Steemit - come for the money, stay for the people...steemCreated with Sketch.

Wrong pitch

Having spent three days in Amsterdam at Steemfest, I realise that I’ve been pitching Steem and Steemit all wrong.

I’ve been pitching Steemit as a platform that rewards people (financially) for posting, commenting and voting on the site. This certainly has an appeal. Using the blockchain and the concept of mining to pay people for their social interaction is a potentially revolutionary concept. I’ve no doubt that in 20 years time, we will look back to the days of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as the days when people gave away their attention and ideas to fill the coffers of company shareholders. We will look back at ourselves like we were all bat-shit crazy!

However, the concepts and the ideas behind Steem and Steemit are not what make the platform special. What makes it special are the people that are attracted to those concepts and ideas. This weekend I got to mingle with some of those people.

Biggest asset

Attending Steemfest, was like attending an event for well-funded revolutionaries. It was an opportunity to listen and seek to better understand some of the bright minds that I’ve come across on Steemit. My only regret was not having enough time. Not enough time with those that I spoke time. Not enough time to speak to everyone.

I came away with the conclusion that the biggest asset Steem has is its community. As @andrarchy correctly states in his recent video, 'it’s the diversity that makes this community unique. Not superficial diversity but “real” diversity of ideas'. With an audience of people are incentivised to listen and respond to in an intelligent and respectful way.

Steemit revival

For me, Steemfest has really brought Steemit alive once more. It reminded me of when the introduceyourself tag first started doing the rounds. The site came alive with a myriad of different faces giving a glimpse of themselves in an honest and open way. Only Steemfest was better than a tag. You could verify what you were seeing was real and get a real sense of who people were as human beings.

High bar

The event organisation and attention to detail was second-to-none. @roelandp deserves the utmost kudos for organising this. When we were told that the $144 was a quarter of the per head price, I’d initially dismissed it as marketing patter. I was wrong. It was evident that no expense was spared putting this event on. It made the occasion even more memorable. The bar is set really high for any future Steemfest events!

No plan, no agenda

When I told people that I was going to Steemfest, they gave me a slightly side-wards look.

Their expression said it all, “Why the hell would you do that?”

My response was, “Just to see.”

I had no real expectations from Steemfest, no plan, no agenda.

I just wanted to see. Like the July 4th payout, the money feels “real” when you see it in your bank. The people become that bit more real when you the 'whites of their eyes' and the glint of their smile.

Totally immersed

I’d invited my sister, @ak2020 to come along with me. She was afterall the PR guru in the family. This kind of event was more up her street than mine. If worse came to worse, and Steemfest was a complete wash-out, at least we could spend some quality time in Amsterdam fleshing out ideas that our lives in London hadn’t afforded us the time to do.

Or so I thought. In truth we spent the whole time immersed in all things Steem and Steemit, most importantly the people. It was an uplifting experience.

I’d like to thank everyone that was so generous with their time at Steemfest. I learned a lot, laughed a lot, listened a lot and didn’t sleep much! A perfect weekend in Amsterdam.

Shout outs

I literally spoke to more people than I could possibly list sensibly in one post. I valued every interaction. However as this post is about "the people", its only right to give a few shoutouts:

@svk @steemrollin – the first two people I spoke to when I arrived on Friday night. So knowledgable yet so down-to-earth
@saramiller @everlove – the love and enthuasism that the both of you radiate is very infectious!
@kevinwong @andrarchy - more than orcas, really great guys. Only wish I had a chance to hang out with you two more.
@knozaki2015 – man, you are funnier than advertised. I now have a stash of euros under my pillow (for a raining day) thanks to your sage advice!
@terrybrock – I think you’re onto something with your training video ideas. Welcome to the platform, I look forward to reading your posts.
@mammasitta – thanks for the relationship advice! Enjoy your travels but do try to blog!
@fairytalelife – really glad I got to meet you person. Would have kicked myself if I hadn't. Pity we couldn't chat for longer!
@heiditravels - slightly surreal experience bumping into you the hotel elevator, although I feel like I'd travelled the world with you already through your blogs!
@qeysolutions @cultuurfort – welcome to the platform. Glad you came over and introduced yourselves.
@ottodv – really good speaking to you and sharing ideas.
@daniel.errey - I never thought I'd be chatting about Damage at Steemfest. Such a cool dude.
@rea @ezzy - I hope we get to see each other again at a London meet-up.
@allyummyfood - having sampled your truffles, I'm definitely looking forward to tasting more of your food!!
@timsaid - you're so great to be around, feel like I've known you for years!
@furion - really looking forward to where you go with SteemSports, I think you're onto a winner there!
@guerrint - so genuine. Essential Friday night viewing for so long, you're exactly as you come across in your videos!
Not forgetting... @onceuponatime, @dan-atstarlite, @mrs.steemit, @roadscape, @anyx, @ned, @roelandp, @ikigai, @meister, @opheliafu, @beanz, @burning, @(hilarious dude in the rocket chat t-shirt), @ballinconscious, @wingz, @chris4210, @razvanelul and so many more Steemians I had the pleasure of interacting with and seeing... Also a big shout out to Charlotte at the Volkshotel, for sparing me another night of going head-to-toe with @ak2020! You’re a legend!

