As we move forward with the first, original thriller / horror short film here on Steemit, I'd like to share more artwork for #changelingfilm!
I had an excellent conversation yesterday with Norm Quiros - our concept artist - on the nature of our creature's transformation after receiving a new rendering from him.
He had the excellent idea of making the creature have bones that could grow and shrink rapidly instead of breaking or developing anew. This simplifies things a bit, although it does make it a little like other horror movie monsters to come before it. If you've seen American Werewolf in London, you've seen this effect before.
You can see on his anatomical design notes how he was thinking the creature might function.
That said, the rest of the transformation is still going to be revolting and filled with a delicious suffering. Once our creature's bones begin to make their transformation, it's the skin that has to go to make way for its new exterior.
Due to our budgetary constraints, we probably won't be able to recreate the volume of stunning effects we see in American Werewolf in London, but I'm sure we can pick and choose a couple of shots to exploit to great effect using this idea of stretchable bones and the technique seen in that film.
On a side note, even though I'm paying Norm for his services, it's his attention to detail that remind me what good collaboration looks and feels like. He respects the material and wants to build upon my original ideas in order to make it better. A mindless automaton is not someone I enjoy working with on projects this personal and expensive.
I want to work with people who care about the material they work with and present. It makes me better.
Norm is currently working on finishing up the female model and will be creating the transformation scene this week.
I can't wait!
We can only make this film with your help, so please vote and share.
Thanks,
Phil
WHO DIS IS
If you want to know who I am and what Distant Signal is, check this out. It's sort of a manifesto. The TL;DR is that I've won an award for producing, make a lot of reality TV, live in LA and think that artist and media incentives are ill-aligned and serve large corporations and not independent artists.
