Hello,I made this post by reading my medical book.i will cover about what are varicose veins,its aetilogy,pathogenesis and complications.
VARICOSE VEINS -
dilated,lengthened and tortuos veins are called as varicose veins.
Pathology-
Sites- 1)veins of lower limb.
2)lower end of oesophagus.
3)pampiniform plexus of veins.
4)haemorrhoidal plexus of veins.
Aetiology of Varicose veins-
1)primary-
-inheritence
-diet
-prolonged standing
-degeneration of valve cuspss
-pregnancy causing relaxation of smooth muscle of wall of veins
2)secondary-
Deep vein pathology.
1)obstruction:
(a) extrinsic, example-pelvic masses
(a)intrinsic,example-DVT
2)Incompetence:
Destruction of valves of perforators following recanalisation of DVT.
-arteriovenous fisula
-cavernous haemangioma
Pathogenesis-
Normally,the pressure in superficial foot at level of ankle is 90 to 100 mm Hg at rest and drops to 15 to 20 mm Hg during walking due to sucking of blood into deep veins from superficial veins.
But in incase of deep venoua incompetence valve failure in superficial veins,the pressure in the foot veina during walking is approximately 70 mmg Hg,producing ambulatory venous hypertension in the superficial veina causing varicose veins.
Complications-
Due to venous hypertension :the venous hypertension,which causes varicose veins,cause the following complications:
-venoua dermatitis
-venous ulcers
Due to dilated veins :
-haemorrhage
-thrombophlebitis
-calcification.
