I work in the public education system in Japan and I want to expose the students I work with to exciting cutting-age technology and scientific developments. If possible, I would really like to expose students to stories about young teenagers around the world who are developing world-changing ideas, organizations, technology, etc.
I have a forum here that I can use as I see fit. I write short, weekly articles that use pictures to generate student interest, written text to convey information, and Youtube links, etc. to encourage students to learn more through independent study. I post these articles on the English bulletin boards I have been granted use of at the schools I work in.
Being that my knowledge of current technologies and the young people who are making an impact on our world is limited, I am looking for suggestions from all of you. What do you think are some of the most interesting, important, and relevant technologies being developed at this moment, and who do you think are some of the most influential adolescents of the past five years?
I hope to use your suggestions to broaden students’ horizons, expose them to ideas and stories they might otherwise not have access to, and hopefully prepare them for the future. All thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated!
I usually don't link in the comments sections on posts, but this kid is pretty amazing and is on to some Tesla-like stuff, apparently. I think Japanese kids would be blown away if they understood what they could really do, in spite of the ムリ mentality that sometimes is perpetuated in school settings.
Thanks for the interesting post!

I would say the world is getting much smaller. Maybe have your students work online with a team of students in other counties. There are different work ethics, thought processes, and 24 hr project development cycle.

Thank you for your suggestion. I would love to do something like this, and maybe I can find a way to in the future, but my experience so far has been that computers in schools over here are very limited and the time that students can spend on them is too, so I don't think I will be able to set up an internet based interactive activity like this. It is unfortunate. In addition, I am only an assistant language teacher, so I can't implement large activities without the consent of the main classroom teachers and their supervisors. Right now, the best I can do is hope that my bulletin boards will catch the eyes of a few students, and open their eyes to a world that they didn't know was out there.
