Bots - other platforms killing them like cockroaches

in steemit •  7 years ago

Only here at Steemit do we openly let them flourish. I suspect they already control a huge percentage of the daily reward pool thanks to our support (are we catching up with Reddit?), so maybe one day they can reward each other, while we human beings withdraw.

If anyone knows what he is talking about, it is him.
It must become public knowledge, the attacks like the last one on Laura Ingraham were NOT real people. It was bots, programming, that hit her sponsor sites.
NOT Russian bots either.

Malicious bots on steemit does not really exist. I mean that with the traditional meaning of it. Phishing bots and stuff of the likes.

There is still a plythora of bots though used to stress test the blockchain at early life of steemit. And to explot the reward pool distribution.

Never the less there are mallicious bot owners that used that technique to enrich themselves through self voting. But that mostly happens from people that where used to game things to get more wealth that they would other wise would. That become a problem but it is not at the level it used to be.

Reddit bots are used to give more exposure to your account think of it as an advertising technique. In steemit is both that and the monetary rewards. So there is double the reasons why people try to game with it since they can make an extra income in some cases that it wouldn't be possible in other platforms.

Even so, the big investors at steemit the so called whales that are have way more skin in the game tend to be after the well being of the platform so they know what is bad for their investment and they try to actively not support it as much.

I could go for ever and brake it down at every aspect of it and explain how this is not going to be a big issue for steemit's future I won't because it will take to much time and effort. But I have tried this kind of technique my self to see how far you can go exploiting it and get rewards back, it was way more time consuming and less profitable than being honest and work for the best of the community.

In my defense when I was experimenting with the bots I used to give back the most of the rewards I got to the community with giveaways and stuff.
I think I quit bothering experimenting with them after 3 months top.

For the last year now we have this trend of buying votes from Bid Bot Services, I am experimenting with that but I can assure you that it becomes a gamble at some point. You lack 2 parameters to make sure that your exploit is going to be profitable and at mass usage it tends to become less and less profitable for those involved to a point that it will cause negative outcome with you ending up paying more than you got.
I know it looks bad. but before steemit gets out of beta all of those scenarios has to be excessive tested understand and then corrected in some ways. Reddit and more centralized organizations have focused teams that are working excusively for that while on steemit that happens in a more decentralized way. @ned has a team that is suppose to give solutions to those issues with updates/hard forks if you wish. Till now every hard fork was better than the previous. I am sure even everything is fine tuned and we got an official lunch there will still be issues and exploits. It can take another year, or it might be announced along with the smart tokens.

Thank you for a very comprehensive reply.
I also posted the above for those who think it is only a steemit problem. But it is good that each platform experiment and devise their own solutions.
I admit there are times I feel tempted to using a bot to get votes - not because it gives money, but because it may help bring people to read my posts if they see many are voting me. Unfortunately, present bots are of no use to me, since they do not affect the data on how many viewers I have had. That is the part of steemit I care about. I am doing very well in that regard :) I joined in Sptember last year and still have an average of 1 or two viewers of my post. A pity I cannot say, 'it can only get better' as it can also get worse.

If anyone creates a bot that allows me to create a list of people I really want to follow (I should be able to delete also) and it informs me of each new post of theirs, that bot I would gladly use. The "feed" system does not work, I find the list it presents is of so many posters that I never get to see those I really want to follow.

I would suggest you to give the bid bot services a chance there are not only high bid bots( I think 3-5$ to be for higher wallets. dolphins and upward) you can find bots for any wallet. It is working if your sole purpose is more exposure as a reward multiplier though that is a gamble and depends on 2 important unknown factors future price of steem and sbd.
I am with your about the feed being broken. main reason we have so many external websites to rely on like steemit.chat facebook groups and discord to name a few. It is a pity that you get only that few views I know steemit in general does give the early bird a big of an advantage. I am one of them but I guess you could tell that already. In my eyes everything would be better if whales just decided that they are not going to give a single vote for a week as a test. That would be enough to get some data about if it would be better or not, I think that alone would make the trending page a either a great advertisement for steemit in quality or the next best meme frontpage after 9gag. The tresshold is still thin. It would get 10x more people for steemit to work as it is designed to. With 10x whales dolphins etc. That would help for the reward pool to be distributed more equal.
Keep an eye open for the EOS steem like apps that larimer may come up with in the future. He might address all that on his next projects.

Thank you, I'll try to keep an eye on @larimer....oops, I just checked his blog pages and saw zero posts, comments. How do I can an eye on his developments?

not an investment advice. just give it a try when and if he announce a working social blog on Eos
if he will then it will be something to try out at least experiment with it.
