The lonely old lady

I am a Samoan-born and so is my husband and kids. As a young girl back then, there is a saying in the Bible, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you”. There are many stories that came to mind, but I chose the story of an old lady that I met a week ago. I am a Housekeeper at a Retirement Home, and I love what I do. My everyday job is to make sure that residents are happy with their rooms and etc. Last Saturday, I had one last room that needed cleaning before the end of my shift. I knocked on the residents’ door and called out “Housekeeping”, but as i opened the door, there sat a very lonely old lady. I walked up to where the old lady was sitting and asked “how are you today?” the old lady replied, “oh, I’m okay, I have been sitting here waiting for my family, they said that they will be here to visit”. Me, the soft heart person that I am, sat next to her and talked about what the retirement home activities had for that day. Again, the old lady replied, “I feel like my family have left me out, I haven’t seen them in a while”. I then sat there, and talked stories with the old lady, funny stories. After almost an hour of our conversation, the old lady was finally looking happy and excited. Then I offered to take her to the lobby, and so I sat there through an hour with the old lady until it was time for her dinner. By the time I headed back to my cart to clean the old lady’s room, it was already past my time to clock out. So I agreed to stay to clean my last room, that old lady’s room. My parents both passed away in the same year. My Mother passed on Easter 2014, and my Dad passed on Christmas Eve of 2014. The reason why I am steeming about this, is because our parents are not going to be around forever, so love them and cherish every moment that you have with them.
