotes weight.
SBD received is redistributed to the community:
SP is awarded to those who find and report abuse to @steemcleaners
SBD is paid out to members of @steemcleaners who spend hours every day working to log reports, find abuse, monitor chat, and deter abuse.

Success is always for @steemcleaner how a very good system works with unusual account cleaning purposes. this possibility will have a better impact to avoid unnatural gaps and actions of account users so that they may respect and comply with the terms and conditions of law in the Steemit, Success and Keep Steemit communities. @ponpase

Awesome! Thank you!

Thank you for being a monitor for all. Keep steemit all the time from the littering rubbish and try to destroy the steam.

honesty is its own reward

..follow you..upvoted..resteeemed..keep on rocking!!!..top job!!..

nice post.....

wow, you deserve our respect! This is amazing to realize you've been up and running for a year!

I just flagged my first one today and it's the first time I have come across this personally.
This guy wanted me to read his post and I was surprised to see that he has copied my dearest friend @enazwahsdarb post completely.
The whole post and putted his own name on it.

This is the link. Makes me so angry that people plays copy cats and on my friend 😠😠

Thank you for this and helping steemit be what it is today. Without it it most likely would have been taken over by spammers a long time

This post was very informative thank you for sharing
you have my upvote
Keep smiling, reading, writing and voting!!!

Abuse Type ---------- Times Reported
Quote Formatting----------- 6

(okay not an exact quote)

I do not understand this? There really are not that many ways to make a quote. You can use the >space thing to make a quote, but also by using the quotation symbols "". Or is that wrong?

Where is the "Abuse Guide", (i am guessing that since you did not make it a link, you, (the person making this post) could no longer find it) there are over 20228 posts on @steemcleaners page, How can I find the Guide? Someone really needs to Update the Steemit Drop down menu and Create a place for the Guides to be centralized. The FAQ's for steemit are on the drop down menu, just make a new tab below the FAQ one that says GUIDES, make it easy on the new people. (EDIT - Found the Guide, unlucky me the random post I picked was a part 2 to 9/1/17, and that did not list the links.)

The one and only bot that seems to be of use and that does any good is @cheetah Bot. Any plans to start cleaning up some of these other useless bot? Is there really really a need for a bot that only goes meep. It is spam, it does not add to the value of a post. And meep bot is not the only """""Bad/Useless Bot"""" out there.

Still could someone explain how quoting something can be an abuse by simply not formatting it in a dictatorial fashion if that is really happening?

"Abuse" probaly isnt' the best term for that just like unverified identity isn't really abuse. When there was a lot less abuse on steemit we also tried to point people in the right direction on things like sourcing photos and how to properly quote and provide sources for those quotes. These things were also logged under PCIS for picutres and quote formatting for giving guidence for properly quoting with markdown.
