Catacombs Capuchins of Palermo

Catacombs Capuchins is a tomb located in Catacombs, Palermo, Sicily, Southern Italy. Although many know that it is a tomb, but Catacombs Capuchins was originally a monastery in the 16th century. Originally was the death of a brother from a monk who came from Silvestro and Gubbio died in 1599.

They then dried up their bodies, placed on ceramic pipes inside the Catacombs and sometimes washed with vinegar. Later, the corpses were embalmed and placed in a closed cabinet and also in a hanging position by still wearing their everyday clothes.

Catacombs Capuchins was initially the only place to lay the corpses of the monks who had been mummified. Then in the years that followed, the place was not only the place used to lay the corpses of the monks, but also the nobles or prominent persons who had previously given the wills containing requests of certain Italians to be preserved by wearing special clothing and requested to replace it at certain times. This funeral ceremony has been going on since the 16th century until the 19th century. In the 1800s, there were already about 8,000 mummies housed within the monastery.
