Helping Students Learn Is Great, Helping Them Earn On Steemit... Even Better

in steemit •  7 years ago

I got home one day to notice a message from one of my students whom I was trying to get on Steemit. I was expecting some issues, possibly related to markdown or some other issue that may occur while posting on Steemit. I was pleased to find out that it was neither of those, in fact, it was some really wonderful news by my students.

What Happened

The text came over whatsapp in the form of a thank you note, thanking me for helping him get on Steemit. More importantly, he managed to get his first payout. Now, if you are a newbie on Steemit, you will probably not understand what the big fuss is all about when it comes to Steem and Steem dollars. It is likely that you were swayed by how Steem or Steem dollars could be converted into your local currency.

To give you a bit of a context, Steem dollars is approximately 8 times my local currency. In other words, 1 Steem Dollar is approximately 8 dollars in my local currency. While that may not be a lot, 8 dollars in my local currency is equivalent to a Mcdonalds meal or an Americano from a hipster cafe, or even a meal at a local road side store. Thus, for a student trying to get by with their limited allowance, it is a big deal.

So aside from getting his first payout, he decided to cash out his first payout to our local currency. What made him so happy was that it worked! I could tell the enthusiasm and happiness in his text.

Lessons Learnt

I was happy for him to have had his first payout. It certainly is a great feeling cashing out your Steem and I'm glad that I have managed to teach an actual skill that is outside of the classroom. While it 'skills outside of the classroom' does not necessarily consist of earning payouts on Steemit, I think the bigger picture here is what Steemit can do.

I think in many ways, Steemit is somewhat like an introduction towards the advancement of cryptocurrency, blockchain and its application. It can be easy to just do the things that we are used to, posting on Facebook and Instagram while not getting rewarded for your creativity. Furthermore, it can be seen as a norm too. Since no one has ever paid anyone for their contributions on social media, that is the norm. That is, until they experience Steemit's possibilities.

Furthermore, I think Steemit opens up the opportunity for talking about money. Most would normally accept money as it is, a mythical item that helps you buy stuff. The fact that you can use Steem in the place of fiat currency opens up a whole lot of learning and teaching opportunities. I believe that through equipping the students, it helps in giving them a bit of an understanding of how the future could be like, instead of just learning what is written in the textbooks.

Conclusion

In the days to come, I hope to have more students share their successes on Steemit, especially the cashing out ones. I suppose it is quite difficult to talk about Steemit without touching on how it can reward you, monetarily. That being said, it is one of the best ways to get others convinced of its potential.

The text that the student gave was posted in the Steemit group that I have on Whatsapp. I hope that this spurs more of them to post more. My hope is for them to build a community among themselves and it starts by, well, getting started. It is the exam season before the holidays and I hope to see more of them posting during their semester break.

Learning experience is really one of the focuses in education to help future generation to cope with future demands. It takes effort to do so!

It does, and much perseverance too

I know exactly what you are talking about here. For our currency too when converted it is a good amount and even more when you are students.

That's right, which country are you from? The exchange is huge for some countries

I am from India.

Steemit is somewhat like an introduction towards the advancement of cryptocurrency

Steem is exactly like that, it allows people to get into the world of crypto by not having to invest money, but just time and effort.

It is great you are promoting Steem to your students! this system can even be leveraged to reward them for their homework :P

Its true, when i get back to college, I would love to do an assignment or project based on using steem as a reward, now that would be cool and awesome

Hi, I loved this publication, first because it helped someone to be in steemit, second because it is their student and third because some people can not imagine what it means to have a vote and also be able to charge and help enormously. In my country, the situation is very sad and people can not have a sustainable life, however, since I met Steemit with a group of friends, we are dedicated to helping other people, making them participate in how wonderful the platform is .
So that they get rewards and change their lives. Today many can buy food, which is important.
We do not do this for our own benefit, but to help other people, just as life gave us this great opportunity, we must give it to others.

That's very true, which country are you from? I do wonder if a country would just switch to cryptocurrency instead of clinging on to their own currency

I agree, Steemit must be spread in every kind of people - even the students.

Such wonderful news @alvinauh. And to see the World around us embracing Steemit and Crytpo in general ( sometimes one person at a time) is very exciting and promising.

Thanks for spreading the good word my man :)

Its my pleasure as well, think its super important to prep the students for what most of us here believe is the future, its sad they havent started talking about it yet in textbooks..

That's great to hear, man. Whenever I introduce the platform to anyone I want to know and make sure that they're at least earning something. To receive a note(text) of thanks from someone you brought in must be a wonderful feeling knowing that you have helped them in some way.

Yeah, steemit was my first step into the world of crypto and it has definitely helped me learn more about cryptocurrency and money.

Definitely, i hear that you are doing this full time at the moment, how has it been so far?

There are so many people that come to steemit and don't know how things work and even more people that need to be guided to this amazing platform. Having the opportunity to be rewarded for your efforts and actually get a payout that you can use can make a big difference in the lives of these people.

We share the same criteria, there is nothing more gratifying to see how we can help others. In my house I help and insensitive to my daughter and my teenage cousin with steemit, they let their imagination fly, they have also created more responsibility.

What you are doing for your students is truly amazing. You are giving them the possibility financial freedom. They are still young and steemit is still growing so who knows where this might take them. I understand when you say steemit is a pathway to cryptocurrency in general and the Blockchain technology that has limitless possibilities, but steemit might surprise us as one of the leaders in that field.
I've been trying to get my family and family on steemit but I suppose not everyone is thrilled at the thought of writing over 1000 words everyday. You're students are very fortunate. Keep grooming them in this amazing platform.

I'm very happy for your student. And I am also happy to know that your activities are paying off in other people and even more so in those people that mean something important to you. God willing, this community continues to grow and change the lives of many. Greetings and thanks for sharing your story.

I really like this publication @alvinahu, I had a similar experience, without doubt gives satisfaction when others succeed on the platform.
