Japanese marine geologist Masaaki Kimura believes that the large rock structure in the water of the island of Yonaguni Jima is a remnant of an ancient Japanese city that was probably submerged during an earthquake.

Kimura, who has been investigating the structure for years, believes that the underwater city can be up to 5,000 years old.

However, not everyone is convinced that the structure is man-made. Some other opinions, such as geologist Robert Schoch, believe that tectonic activity provides a reasonable explanation for rectangular rock mountains.

Nonetheless, the Japanese government is not interested in declaring the area as a heritage site or investing in further research. But Kimura did not give in to the theory, insisting that faces and animals can be seen carved into stone.

Kimura believes that at least 10 of the underwater structures resemble human buildings, including temples, arches, and even a castle. To support his theory, Kimura pointed out the fact that the history of the world recorded tsunamis occurred in the area in 1771, suggesting that similar events could occur in prehistoric times.

Some even speculate that the Yonaguni Jima might be a fairytale site like the land of Atlantis that disappeared under the waves thousands of years ago.
