Dear Philipe/@silkroad40, if you ever wanted to feel like travelling back in time then you should definitely visit Safranbolu on your way through the Black Sea Coast of Turkey. Safranbolu was an important stopping place on the silk road and is situated in the province Karabük, which is located in the north west of Turkey in the Black Sea Region. The city is listed among the 20 best preserverd historical cities of the world as it includes the highest number of protected architectural sites in Turkey.
Safranbolu was placed in the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO in 1994 for its charmingly preserved traditional wooden Ottoman houses and its importance as a caravan station on the main East-West trade road with significant buildings dating back to the 14th century. Safranbolu is like an open air museum with its caravanserais, hamams, mosques and fountains. During the Ottoman era merchants from all across the silk road resided in Safranbolu and worked in its markets. The important geographic location of Safranbolu on the trade route inspired the building of lodges and hostels, for example the historical "Cinci Hani Lodge", which provided accommodation for travellers as well as storage facilites.

Safranbolu is most famous for its authentic historical wooden Ottoman houses, reflecting Turkish urban culture and social life of the 18th and 19th centuries. The unique cultural beauty of the Safranbolu houses together with the old streets pattern stem from their harmony with nature and respect for neighbours. The main architectural rule for the Safranbolu houses was to maximize the benefit from the sun and the view. The houses do not block each others view or neighbours access to summer breezes. In the same way it was undesirable to overlook the privacy of each others garden.