a lot of us feel our steemit love rejuvenated by this fest.
I feel that this time it's not the high of payouts but something different, the nice energy of discovering a new good friend. this is ought to stay with us longer if not forever.
That's how i feel these days!
Glad to have met you and as I said, you set a high bar for classy, fit, funny and tall [ i might try to live up in the first three categories, unfortunately the later, as I said to you, it's not much to be done haha]

Really good to meet you too. Thanks for the kind words. I look forward to spending more time with you at the next event!

yeah, some people don't believe me but i'm rather shy + my hearing is not the best [ to say the least ] and you are in intimidating guy!! but Steemfest2017 will be the year of courage so i'm looking forward to it!!

was great having you and your sister here nanzo! thanks for coming from londra! great to see the bottom picture without any photoshops :)

Absolutely! I could not echo this sentiment more. Our community is one of the best I have ever known.

Peep the comments on the thread where @sharingeverybite and @shenanigator got stranded on their way home:

There is so much love and support in this group of people; it blows my mind. Thank you for coming and thank you for participating!

Thanks! Its great we have you in an official capacity also. Look forward to what you bring to the party!

Resteemed

Glad that you could make it and enjoyed yourself! Hope to catch you at the next one as well! Cheers! :)

Great meeting you. It's a shame we couldn't go more in depth. But hey, I'm sure I'll see you in London at some point.

Some interesting observations, I had a few of the same.

Hey @wingz - really wanted to spend more time with you & sorry about the mix-up over the cab to the airport. Will buy you a drink when we meet next!

No worries :) Looking forward to it, we seemed to have a pretty big UK community at Steemfest alone. Maybe an event in the new year.

I resteemed this ( we should separate from our Blog posts though )
because I love that title ! I came for the fun and stay for the people because this community is more special than I thought and even imagined ! Lov to all !

Heya @nanzo-scoop,

Wonderful, lovely guy you are. Always smiling and so easy going! Was so great to finally meet you and hope we will see each other again in London sometime. :)

Yeah, we should definitely arrange something. There are too many London-based Steemians not to meet-up.

You are a true gentleman and it was such pleasure meeting you and your lovely sister for a too short chat. I will be back blogging soon but my 91 years young mother, more like a 4 year old needs my full attention .

I agree

Awesome post Nanzo! I really enjoyed the reat!

Well done for attending and posting - timing was not good for me. I was in Amsterdam on October 1 as it was.

I do like this line (apologies for the edit I mad)

I’ve no doubt that in 20 years time, we will look back to the days of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as the days when people gave away their attention and ideas to fill the coffers of company shareholders. We will look back at ourselves like we were all bat-shit crazy!

Well said and Steem on.

I almost didn't attend. However I'm glad I was able. Hopefully you'll be able to make the next one.

Ey Nanzo, it was nice to meet you and talk about Spanish curation :) btw what is wrong with my eyes on the first pic? I kind of look like a maniac-psicopat. I have to stop making funny faces deff

a friendly psycho maybe?! :D

Ahh @gargon! I'd forgotten your Steemit handle. I will definitely support your stuff as promised.

Yes that picture does not do you justice! (Don't worry folks, he is safe to approach despite the crazy-eyed look in the photo!! LOL...)

HAhahaahhahahah

Nice meeting you! Dude in rocket chat t-shirt is @rocket.chat ;-)

Ahh... @rocket.chat (makes sense!) - it was a real pleasure chatting to the both of you!

