How payouts are calculated on Steemit?

Is there any kind of likes/comments->Steem function or something?

I just want to figure out how all of this work, it seems like MAGIC :D

          Good question. I have just pop up to the blog post with 30 views and 65 votes which earned $35 when the guy with more than 1000 views, 400 votes earned just $1.08...
          Any clues?

          Do I need to have any Steem to be part of the rewarding program (both ways)?
