First off, this is for white hats only, black hats need not apply.
A lot of penetration testing is very much unlike the movies, it involves boring terminal sessions or maybe some phone calls and lots of social engineering.
In other words, it's pretty much the opposite of what you may have seen in the movies, especially if what you've seen is some little gizmo that gets plugged in and 'hacks' a computer.
Here's one exception to that. This little USB stick takes advantage of the fact that computers trust plugged in keyboards and allows multiple, rapid payloads to be delivered.