@nanzo-scoop this sounds like it was absolutely amazing hope them dates for next years ones are out soon so I can make my plans to get to it! really good read man :)

Great to meet you, I'm glad you enjoyed your full immersion into SteemFest!

Likewise, really good chatting with you. If you do another Midlands meet-up, let me know. My wife is originally from Coventry so we have a ready-made excuse to travel up. It would be great to meet @cryptofunk too!

Definitely, I said I'd give myself 2 weeks off after SteemFest and then start planning a meet-up for January/February.

It was really great meeting you @nanzo-scoop. Your post hits the nail head. I'm working on a similar post now about the common denominator of those who I met at SteemFest and ideas for the future state of Steemit.

It was a pleasure speaking to you too. I look forward to reading your post and hearing your thoughts on Steemfest and Steemit.

Hey @nanzo-scoop I remember you :) Sadly we did not have the opportunity to talk. Hopefully at the next SteemFest we will :) Following you and your sis @ak2020. Steem-On!

Yes - I'll make an effort to seek you out at the next event!

Glad you liked it . Looks like the camaraderie was Brill

Hey, my man! Super cool, suarve and the perfect gentleman! Was so great to meet you and your fabulous sister at the fest. No doubt we'll catch up again soon. :)

Great freakin' post @nanzo-scoop! This is why Im sooooo pissed I missed it. Glad you had a good time, though... :))

You were so enjoyable to spend time with @nanzo-scoop! I appreciate your company and presence, and look forward to even more conversations at the next Steemfest!

I really wish I could have gone :) Glad you had a good time.

Great meeting you man! Sorry we didn't get to hang more. How about that Woodley-Thompson fight?! That was insane!

Yep, that was a crazy fight! I've no idea how Wonderboy survived that guillotine! I had it a draw. They definitely have to go again.

I know! I couldn't believe it when he stood up and sincerely said, "Good job," to Woodley. Who does that?! Totally a draw, can't wait for the follow up. Woodley is amazing but I have to admit I want Wonderboy to win, much more exciting and interesting style. Hmm, maybe we should do a post-fight google hangout or something next time :)

I think if Wonderboy lets his hands go a bit more; he'll KO Woodley. Woodley always has that knockout power but he played a dangerous game backing up to fence trying to set traps. T-Wood had two spectacular moments (in the first and fourth rounds) but the rest of the fight was all Thompson pressing.

I'm definitely up for a post-fight hangout, it would be fun!

Yeah, I thought something similar. It seems crazy to say, but against Woodley I don't know if it makes sense for him to be trying to use his kicks as much. They're amazing and maybe he can pull them out after he's stunned Woodley and lowered the risk of a take down, but his reaction time + hand speed was beating Woodley's consistently. Let's do it!

@nanzo-scoop, I agree that it is the people that hold this together. The high-quality people this platform attracts is astounding. I'm so grateful to know you and to have shared such great conversations. Powerful stuff!!! Let's do it again!

We should definitely do it again. I've added visiting the Garden of Eden to my bucket-list!!

Yay!!! I love to hear that! Hopefully that will be true for our other Steemian friends. Life is truly great in the GOE vortex. Would be blessed to have you.

It seems that everyone who attended had such a wonderful time! It wasn't in the cards for me to attend, but my goal is to be at the next one and meet all of you.
On platforms such as this, people always must come first. Without us, there would be no reason for it! :)

It was great meeting you too :D
Someone asked me a few days before Steemfest - "What's your game plan? What you hope to achieve at the fest?"

I went like "Hmm no game plans, no expectations.." And really there wasn't any, and to my surprise, everything turned out great lol

Hey @nanzo-scoop, it was great to meet you and @aka2020!!

It was great to meet you too @nanzo-scoop. Let's catch up on rocketchat soon enough. Steemfest was truly a fun event :)

Really enjoyed hearing your ideas and plans for Blockpay. I think there is plenty growth potential, particularly in Africa and South America. I'm currently looking into (with @ak2020) what can be done to spark more crypto adoption in West Africa. I'll certainly be looking to connect with you again once we start fleshing out our ideas.

South Africa is a strong growing economy. Just recently on of our BlockPay Ambassadors visited a conference there to explore future synergies. Here is his article about his trip to Capetown: https://steemit.com/news/@bitshares-munich/why-must-businesses-choose-to-accept-digital-currencies-now-rather-than-wait-for-mass-customer-adoption-of-digital-currencies
