SteemIMG will be down for a major server migration... yes again.steemCreated with Sketch.

I pre-apologize for the inconvenience but http://Steemimg.com will be down for atleast 24 Hours if not more to move all 150 GB of image files to yet another server. I decided to get away from google cloud because of cost. Even at this point with only 1500 users and a little over 300k images the cost per day to run upload/download/storage on google cloud services will spiral out of control in a very short time span. Figured Id give it a try but time to move on.

I will be migrating to a new dedicated server for the foreseeable future. I have cut off the Explore capabilities on Steemimg already and will be turning off uploading shortly. I know a lot of you use my service to host you images so again sorry for inconvenience. I do want to remind everyone that if all these uploaded images are simple for viewing within your Steemit posts and not outside the platform I recommend http://dirtyIMG.com (Since Steemit.com caches all of its images, for what seems to be forever, this service may truly be the right on to use in any case) Check it out.

I will keep everyone updated so just look out for updates within this post of additional posts. If you have any questions about DirtyIMG or steemIMG comment below.

Thanks for your great service so far. Looking forward to use it soon again :)

we understand this ! Thank you for keeping us updated. 100% upvote so you don't have to worry about the cost of your servers!

Thanks for the update. I have been using Steemimg for picture hosting since joining, will give dirtyIMG a try.

If I understand this correctly, dirtyIMG is for hosting images that will ONLY be seen on the Steemit.com platform, whereas steemIMG is for hosting images that can appear anywhere on the internet, or in steemit.com posts that will be shared to other social media platforms...is that right?

Correct.

or in steemit.com posts that will be shared to other social media platforms...is that right?

Well shared posts from steemit on other social media would just be a link to steemit and I believe it would target the cached image for a preview but I'm not sure on that. I guess you could share this post on Facebook and see what happens...

EDIT - Steemit.chat does not seem to use the cached images (it should however) Ill make a few calls ;)

Thank-you!

Thank you for hosting my dirty pics ;)

Thanks for your dedication to this, it's been a really good service! Good luck with the migration

DirtyIMG is not an acceptable solution as it is a hack specific to steemit.com. Steem network is supposed to be decentralized — it should not be necessary to use steemit.com to access it. And instead of tying Steem to steemit.com by introducing steemit.com-specific services, we should work to make decentralization effective by introducing and using alternative ways to access the blockchain. Otherwise, why use blockchain in the first place? If decentralization was not important, Steem could have been implemented more easily using a centralized database and a centrally controlled virtual currency.

Well it is an acceptable solution for steemit.com but yes valid point for anything else besides steemit as a way to view the blockchain.

Also you could say the same thing for any image hosting website that the uploader doesn't own personally. Placing images in a server that is not 100% in your control & owned by someone makes that image no longer a decentralized one. DirtyIMG doesn't even hold the image for more then 15 minutes making it more decentralized then any other in reality but also you can't access the image again so... lol. The blockchain isn't a good place to hold the image as well due to block size issues A post of mine about this. Getting truly decentralized images is quite hard to do , there are options including https://ipfs.pics/ but this still relies on it being stored somewhere on someones server at cost in at least one place and although this is shared between many computers it can still go down.

That is why I host my images on my own IPFS node. Unfortunately, I still have to rely on the central public IPFS gateway (ipfs.io) to make them available, as Steem is not integrated with IPFS yet (but it is in the roadmap). Ideally, media content would be linked by its IPFS path and retrieved using a site-specific gateway or a local node, so we would not need to rely on the single gateway server.
