The Features I Think Are Missing From SteemIt

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

I know Steemit is in beta but I have some ideas for features I wanted to put out there to better this new social network.

First and foremost I just spent the last 20-30 minutes clicking through to refollow everyone who follows me. I do this out of respect as I am no better than anyone else. Back when I had my Twitter account with 34K followers it was nearly impossible to do this because I would average 50-100 follows a day. Essentially I became too "popular" but again I am not a celebrity and if I was I would still treat people with respect. Because simply put I am not a dick.

So enough ranting the reason I told this story is as things stand now for someone busy like me it will be near impossible to follow back people who follow me. The reason being that there is a key feature missing which I am unsure how no one has thought to add this yet. That key feature is a tab for "recent follows" as it is now you have to click and go through your individual follows in alphabetical order. (I don't have the time nor the patience to do this.)

There is no way to just see who is new that just followed you. This is problematic and time-consuming if you want to follow a specific user it's easy you use CTRL +F and search for their name then click follow. But if you want to discover who just followed you then you have to scroll through all of your other followers and play seek and find to establish who just followed you.

The next feature I would like to see is private messaging being able to view someone's account and send them a direct message maybe an inbox feature? It's a social network but I feel what is lacking is the ability to connect privately with people and not just on their articles they post. Discord and groups like MSP the (Minnow Support Project) and SteemitBC (Steemit Blogger Central) are making networking easier but it's outside the network using external software not integrated into Steemit itself.

Another feature I think should be added is automatic embeding of gifs or implementing giphy into Steemit for post and comments. Photos and videos embed without a problem while gifs have a problem embedding if not properly formatted this should be addressed so it's easier for new users to post gifs.

Finally, I would like to see the flagging system removed and replaced by downvoting and the introduction of a karma system. Where users who spam and just act like assholes in the comments section get punished by others in the community.

Suggestions for punishment can range from blocking post temporarily to losing SBD/Steem recycled back into the network's economy for repeat offenders. I think this would encourage friendliness and for people to be human rather then jerks if they don't agree with something.

Thanks for reading this short post! What do you think? What features would you like to personally see implemented into Steemit?

Sort Order:

Chat - Steemit chat is an API that has been integrated into the steemit platform (you can access it from the top right menu) but it is not as good as native chat could be as you need to register, keep a separate browser tab open etc. It does inbox you though.

Follow - you can use this 3rd party app to view your recent follows while you wait for a native module to be developed - https://steemdb.com

I hope that these help you and others.

Good post.

This is a easy tool to track your Steem blockchain activities!

Thank you Skytrex I upvoted your comment this is helpful and I wasn't aware of this tool AusBitBank also told me about it earlier today.

Agreed! 100%
I came aboard late last year after LinkedIn was sold to MicroSoft.

It occured to me that as rudimentary as this Network is, it's still VERY capable of catching a large segment of LinkedIn's Market. I want to see more features that catch SteemIt up to LinkedIn or a better front end like Busy.org may make it happen.

Thank you for Steeming and will follow your work.
~Kind regards.

Don't we already know each other on skype? XD

These are some good observations :)

Yeah the flagging is pretty weird, and it does hurt people's potential payouts and/or their Reputation (Little number in parenthesis) which is basically the same thing as the whole Karma thing that reddit has going. It's actually pretty cool to watch your Rep # jump gradually on Steemnow.com ! Overall, you brought up some pretty good points (: I think that if they made the chat feature more like Facebook's, that would be a huge accomplishment. Not that Facebook is revolutionary, but people do tend to like how their messaging system works; It's very easy to use and always accessible. But yeah with the flagging, they should just let you drag the upvote slider in the opposite direction without having to click on the flag. But, then again, people need at least 500 Steem Power before they can even choose what % they want to vote. So I'm not sure if that would work...

nice post, your suggestion has advantage and dis advantage anyway..

yes .. good suggestions.. i agreed i have the issue of re-following my followers.. it is a painful thing .. hope they will rectify these issues soon..

I definitely agree with you about the flagging issue! Something must be done about that...

Good post my man, the points you make are all valid.
The flagging system does need to be addressed and some are offering solutions already such as @freezepeach
Keep up the great work buddy.

thank you and yeah my main issue honestly is the follow issue everything else I can live with.

i like your suggestion and some are similar to mine - i wrote a post like tis recently - you may like my ideas too
