When I visit someone's wallet I see they have been given a 'curation reward'. Could someone explain what this is ? What are we supposed to do apart from mere upvoting to get these rewards ?

Upvoting is curating. As far as I know upvoting is the only way to earn curation rewards.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:
