Hunter's comment

The K-5 is another top of the line DSLR from Pentax replacing the K7. Like its other counterparts, the Pentax K5 challenges perceptions that DSLRS need a full frame sensor to produce quality images at high ISO or low light settings in low light.

The Pentax K5 approaches the performance of Full Frame DSLRs with a significant advantage in cost and size.

The K5 continues with the same body introduced as new for the K7 model. The significant upgrades for the K5 are inside the camera body targeted at the major shortcomings of the K7.

The K5 marks an end to the flirtation with Samsung for the supply of digital sensors. Pentax has probably reverted to Sony sensors, similar to those used by Nikon. This now gives the top of the line Pentax DSLR body the sensor performance, particularly in low light, it needed. The K5 has an 80-12800 ISO range, expandable to 51200 with an increase in resolution to 16.3 megapixels.

Dynamic Range

The measured dynamic range of the K5 is dramatically better than the K7, offering a reduction in blown highlights or murky and noisy shadows. Part of this is in the bit depth that is up from 12 to 14. This means a more numbers, or bits in computer speak, to express a wider range of light levels.

Faster Frame Rate

To help photographers capture fast action shots the Pentax K5 can capture up to 7 Frames Per Second in continuous shooting mode.

Autofocus

Pentax have also improved another major shortcoming of the K7, and earlier Pentax DSLRs, the autofocus system. They are now up to SAFOX IX+ version of their autofocus system. The older systems were generally accurate, but sometimes it seemed to take a while compared to their rivals.

Image Stabilization

Image stabilization is another point of difference, Pentax do it in the body so all lenses, even legacy lenses, benefit from image stabilization.
