IT’S FINALLY HERE – PART III!
The final addition to my Chicagoans guide to doing Vegas Right. I hope everyone has had an opportunity to view my previous two posts ** PART1 AND PART II
Finally, I get to discuss my personal favorite subject: gambling. I want to highlight a few of my favorite places to play with an emphasis on atmosphere, dealer interaction, and timely drink service. All of these have probably been colored by my luck or lack thereof while playing, but as a practitioner of the scientific method I work to stay as objective as possible- boy, that one time playing craps at the Cosmo though…
I’ve already mentioned O’Sheas inside the LINQ, but if you’re in the area later in the evening stroll through the north entrance to the Flamingo all the way to the southwest entrance and you will find the scantily clad and ever entertaining ladies holding court at the blackjack and poker tables. My usual circuit when staying in the area is the LINQ, O’Sheas, and then that section of the flamingo.
If you are a craps player, the Circus Maximus at Caesar’s is my top pick, but the tables at the Cosmo are neatly located near the drink station, and the environment is a striking combination of sex and noir. Caesar’s is also a great place to play 3-card poker. If you like playing the novelty games like War, I recommend either the Luxor or New York New York.
I’m not a huge roulette player, but the strip of tables inside Planet Hollywood ensures you’ll never have to wait for an accommodation, and the servers there are top notch. I also love the space there with the giant ceilings and the not-so-crammed floorplan makes it not seem so claustrophobic. Paris also has a strip of roulette tables that is anchored by a model-ridden catwalk.
I wouldn't be doing this post justice if I didn't mention the 1$ Michelobs at Casino Royale. Quite honestly, it's not that great a deal, but if you're walking north, it's a nice detour.
When it comes to slots I admittedly don’t play them often (unless I can find one of the Jeopardy ones), but the MGM has an enormous selection. I also don’t mind the Mirage for slots.
Finally, I want to mention a boutique hotel & casino that popped up not too long ago: The Cromwell is spectacular. Their casino floor isn’t giant, they don’t have a ton of tables or slots, but it just feels right. It has little bit of old-school Vegas feel combined with some swank highlights. Its minimalism stands out in a city of extravagance. The crapes and blackjack tables have reasonable limits, the drink service is good, and the layout lends itself well to stopping in for a game or two as you’re walking the east side of the strip. The reason I note it is because it has the best cocktail bar on the strip, Bound Bar. I enjoyed a glass of high-end scotch, the selection of which is deep and robust, but I also had an espresso Manhattan that literally made me rethink what a good cocktail looks and tastes like; it was a holy experience.
Some odds & ends
Bring a suit. Or at the very least a jacket or sport coat. For me, I like enjoying Vegas for all that its worth, and that means harkening back to the rat Pack days, wearing a suit, and enjoying an old fashioned with a steak. I feel like a million bucks prowling the strip in a nice outfit but hey that just might be the old soul in me.
Keep a Gatorade or a water bottle on ice right next to your bedstead before you head out. Preparation ensures success, and when all you can think about is how lit you’re getting that night, you’ll thank me.
Leave decent tips. A well-timed tip has served me well on several occasions. Don’t be leaving a trail of twenty’s, but whenever I speak with someone who can make my stay a little nicer, I take the opportunity.
As always appreciate you guys for reading, and would love to know what I missed, since I'll be there in a week (hopefully doing a few DTube vlogs?!? I'm sure I missed a ton of little spots, there's just so much to do while in Paradise.
