The one thing that a lot of new rowers do is swinging with their back before they get their legs down, this can give you back problems. What you should be thinking about is getting your legs down completely as this is where the majority of your power comes from, then swing with you back and finally pull your arms in. Your right about pulling hard, but, when coming back up the slide (recovery) you should be one movement without stopping.

Rowing Machines Concept 2 is amazing machine.
I tried it on 10 for the first time I started using one of these but then I went to 4 it does not make much difference, it depends on the workout your are doing.
