Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer and a standard procedure to detect it is through Biopsy.
But, a team of researchers at the University of British Columbia, have now developed a prototype of a device which intends to detect skin cancer, without need of a biopsy.
This device is an extremely low-cost handheld probe which can help doctors detect skin cancer just by shining a light on the affected area. The device analyses how certain properties of light are changed to determine whether the results are positive or negative.
Still in the development stage, a prototype is being tested and might soon be available commercially for use by dermatologists or even households.

Cancer is a chronic disease which has ma.y kinds and categories. Detection on early stages is difficult as there is not awareness about proper medical checkup in several countries. Skin cancer is also a chronic and common type in which lot of people effected every year. "Cancer Probe" is a great innovation in this field. I dont think any household will have a skin cancer detection device at home and therefore dont agree with the last 2 words. Great innovation though. Painful biopsy replaced by light. While this won't make cure easier, its still may be better for early detection.

Detecting a cancer in early stage is vital to cure it permanently. This is a great low cost device for scanning skin cancer so that people have the chance to overcome from it. Cancer scanning devices are more complex and costly those prototype derive is a low cost, so that it can be obtain by rural hospitals too. I think this has several advantages. First of all, one does not have to go through several biopsies and it can be be done by an ease. Second thing is that people who are living in distant place may not need to travel so long to have a check in the context of skin cancer. So it saves both time as well as lengthy processes. Further, if it can be detected with this tool very efficiently and of course early, then effective treatment can also be started at an early stage to the patient.

Wow! Let's hope this gets released sooner rather than later. To be able to screen for a melanoma just by shining a light on the skin is going to greatly speed up care and ease the worries of patients. After all, not all moles or skin lesions should be a cause for concern, but we can't really be sure until we get them tested. And at the moment, the only way to get them tested is with a biopsy, which is invasive and could take up a few days to weeks--which are a few days or weeks that any person should spend waiting for results. One thing I have a hatred towards is cancer and while this is no cure I see this as a incredibly important device in our fight towards cancer, it will help us detect and take action against skin cancer in a much faster and cheaper way rather then doing a biopsy.

I may be using app or device to check minor illnesses but not something as serious as cancer. For serious illnesses, I am hesitant to rely on something that does not conduct in-depth lab test and examinations like this Cancer Probe.
