If usual artworks are putting things together and coming up with a total or product output, this Empty Words system is different. It is removing something to create a work of art. As I quote from the website:

Empty Words is a system for typesetting and producing text-based posters consisting of only holes.

It is made of standard vinyl cutter that is being ran by custom made software. The combination resulted to a tool for production of textual works.

During an exhibit, the system was ran on a modified Apple TV wherein the visitors are allowed to type their own posters for printing, or rather cutting.

The product may seem so simple but I think it is a good start for typesetting. Different forms of art can be produced using this machine.

Watch how it works on the following videos.

Happy new year! 💥

I think this has great potential and can do a lot more than typesetting.

It reminded me of the dot matrix printer many decades ago and people used it for printing art and photos.

Back a few more decades ago, the computer reads ... punch cards and tapes!

How about brail?

music can be programmed to play with similarly encoded tapes with holes ...

Printed security codes can fade, so, how about security keys with holes that humans can not read and copy or steal?

Now that you mentioned about dot matrix printers, I remember its value to this date. Yes, this is something like the dot matrix printer which is still can not be phased out out because of the quality of its output specially with POS printers.

There has been a legal issue regarding the tape receipts from POSes that were being printed with laser printing. The output is good but it gets erased over time. The receipts are not readable in just few weeks or months thus our government taxing agency can not audit them. The government then mandates businesses to have the dot matrix printer but it is hard to find distributors these days.

If dot matrix printing can not be returned then these can replace the functionality. The wholes will even be clearer and more tamper-proof.

Congratulations!
